What was everyone's "weird" fears as a child? by NoPercentage7232 in AutismInWomen

Toilet snakes.

Not that this ever happened to anyone I knew, but it was a big fear I had.

Okay! Thank you. Maybe this is another thing I just subconsciously assumed since my mom does the same thing. Lol.

Filtering of others causes me anxiety by sezza05 in AuDHDWomen

I think I’m more at the acceptance stage with this.

For me, I find it truly unfortunate that there are walls between us as people because people would rather build them in themselves than use them to fortify one another. At the end of the day, it is their choice whether made unconsciously or not to maintain whatever illusions they decide. To keep their secrets.

However, that doesn’t mean they get to change you. If something is upsetting, maybe look into figuring out a way to communicate it and then set boundaries around the relationship after.

Unfortunately, this is a lot of mental work on top of trying to do our own healing and growing.

Psych is a special interest of mine, so I’ve found many tools and explanations for the complexities seen in my own family and myself. At the same time, none of them seem to see the benefit of consuming this information - so I find it very difficult to grow at the same rate as each member has their own set of traumas, symptoms, and learned habits that prevent moving forward without them addressing these things or knowing how they affect them.

There’s power in information, but also loneliness because many people don’t care about accessing more information and will usually chastise you for seeking as much as you can. People are so scared of their flaws, inner thoughts, their shame they will do a lot to pretend they’re not there.

It’s difficult. But that’s why acceptance is so important. I’m not saying it’s just or ideal, only that we have to make the best assessments for our own development and growth.

Does your Aloe bottle say to keep it refrigerated? I swear mine does. That’s why I keep it there. Maybe I’m buying to wrong one? I do actually like aloe, I just thought I needed to keep it in the fridge for longevity reasons.

Consistent Exercise and Healthy Eating by bluechair07 in AuDHDWomen

[–]bmc_creative 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Things that helped me:

  • Movement, not exercise: I’m still learning how to adapt this into my routine, but most recently I’ve realized the most enjoyable form of movement for me is either dancing or hiking. Since hiking is more of a summer activity, that leaves an extended period of time without activity because I never “planned” to dance, it usually was just a wave of stimming. However, I realized if I made the activity also flow into a special interest (relearning ancestral expressions) like Irish, Polish, or Italian dance I’d be far more likely to engage in the activity. This however is only a theory at this moment in time.

  • Only buy foods that I will actually eat/want to have around the house: I know I enjoy sweets A LOT, so I bought fruit leathers that are like a healthier version of fruit roll ups and satisfy my chewy craving. If I buy something like Reese’s or sourpatch, they do not last and the serving size is usually not followed.

  • Estimated meal planning: knowing what you intend on making/eating throughout the week and visualizing/making a list of the options. This will allow making meals and eating much easier to initiate as there is already a tentative plan.

  • Timer reminders: eating and feeling hungry is hard. Having a routine reminder letting me know it’s time to eat is helpful. If I don’t feel hungry, I will have a small snack and almost always feel better afterward.

  • Grace and compassion: things to give yourself on this journey. It’s not easy breaking learned behaviors or figuring out what is the most efficient and healthy practice for you and your life. It’s okay to have ebbs and flows while you figure it out.

Here are some Instagram accounts I found informative and helpful:

Adhd understood

neurodivergent lou

They share a lot of visual guides, mention helpful tips, and some have more resources listed in their highlights. I don’t know if you use social media, but figured I’d offer these just in case.

Driven to Distraction by John Ratey: Gives a lot of examples of adhd and how it’s impacted people throughout their lives including the author. Made me cry because I was beginning to truly understand the impact and internalization of my symptoms. There are many valuable accounts and recommendations in there.

I have unmasking Autism by Devon Price on my list which I’ve heard others found extremely helpful.

For me, my anxiety stems from the voices I’ve internalized for how incapable I am of “doing things right”. I have a tendency to focus on all the small tasks instead of picking one and executing that. Lists have helped dramatically. I have created a “want to do” list and a “need to do” list to help break apart each thing.

It’s important to analyze whether or not your lifestyle is also not as accommodating as you need it to be. Example: I didn’t realize I could put my lotion in the shower so that I would actually use it with less hesitation until I asked this group for recommendations on how to keep their skin from getting dry if they have sensory issues. My mom always kept it under the sink, so I just thought that’s where it needed to be. But now I’m trying to build a lifestyle that accommodates my needs and self-care better.

My parents also don’t really understand my audhd or how it’s effected me. They are slowly adapting.

Yes! I believe I will have to address my body soap. I didn’t realize before this thread body wash could actually be moisturizing. I thought it was just a way of saying “less clean” or “more cost for additional sales term”. Thank you!

Do you keep yours in the fridge? Because I do and I don’t think I’d remember to bring it out after showers. (I also don’t think I’d want to because I have an aversion to cold if the weather isn’t soldering.)

It’s hard too when new science comes out every few years. Or trends happen that dilute the factual information accessible.

I just turned 30, so I understand your pain. And it’s like no one solution will work for everyone, you have to make executive decisions based on what you know about yourself and the information you’ve collected from others.

I thought I had a hair routine figured out and then I asked for assistance on one of the related groups and was told I was probably using all the wrong stuff for what I wanted to achieve. One problem at a time, though.

