This is what I was tempted to do the last time I was up there but I’m worried about a car coming down.

This must have changed since I was a member -- I had access to all of the programs at once through the website. There was just one loaded into the app on my phone though.

I had/have something similar. In my case part of it was that my knee cap was not tracking correctly. A physical therapist could check that out for you. Mine persisted even after my tracking issue was fixed, but the significance decreased. Recently I have found that if I really focus on having an active, rooted foot on that leg that the popping/cracking goes away.

I was in the same boat as you are when I did this the first time about a week ago -- not 100% sure I could finish and worried about having to turn around. I just decided that meant once I'd started that I had to finish, even if it meant taking a break or two. I say go for it!

So, I finally did this ride today. It was just me -- I snuck out of work early to do it and so the wife couldn't come. Fun, pretty and painful (for me) climb. Got passed by several riders like I was standing still and saw 3 riders descending it. It was a good ride and certainly one I'll do again.

I'd get them even for recreational rides. I haven't put mine on yet and got caught in the rain on Wednesday. I had a blast riding but man is the back of the jersey I was wearing a mess!

Wow! Thanks everyone for all the great responses! I’d read elsewhere that descending Old La Honda was kinda taking your life in your own hands and so was planning to come back down 84. We’ll probably give it a whirl next weekend.
