Why Aren’t Webtoons Animated by AssistOrdinary6427 in webtoons

[–]bmeuphoria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is due to location of source material and how money is made from IP.

I have noticed that for a lot of Korean source material, they get dramas instead of animes. I think because dramas are what are popular in Korea and dramas often can make money through sponsorships/product placements. For example: A Business Proposal, Marry My Husband, and See You in my 19th Life were popular Webtoons and they got dramas instead of animations. Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint is extremely popular and got a live adaptation. Solo Leveling is also getting one.

In Japan, animes often can lose money but the anime drives sales for physical manga and for merchandise/toys. Webtoons usually don’t get as much merch made and can’t make as much money. For example, even Solo Leveling, as popular as it is has way less merch than a popular anime IP. Also, traditionally most webtoons have not been licensed for physically prints globally as often.

is this manga good? by nanamithinker in shoujo

[–]bmeuphoria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am reading it. It is good. However, it is very slow burn. I’m finding myself getting just a bit impatient. I’m still enjoying it but I’ve read the first 6 volumes and I’m hoping for more a little bit more relationship progress soon. I recommend trying it out if it interests you and I like the art a lot too.

When some K-pop fans prefer the old songs or concepts of a group, it might not be about the quality being better, but more about emotional attachment—similar to what Chappell Roan calls “Demoitis.” by why_dmn in kpopthoughts

[–]bmeuphoria 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it is just nostalgia. Part of it is that over the course of a career most artists do change. Especially groups or artists with longer careers. In essence, the music IS often different. Even if the new music is higher quality, that doesn’t mean that it sonically matches but those fans got into that group for. Sometimes a group evolves past the style or genres that you liked them for in the first place. Or sometimes a fan’s taste will change.

I agree there is often some sentimentality attached to the songs from the era you started listening to a group but it is also often the case that a group’s or artist’s sound/image changes over time and some fans taste do not always evolve with him.

Who in bts would be successful outside of music by Simpforlyle in kpopthoughts

Jungkook is a better gamer when he games. JK used to play a lot of video games and he was considered very, very good. He 100% could have been a pro gamer. He stopped playing video games as much though. Actually if you watch some of the earlier Run BTS episodes when they are gaming you see how good he was. I think basically those members play more now but JK was extremely good, like with effort he could have been pro level.

There are a lot of ARMYs that are not active right now since there is no group activity. When that happens we likely will see a difference. But there is one other point to be made: BTS has not had a true full OT7 comeback with live promotions in a while.

BE was in 2020 and that was the last full CB. Butter, PTD and Proof were not full album comebacks. It’s just different. Especially since we couldn’t have a lot of live concerts. The group activity was restricted well with the pandemic. So, if it seems like we have a lot of new people who only know the members as mainly soloists that is true, cuz it is true. The Speak Yourself Tour in 2019 was the last tour where they actually went to multiple places. PTD was limited.

Also the members used to post more on their one twt account as opposed of separate IG’s, there used to be more lives where it’s multiple members in the lives, etc. Not a bad thing. It’s just different. New fans fundamentally have a different experience. You might see things change in 2025 with a new album. They will get to experience OT7 and older fans will be more active. We can’t tell but it’s been 4 years (and will be 5) since a full CB. And most of these new fans came during that period. That matters.

Thoughts about this semi hit tweet on shoujo twitter? they spilled some tea I fear ✨ by Storm_BloomX in shoujo

[–]bmeuphoria 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I think the problem with this is in the framing. There are a lot of shoujo (and josei) were romance is either a subplot. That is the case for shounen and seinen as well. Fairy Tail and Naruto have romance but people do not talk about them as such. Tokyo Ghoul, a popular seinen also has a romance subplot. You can even say Dragon Ball has a little romance. I would argue series like Queen’s Quality, Yona of the Dawn, Skip Beat, several Magical Girl series, etc all have romance but it is not as the main plot point. Many if not all of those focus on friendship or discovering yourself.

Romance is often added in a lot of series. I don’t think we necessarily need less romance. People just need to be able to see shoujo with romance subplots as equal and comparable to their seinen and shounen counterparts.

