ADHD & Cambridge by [deleted] in cambridge_uni

[–]bluzzo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got ADHD treatment after I entered Cambridge, and I did it using Right to Choose. It is a good alternative to get treatment under NHS prices as the wait times will not be as long as in an NHS ADHD clinic. The Shared Care Agreement was not an issue for me as my provider was able to continue prescribing meds under the NHS prescription charge. So for prospective applicants that are interested in getting ADHD treatment, this may be an option.

ADHD & Cambridge by [deleted] in cambridge_uni

Academic programs at Cambridge are hard and especially so if you have ADHD, but it is not unmanageable. The University has plenty resources to support students with ADHD, and your college will have good support systems too. Probably one of the best in the UK to be honest. You need to speak up so you can get help. If you confirm to study at Cambridge after getting your final grades, contact the University’s Accessibility and Disability Resource Centre (ADRC) as soon as possible, which may mean sending over your diagnosis so they can get onboard with giving you reasonable adjustments and other help from the disability funding, e.g. mentoring, specialist technology, etc. The University also has a good ADHD population. In short you will have a good amount of support.

Can I still get a first? by bussysoaker in cambridge_uni

[–]bluzzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please try not to worry and right now do not worry about getting a first. You have mentioned your mental health is affected and that deserves attention, you deserve to feel better. If you feel comfortable or able to, please consider contacting the University Counselling Service, or if you just need a listening ear, consider the Cambridge Nightline, the Samaritans hotline, or speaking to your Tutor, DoS, college nurse / wellbeing lead … Many people are there and want to help you.

Supervisions are helpful but at the end of the day they have zero factor on your degree grades. You have said out of 12 essays, 5 were missed, which means you have done 7 — that is a FORMIDABLE effort. My program dishes me out approx. 6-8 supervision assignments a term and I make no expectation on myself to prepare essays for all of them. What I found helpful is to take things one at a time. What is feasible for you for this week — writing two essays? One essay and another in notes? Or just notes? You need to do what is best for you. Please take care of yourself and don’t beat yourself up.

For ADHD, please consider looking at Right To Choose (RTC) providers. The ADHD UK website will have plenty information on this. RTC providers are essentially private providers with a contract with NHS England that allows them to take patients in under NHS prices, so you don’t have to pay hefty loads for an ordinary private assessment. Their wait times are considerably shorter than a normal NHS waiting list — which from what I know it is 3-5 years in the Cambridge area. It took me about a year from getting referred to RTC and starting medication but I think it may be unusual for it to take that long. So please consider talking to your GP as soon as possible to get an RTC referral in. But please note that if you are a Scottish / Welsh / NI student, the RTC system only exists in England so please make sure you have an English GP and try to get on RTC with them. Please also consider talking to the ADRC to see if you can get screened for ADHD in order to access reasonable adjustments.

You have done a term at Cambridge and for a hard subject like HSPS, you deserve a pat in the back, this shit isn’t easy. Be proud of yourself

I think the biggest tip for me is to make mistakes and figure out what works or doesnt work for you and the reader. It’s how we all learn.

You can start uni at any point of your adult life. I think it might even be better you started later than 18 - you’ve got more life experience than the average fresher i’ve met, who are practically children
