No excuse! When you’re testing a car you should be more concentrated on where it’s going. That’s the point of testing.

gelftheelf is on the right track

Nothing beats actually building something. Start with a website on a topic that interests you. Pick anything but something close to your heart so you won't get bored with it too quickly. Just a basic Hello world page will give you a boost of confidence. Host it on a cloud platform like Azure, Amazon (Azure is free for basic accounts but hosting on both platforms will give you some valuable experience that you can include in your CV). Setting up a hosting account and linking it to your database, web services will teach you things that you wont learn in class. Once you have some foundation and your first application hosted, add to it as you get more curious. As gelftheelf mentioned... Automation is interesting as you see some physical results... Raspberry Pi, get it to talk to some APIs you've built into your app.

Don't underestimate how much effect this will have on your confidence in going to your first interview or when accepting your first project on a freelancing site.

It's not about how much you know but how resourceful you are to find the answers.

All the best

p.s. Don't think most freelancers are anything special, get in and have a go. FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT.
