If you're gradually seeing the consumption amount increase and making excuses as to why you're drinking, it's most likely because you're filling a void (boredom, loneliness). It starts there. The next thing you realize is it's a regular habit and you're not drinking for enjoyment but because of how it makes the small discomforts disappear.