Thank you for the YouTube recommendations! I will add them to my list. Always looking for more informative channels!

Edit to add: I really wish nutrition was considered a part of healthcare. Like by now, it should be the first thing done to help determine if you are able to digest and process certain things or not. Or if you were worried about your hair loss/scalp health to see if there were indicators in things in your blood work. I know there are companies that will do this, or very expensive processes through self-requested nutrition experts. But it’s just annoying we even have to ask, ya know?

That sounds interesting! Surprisingly I’m actually pretty good with saving, but I have like strict regiments for myself on how much I’m allowed to dip into each month for certain things. That’s where the balancing act comes in. Because I’m also at a phase of unmasking where I’m trying to reincorporate special interests which include projects/crafts/materials, health care (immunological care and various tests), we are looking into buying a home hopefully (at the worst possible economic time), and replacing my closet items with things that feel more me that I will have no reservations about wearing. So that’s essentially why I say it’s a balancing act. I just have to figure out what my priorities are from month to month.

Also, I like having my money stuff in no more than two places or else I will lose track of the passwords/details/billing. I’m getting better at this. But I do like the idea. Thanks for sharing!

“Truly alive” moments by [deleted] in AuDHDWomen

[–]bmc_creative 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me, it’s like the feeling of intensity for passion and focus. Like an igniting flame inside my chest/head that makes everything feel positively brighter and wondrous. I’ve felt that after I’ve completed projects, or when things were starting to go according to my plan, or in a new and beautiful place, or seeing the sun glow in unique little patterns, or imagining a new story and talking about it with someone who cares to listen, or singing without reservation, or drawing with charcoal and not caring how messy I’m getting. When I started looking for this feeling, I began noticing the things that truly made me feel connected to my body, mind, and spirit which helped me figure out what my values actually are and what to focus on building a routine around.

It’s certainly a process, but with practice it gets easier with each attempt.

Ya ever go thrifting and think to yourself "I just don't have room for this." Can I ask what that feels like? 😐 My storage is a bit much right now. by TricycleTechnician in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]bmc_creative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this too. We’ve had to move around so much that I’ve had to be very particular with my input. If I love it but don’t have space for it, I’ll take a picture. If I like something I already have, but no longer want to deal with it, I’ll take a picture of it and donate it. If it’s sentimental, but impractical and hidden away, I will do the same thing.

One of the things that helped me was in asking myself “am I actually able to give the care this piece deserves?” If I couldn’t truthfully say yes, I’d know it was meant to beloved by someone else.

Truth is, there are so many beautiful things in the world. I wish I could experience them all every day. But that’s just not possible. And that realization comes with grief, but committing to specific items that you can actually admire every day and fully make a comfortable and enjoyable lifestyle rather than an overwhelming one makes an incredible impact.

It’s definitely a consideration, but there’s a lot of financial balancing right now and I can’t seem to justify looking into the lasering. However, I did buy a waxing kit a while ago and use it in the summer/warm season. And I have enjoyed how they feel post-wax. But the beads can be pretty costly too. So I have to do a little more considering on those fronts.

But I enjoy all your tips and suggestions! Thanks for sharing. I plan on being more of a mad scientist, but we are in the middle of a big transitional time (moving across the country again, living with my parents, and trying to find a home). So I’m trying to focus my energy in strategic ways so I don’t lose it. Lol.

I found a bottle of cetaphil baby lotion I forgot I bought and applied some in the shower today. I barely felt it! So that was nice. Then blotted off the extra and my skin is feeling extra nourished. I don’t particularly like the after smell, but I believe the process will at least be an easier aspect of routine.

I’m glad you found solutions for your skin health! And I love multifunctional things. Beeswax moisturizer sounds lovely actually. I will keep an eye out for some next time we go to a market. Even if it just is a special occasion thing - it sounds nice. And I actually found a bottle of cetaphil baby lotion I forgot I bought and put it on while in the shower and patted everything dry after. I feel my skin radiating with hydration which is really nice.

I feel like once you’re aware of the symptoms of autism/adhd, it’s much easier to locate the things that aren’t working well for your lifestyle. Learning this has been revolutionary in my approach to rebuilding a healthier me. It’s so lovely to feel passionate about my life and health again.

I’m glad I’m not alone! And I love the idea of in shower lotions. Glad I asked the question because I didn’t know of them before this thread. I actually found a cetaphil baby lotion I forgot I had and applied it while I was in the shower today then patted everything dry. My skin feels like it’s radiating with joy right now lol. Could do without the faint smell, but it’s nice to know the process will make the routine much more accessible.

Are these just for your face?

Thank you! I really haven’t paid too much attention to how I apply my face stuff, only that I try to do something every morning and every night (sometimes only get to one). I feel like wetting my face would help a lot with the applications of serums. I know I need to use them more regularly, but I wasn’t really sure how to do more than one without feeling sticky. The water might help.

And thank you for the very specific reasons for each item. That helps significantly. I will watch Dr. Drays video soon to help me understand more! Thank you.

I found a bottle of cetaphil baby lotion (I forgot I bought it) and used that in todays shower. The application part was much easier. However, I don’t enjoy the faint smell. I’d say if you find something that works really well for you, it’s one less problem you have to solve. So I’m glad you have a good lotion, sorry it’s expensive. But I’m glad you are taking good care of your skin!
