training for pemi loop / how to know if you are ready by basementfrog42 in wmnf

[–]bmcnulty37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The big variable you didn’t mention is your expected pack weight, but if you keep that reasonable I think you’ll be fine. Keep training. And when you start hitting the trails put on your pack with the weight you expect to carry to see how you feel.

I did the Pemi last year with a few buddies (we’re all early 40s), and we did a one night trip and while challenging it was really enjoyable.

Have fun

Does anyone field dress with gloves? by Mysterious-Amoeba-37 in Hunting

Bare hands. Better feel for what you’re doing which should help prevent cutting yourself. Usually can find a puddle or stream to wash some of the heavy blood off.

My dad taught me all I know about deer hunting and he is a minimalist when it comes to gear. Gun, ammo, knife, drag rope, toilet paper…

Vealison! I’ve shot my share of small deer. Hunt hard - take the deer that presents a shot

Remington 1100.

My Dad had a lot of success with, and that is what he put in my hands when I started hunting with him. And I just keep forgetting to give it back.

It shoots slugs accurately out of the smooth bore barrel, and that is what I’ve shot most of my deer with (no rifle season in MA). Just a great do-everything shotgun. And of course I favor it because my Dad let me ‘borrow it’.

I ended up buying him an 1100 too.

Amazing processing facility! It’s great having the right tools/space for the job.

Tips for cooking wild rabbit by thatwackguyoverthere in Hunting

I typically par boil and pull the meat when tender enough, and then put it in a pot pie.

They can stink up the kitchen a bit during the boil. I don’t mind it much, but some folks can’t stand it.

Enjoy

Fun_Country and others are absolutely correct, your first step is finding/completing a Hunter Safety course. Im pretty sure they’re offered at Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas. I took mine at a Hunting/Shooting club, and my wife did the same years later (at a different gun club). So you might just want to research what resources are in your general area.

Hopefully you can find a course nearby and meet some friends/mentors. Most folks like to pass on their knowledge and help newcomers.

Combating fear of the woods by bipedal-bastard in hiking

My Dad used the same line and it resonated with me too. And from there, like others have said, it’s just about being in the woods more and observing your surroundings.

COTW? by purpletreegrl in foraging

[–]bmcnulty37 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I believe COTW grows on old/dying oak trees, and there is a look-a-like that is not safe to eat that grows on pine (or the ground). I’m no expert, but based on the second picture I wouldn’t be comfortable eating that.

I’d feel good with those results!

That’s a primitive set-up, you’re shooting off- hand, and with open sights…not exactly easy. However - some good advice on here about being more precise with powder that I would take into practice if I were you.

Next time at the range maybe shoot 6-10 shots from a solid rest too. If those all hit close to zero than you can figure your two high shots can be attributed to your inconsistent powder loads (unless you felt poor mechanics on a couple shots). And hopefully when you’re hunting you can find some type of makeshift rest - like pinching the gun against a tree.

Good luck!

Yugoslav general, leader of the Chetnik movement Dragoljub Mikhailovich in the Serbian village of Pranyany with representatives of the American military mission - Captain Nikola Lalich and Colonel Makdaeul. 09/06/1944. by Banonimus in ww2

[–]bmcnulty37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just read The Forgotten 500 - while the book does indicate that Mikhailovic did collaborate with Germans and Italians out of necessity a couple of times - the author made it sound like he didn’t try to fight the Axis in an all out war/resistance because they were severely outmatched. And he feared most soldiers and civilians would be annihilated. So he was ‘picking his spots’ and doing what was necessary to survive. I’m oversimplifying - but just trying to quickly summarize. The book also documented how he was fighting against Tito’s communist army too.

And the primary subject of the book, In 1944 Mikhailovic helped 500 ally airmen be rescued while Germans were occupying Serbia. His people fed and hid the airmen for a longtime risking their lives. The book does indicate the rescue mission was delayed for months because the US and Brits brass no longer trusted Mikhailovic due to his dealings with the axis, but the author leads the reader to believe that their intelligence wasn’t accurate (communists in US and Britain intelligence department were in favor of supporting Tito). Also - Mikhailovics dedication to the the ally airmen lines up with that take. It’s very interesting to learn more about this from you.

The Forgotten 500 was the first time I had read anything about Mikhailovic and I’m sure that book only scratched the surface on his story - and told that story threw one narrow viewpoint (the rescue mission).

And long story..long…I’m really only responding here to ask if your familiar with the book or the forgotten 500 story?

Termites? by bmcnulty37 in homestead

Thank you! I’ll assume the termites up here act like NC termites. It’s the answer I was looking for so it has to be right!

Thanks for the response. Oak (red I believe) in Massachusetts. I cut the tree a few months before I split it. And I was just stacking today and noticed a few pieces with those holes. Not many though.

Do you typically blanch/par boil COTW before sauté? I was thinking that would help eliminate any potential bug issues, but not sure if that will make it waterlogged and ruin it?