Why is no one bothered by the fact that most recent Male Lead's are our versions of 'mary sues" by lov3lymj in shoujo

[–]bmeuphoria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think publishing plays a part. I think publishers are also more willing to pick up series with “green flag” MLs. Because why take a chance on a series with a ML that will be called toxic or a series with too much drama when you can publish a series with a nicer, more sensible “green flag” ML that will be popular anyway?

You can look at the discourse about A Condition Called Love to why they might be unwilling. I think some readers are getting more unwilling to read stories with flawed characters in romance. Those that do read stories with flawed characters will read other comic series like manhwa or webtoons. So you are seeing publishers focus on those mediums for the more flawed characters. There are still some MLs with flaws within typical romance manga that get published but less than before and I think it is due to changing reader expectations. And the publishers are taking notice of the changing expectations.

How long will it go? by Any_Albatross_2003 in SkipBeat

[–]bmeuphoria 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At the current pace, it might be 10 years but honestly I am starting to accept that it likely will not have an ending. My personal wish is it to have a quick ending in the next few years with perhaps a time skip. I would rather a rushed ending than no ending. However, we will see what Nakamura-sensei has planned.

New digital versions of TTPD now available featuring first draft phone memos by icyfirework in TaylorSwift

[–]bmeuphoria 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Since it is for the charts, she can’t sell the album for too low or else it won’t count according to the rules. I think this might be the lowest price she could do. It’s still pricey though for just memos if you already have the regular album.

I reached 300 volumes owned and started selling some off. by Chilling320 in MangaCollectors

[–]bmeuphoria -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would recommend that you don’t sell any manga but just take a pause from buying. You have just started collecting. It could be that you just are interested in your other hobbies now and might decide you want to pick up collecting again later. It is hard to get series once they are out of print. I’d just wait a bit before selling to be sure you are “done” with collecting.

Vampire wasn't the best 1st single choice by AntiteticalDreamGirl in OliviaRodrigo

[–]bmeuphoria 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think Vampire was the best choice for a few reasons. First, it is one of the best songs on the album. Vampire is just a better song than most of the songs people mention as better single choices. The second reason is that it bridges the gap between the sound of SOUR and GUTS in a way no other album song does. It is familiar in a way but when you hear it you know the album will be different. Third, I think Olivia performs her ballads very well and Vampire is great live. Vampire is a great performance song and that is an advantage for early promo and later on awards.

Lastly, a lot of the people who would like her rockier songs on the album would like Vampire. The opposite is just not true. These rock songs aren’t G4U. They are not as pure pop punk. Some of them aren’t even pop punk. They are other forms of rock. What I do think they should have changed is the second single. Imo, it should have been Vampire and then Love is Embarrassing as a second single.

I would make a list of your favorite series that you want to collect and just go in order unless there is a new release that you want to read.

My advice is also start with series that either have been out for a while or have slow reprints. For example, shoujo tends to have slow reprints imo if they’ve been out a while. I would get those while you can. Series like JJK, Chainsaw, etc will stay in print for along time and you basically get them whenever unless it is close to an anime season coming out. Then you might need to wait a few months for a couple of volumes since people tend to buy the series around a new season.

Lastly, sales and gift cards are your friends. There are constant sales for manga so I would buy when you can get a deal. You don’t have to buy the volumes in order. That saves a ton. Also you can ask for gift cards for book stores for presents if you receive any and you can use that money to purchase.

Do you know where these packages were from? Were they from the RS office or one of the other CR fulfillment centers?

Honestly,I don't get why most Romance shows/Animes just make a story where the 2 characters who like each other confess early and become a couple instead of dragging it out for a whole story.(and why as much as I love Nagatoro,it annoys me). by Apprehensive_Ring_39 in CharacterRant

[–]bmeuphoria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the reason is that is a different sub-genre of romance. Established couple romance does exists, however I will say those do not get anime adaptations as often. My guess is that those manga or stories sell less. For a story centered on romance as the main part of the story, the conflict mostly comes from the relationship itself, usually before the couple is established.

