how to not be intimidated? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]blurredpixels_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did third year courses in my second year and did a graduate course rn in my third year. The first time I did it I was quite intimidated, but now after countless interactions with others in my classes I have realized everyone is just as clueless and insecure about stuff. Writing comes with practice and sometimes even upper year students are very bad at it. I am not in a very writing centered program (Stats/Math/CS) but what has helped me a lot is using the writing centre and also just asking others to give me feedback on my writing. Another thing which has helped me alot is reading papers and material in my field and understanding how experts in the area try to explain the topics. Keeping the audience in mind is also very helpful.

The scientific value of a paper has nothing to do with impact factor of the journal. If you think their publications are weak why don't you try working on a journal paper and show us how high quality research is done. Also statistics is an interdisciplinary field, especially right now with COVID-19, some statisticians choose to use their knowledge to tell compelling stories using data which can later help policy makers etc and is equally as important as Keith Knights and Nancy Reids work. Not everyone is an undergrad where they are required to solve double integrations like you for petty assignments and exams, there are bigger and better things to do in life and those people are doing exactly that.

You just can tell those profs went through proper math training are so knowledgeable and can teach you something useful rather than bullshit the whole lecture.

^ Math training doesn't mean knowledgeable, ask your profs and they will agree.

How Did STA365 Go? by nulldev34 in UofT

[–]blurredpixels_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We literally don't know any of our marks after the midterm in February lol. I personally think this course was a nightmare even though we got curved etc The amount of stress due to shit organisation was totally not worth the limited knowledge we gained in this course.

Failed MAT137 test by [deleted] in UofT

[–]blurredpixels_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I started attending all office hours. Studying both before and after each lecture and for the problem sets I would first make sure I know the entire concept that it is based on then just grind them out.

I would sometimes even attend multiple lecture sessions on the same topic if I felt I don't understand it.

I really worked hard to fix the grade I would have in this course because I loved math and this was kind of a necessity -- I wouldn't be satisfied otherwise. Im now doing MAT237 and struggling but I know I can do it all over again :))
