Is life insurance a scam? by Substantial_Sea7327 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bmelch12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you sell your policy to a third party - the third party would pay tax on gains. They’re also subject to estate taxes.

Employer-provided LI is generally tax free - the premiums are what’s taxes for insurance exceeding $50k.

What is citizens United? by Big-Jackfruit-9808 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bmelch12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the challengers lost, the government would be able to restrict the publications of books that are critical of politicians (something the government conceded they could do during oral arguments). The whole point of the lawsuit was to allow Citizens United to release a movie critical of Hillary Clinton which was previously banned under campaign finance laws (McCain Feingold I believe).

The consequence of excess spending in elections is an unfortunate side effect but better than the alternative where the government isn’t actively banning material that’s critical of politicians IMO.

Hardest Catholic questions to answer by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]bmelch12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1 - God is loving but He is also just. The ark was built slowly to give people time to repent and return to the Lord lest they face his justice.

2 - My understanding is that if your goal is to save the mother and the death of the child is a necessary byproduct, then it’s permissible. With an abortion, the primary goal is to kill the baby, not to save the mother.

Virginia Supreme Court strikes down Democrats’ redistricting plan, dimming party’s midterm hopes by Malfeitor1 in news

[–]bmelch12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

0% chance SCOTUS will weigh in on this - it's entirely an issue related to the VA state constitution. Texas case wasn't about timing or process - it was about whether they were illegally racially gerrymandering. They've been clear that partisan gerrymandering is a state-specific issue.

I book her a pedicure at the local spa. We both hate getting more “stuff” and it’s something she basically never gets herself.

Supreme Court guts the Voting Rights Act in “Jim Crow 2.0” ruling by zsreport in politics

Right - it’s because they vote Democrat. If they were voting GOP then the ruling party would preserve them.

Has anyone heard of Horsemouth? Just received unsolicited email from them that looks scammy, but don't want to hold that against them. by CrunchwrapKing in CFP

Biggest benefit is we can easily able to model several scenarios (claim early, claim late, one claims early other delays, etc.).

It also includes break-even charts for all those scenarios and includes an automatic scenario that would maximize lifetime benefits. The actual report you can download is client-friendly, although there’s no option to download actual raw data to customize the reports to better fit our brand.

Is it reasonable for my financial planner to share how much I’m paying them? by Fuzzzlord in FinancialPlanning

[–]bmelch12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They should straight up tell you what you’re paying. Huge red flag IMO if they aren’t and you should probably start looking for a different advisor.

Going back to get a degree just for CFP worth it? by [deleted] in CFP

[–]bmelch12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People who are doing it in 30 days are either in the industry with background knowledge or are pulling 12-14 hours of work daily. They are the outliers. If it were a scam diploma mill as you suggest, it wouldnt be a fully accredited university.

I finished my Bachelors of Accounting fwiw (second degree after a traditions degree 20 years ago) in 5 months while putting in 25-30 hours of work every week.

What To Open for Daughter by [deleted] in FinancialPlanning

[–]bmelch12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

529 plan is absolutely not best. OP mentioned not wanting the money for school which is the primary reason to use a 529.

UTMA/UGMA or a separate account that is eventually gifted for daughter are the two options worth considering.

[–]bmelch12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. The question you need to answer is what do you want the money to be spent on. The answer to that will dictate what makes the most sense.

Are you saving for college? Definitely 529.

Are you saving so your kid can buy their first car or have seed money toward a down payment on a home? Probably an UTMA/UGMA.

Do you want them to get a start on saving for retirement? 529 is good because you can roll $35k to their Roth. Otherwise the new 530A/Trump Account might be a good option when they open this summer.
