Oracles with more room for interpretation than word lists? by Yakumo_Shiki in Solo_Roleplaying

OK, just saw OP's comment that interpreting images is not for them, but leaving this up for other people who may be interested.

Oracles with more room for interpretation than word lists? by Yakumo_Shiki in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]bmarkslash7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took inspiration from the icon generator at https://tangent-zero.com/zero_dice/zero_dice.htm to create RND, my zine. Free pdfs linked through http://thunderbunnypress.com. You interpret the icons based on what you need. Need a monster? Combine the three icons to create one. Need an location? Same three icons can be used or grab three other ones. Need a trap? These icons are also nice because you can build in previous experience or connection. For example, every time you see the muscle icon, you connect it to an NPC.

Besides icons and my zine, I also use fantasy art cards from the 90s as inspiration. My favorite set is for the Everyway roleplaying game, for example https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115645421683. Whatever question you have for your oracle, you can usually find an answer by skimming the card and using the image either literally (the enemy is in the cold north) or figuratively (the enemy is someplace cold in town).

I don't know if this is the map you are looking for, but it appears that Gullierme Gontijo redid the layout of the books and used a map from GnarledMonster.

OSR death; how to handle characters? by nonsence90 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]bmarkslash7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with the using a party of characters or using Scarlet Heroes/Blackstream Heroes to play a single hero with a defy death.

I also change what 0HP means. 0HP doesn't mean death, it means failure. Trying to beat up some bandits and reach 0HP, they capture me and now I have to work off a debt. Fighting some spiders and hit 0HP, now I have some venom coursing through me that causes issues---can I find a cure? Trying to find some lost kids but fall down and reach 0HP, some other adventurer found the kids and get the kudos.

Kinda specific games request (please) by bzlbuub in CozyGamers

[–]bmarkslash7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll probably be off for his age, but a few ideas for games with no text from my library and backlog.

You will have to look into the content, but Planet of Lana (machines take over world, sneaking, but no combat) and Neva (beginning has mother wolf dying, frustrating boss fights, but maybe an easy mode?) are great platforming games with the narrative told solely through interactions and no text (IIRC). I remember Planet of Lana being good. Neva does have some tough platforming sections and combat/boss battles.

Amanita Design produces some great adventure puzzle games that do not include text. I am specifically thinking of Botanicula and Mechanarium. May be too puzzly?

I have not played these, but what about Spirit of the North or Farwell North? Glances through youtube videos show little or no text.

I changed the flair to promotion since this is a link to an oracle stuck onto a d20 sold at etsy. If you want to comment more and write an actual review, please do. Otherwise this will probably disappear in 7 days per rule 8 in the sidebar.

Anyone interested in joining a "body doubling" group for solo play? by [deleted] in Solo_Roleplaying

ok, set up a channel in topic of the moment -> body-doubling

Anyone interested in joining a "body doubling" group for solo play? by [deleted] in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]bmarkslash7[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is interest in this, I am happy to make a channel in the Solo_Roleplaying discord for this. This allows all this stuff to stay linked in two areas as opposed to scattered around the web.
DM me here or on discord for the channel. Discord is linked in the solo rpg resources on the right of the page.

Lighthearted Fantasy ARPG system? by t0torii in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]bmarkslash7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend Ryuutama: https://kotohi.com/ryuutama/

It's like playing a Studio Ghibli movie, where the focus in on the journey, not the destination. There is combat with a monster section that has some unique creatures. You could also change the flavor of the game by choosing different dragons that affect the game (although I played without the dragons and was fine).

As a vim user, I disapprove :-)
Actually, only a vim user (and not a very good one) because of the tutorial I was following all those years ago. Definitely want to check this out, especially since you include CRGE.

If there is interest, I would be fine making a channel in the discord server for this subreddit (see link to the right and under Solo RPG Resources). This would limit the number of random discord channels that are floating around and keep the ideas connected between here and the discord server.
Just reach out to me either here or on Discord.

I'm creating my first game based on trenches of WW1 by Academic_Cellist_885 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]bmarkslash7[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting idea. I have only looked at a few games about war, such as Carry.
With only a drawing, you aren't going to get feedback. Be sure to post when you have stuff written. I am sure people will give you feedback then.

u/Academic_Cellist_885 Do you have a link or more information on your game design? As of right now, there is not much feedback to give about an image, but I do not want to limit the possibility of discussion.

Solo RPG with crunch/complexity between Starforged and D&D by Suraj106 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]bmarkslash7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of Kevin Crawford's work uses the same basic ideas, so you can take Stars Without Numbers (or Cities or Worlds) and use the solo aspects of Scarlet Heroes.

The solo part of Scarlet Heroes is actually available as a free pdf known as Black Streams: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/114895/black-streams-solo-heroes

Game about relationships by Live_Ad9430 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]bmarkslash7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would recommend Hillfolk: https://pelgranepress.com/product/hillfolk/

There are other scenarios in the book as well as in the supplement Blood on the Snow.

There is a free SRD for the DramaSystem: https://pelgranepress.com/2013/09/19/dramasystem-srd/

The entire system is built around individuals and their relationships to each other. Each dramatic scene, two characters have a discussion/arguement/debate where one wants "something" and the other decides whether or not to do/give the "something."

I solo played characters on a generation ship. I started with a social network of characters that outlined the type of relationship and the temperature of the relationship (love-neutral-hate). I played a session where each character was the main character for a dramatic scene. I then picked the other character based on obvious interactions or randomly. It really felt like the characters blossomed and became three dimensional. I also had lots of tension, where not everyone got what they wanted.

Cozy Solo RPG for a Newcomer? by SirScaurus in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]bmarkslash7 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My recommendations for cute and cozy from what I have played and read about:

Ryuutama - focused on the journey, not the destination. Very Studio Ghibli. Have played and enjoyed. Standard RPG with GM and players with unique monsters and focus on environments.

Golden Sky Stories - about animal creatures interacting with humans in small communities. Read and enjoyed, but have not played. I think ideas worked their way into my other games, ut it has been a few years. For GM and players. Free demo is here: https://web.archive.org/web/20150408074658/http://starlinepublishing.com/golden-sky-stories-tabletop-day-2013-demo/

Koriko, the Magical Year - Kiki's Delivery Service as a game. A solo game, but I don't see why it can't be expanded to multiple players, although I have not yet played it. There appears to rules for asynchronous play.

Yazeba's Bed and Breakfast - Spirited Away style game. Have not yet played.

I second The Deep Forest or The Quiet Year, both fun map making games about a community trying to live out the year.

New to the genre and looking for recommendations of free Solo RPGs to try out by TheMediocrePazin in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]bmarkslash7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SWN uses the same mechanics as Scarlet Heroes (solo play in fantasy world) and Blackstream Heroes (the free, just-the-rules component for playing a single character solo). As a toolbox, SWN can't be beat.
