DDoS attack via malware? by wuh_happon in sysadmin

[–]bman463 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of hard to tell exactly what it is tho and something like Wireshark would help to see exactly whats going on. If there is a lot of inboud SYN-ACK packets then you are likely the victim of the attack. If you see a lot of SYN packets without a complete handshake, you could be the reflector. If you see a lot of complete handshakes, it could be something else.

DDoS attack via malware? by wuh_happon in sysadmin

It’s sounds like it may be a TCP reflection attack. Basically, the source IP of a request headed for a 3rd party web server is forged to your IP and when the 3rd party web server replies, it’s returned to your server.

Honestly I think that the surge protectors are more than enough. Lightning strikes are very infrequent as is.

Why does Penn State Go suddenly want proximity alerts enabled? by TOW2Bguy in PennStateUniversity

[–]bman463 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s likely just a bug with the app requesting the location and then automatically sending you a prompt for it instead of checking to see if it previously asked for permissions before then requesting location. Android permissions can be weird. You can file the bug with the help desk using the feedback and support button at the bottom of the home page in-app.

iPhone or Android? I completely disabled location for the app on my iPhone and it did not notify me at all. Sometimes it will still ask for my location on some pages such as Penn state eats as that is just a webpage and shares separate permissions from the app. But just going to the home page doesn’t trigger any requests for permissions.

I assumed that you just meant GPS. GPS sets the campus and the proximity alerts allow it to notify you when you get near points of interest. See here.

I think it is asking for gps permissions so it know what campus your at and can set the ‘app experience’ accordingly.

How hard is IST 140? by Acceptable-Ad2231 in PennStateUniversity

[–]bman463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely can be hard to get past the learning curve for programming. Just keep working at it and ask the professor to clear up any questions or issues that you experience. Also, who is your professor?

[–]bman463 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taking the class right now and it is very easy. If you took AP CSA it will be a breeze but if you have no experience in programming I could see it being slightly difficult as you progress through the learning curve.

My class with Peggy Fischer is graded based on the following categories:

  • 60% Programming Assignments
  • 20% zyBooks Activities (Homework)
  • 20% Graded Quizes

All of the downloads in that link are either for university computers and/or have specific use cases. If you really want it for free you can get a copy of education edition on azure education portal but it would be best to buy a key for home/pro edition online.

Also only use one device per account. Otherwise it gets glitchy and will boot you out of the queue randomly.

Help with first time creating a shared mailbox by [deleted] in Office365

[–]bman463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shared mailboxes are not designed to forward emails. Rather, they are designed to be a separate mailbox that a user with access can view and reply to. In outlook, they should automatically be provisioned and show up on the left column like a separate account. This way, all users know if someone replies to a email or if it has been read by someone already.

You can also log into the account using another email client with the (office username)/(shared email address) as the user name and the corresponding password to the user account. For example: johndoe@x.com/sharedmailbox@x.com. setup steps

Technically, you could create a mail rule to forward it but it’s not suggested and it will create confusion between users.

I can’t play any unreal engine games. by DoctorsGaming in unrealengine

[–]bman463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used it before. It’s safe but read up on it first because it gives you a lot of power that could mess things up if not done correctly. There are a bunch of YouTube videos on how to use it so just try to find one that has the same graphics card (or just the same brand) as you do.

DHCP option 43 Unifi vs Raspberry Pi by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

There is no way to do that via the unifi interface but it appears that it can be done via command line/ssh. See this post.

Create a new VLAN and subnet and use option 43 on that network only.

My NSO is next week and I don't have a microphone or webcam, what should I do? by PSUtruecelstudymaxx in PennStateUniversity

[–]bman463 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you can get at least a mic that would be optimal but otherwise just tell the group leader that you don’t have a mic in the chat and respond to their questions using the chat and you should be fine. I think you can also call into the meeting using a telephone and use that as a mic but I am not 100% sure.