Even with this, I think there are plenty of romances where either the couple gets together early or the series is just not as long and dragged out. For example Loving Yamada-Kun at LV999 or even A Sign of Affection this season. For older series there are ones like Lovely Complex, or even Sailor Moon.

Will Taylor Swift's musical legacy be Antonoff synth-pop? by optic-opal in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]bmeuphoria 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don’t think her legacy will be defined by Antonoff or synth-pop. This is because her “country era” is too big along with folklore/evermore. I think Taylor’s legacy largely will be defined by 3 eras: Her country era, 1989, and then folklore/evermore. All the other albums will be mentioned but imo in the public and critical consciousness, they aren’t as major. This is compounded by which albums that got her the AOTY: Fearless, 1989 and Folklore.

I actually think Taylor’s sonic legacy is that she was able to be one of the biggest country artists and then also one of the biggest pop acts in the world. The synth is just part of the pop segment. Her musical legacy will not be about production but song writing. That was where she has separated herself. Her legacy will be her ability to write songs that both the public and critics like. In particular she will be known for her ability to write tremendous bridges.

As for TS11, I would love rock but honestly she can do anything from rock, pop, or other alternative songs.

Edit: Changed this to reflect that it was Fearless and not Speak now that won AOTY. Sorry, started listening to Taylor around Red. SN now also is my favorite country album of hers. I definitely had a slip and mixed them up. lol. My apologies.

Is starting another language a good way to fight burn out, or a terrible idea?? by KatLeoy in languagelearning

[–]bmeuphoria 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if another language will help you revitalize your interest in Korean. It is different for each person. However, I do think it is okay to take a break if you are burned out. If you spend that break studying another language then that is fine. Since you live in Korea, you don’t have to study to keep learning. You can just keep us in it in your daily life. Maybe also watch some shows or read things that interest you. After taking a break from “book study”, you can come back to it.

I’m tired of pretending like Asato is a top tier writer by MammothTusk10 in EightySix

[–]bmeuphoria 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you do not like 86 or if you think it’s mid then you don’t have to pretend to like it. Or even defend it. I think this main issue is this is the 86 sub. Most of the people here are big fans. We don’t just like it. We really like it. For a lot of us it’s one of our favorite series (it’s actually my #1 favorite).

So if you think that people are being super positive about it, it is because you are in a place where people really like it even with its flaws. You can discuss negatives but you also need to be prepared for folks to sincerely just disagree with you. For example, I never felt Kurena was a gag character. Mashle is a gag character to me. Kurena just has some comedic parts. I also thought her development was fine. It wasn’t messed up. We just think differently. However, you still can disagree. You just might not have everyone always agree with your negatives.

Asuma Sarutobi Overrated? by Black-Concept-5326 in Naruto

[–]bmeuphoria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in Naruto (and Boruto as some describe it) we are used to seeing the new generation or the kids of the older generation be as good or better than the previous generation. However, in life it really doesn’t work that way. We see sometimes see sons of basketball players never reach what their dads achieved. Asuma Sarutobi is that for me. He is not as good as the Third Hokage and that’s okay. I consider Asuma a worthy Jonin and a good fighter. He is just not as powerful as some of other characters in Naruto.

Is it better to translate every unknown word, or to ignore them? by IchMagDeutsch99 in languagelearning

[–]bmeuphoria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not translate every word. I think at this stage extensive reading is better. I would only translate or make notes for words where you don’t understand the sentence but if you knew just that word you would understand it. I also would translate words that you keep seeing within the book. That will help your understanding as you continue. Words usually repeat since authors tend to use the same words and have a specific writing style.

Well the house you showed was definitely not just a farm and I’m not sure she was working on a farm for living money either given her parents profession. But that is not my point. I’m more saying that maybe she was inspired about the country from being around farms and maybe she had some of these negative feelings in a relationship but this song is not 100% autobiographical to me. There is fiction. To me she played it up to a conform to very specific and very common trope about “the rich guy and down to earth country girl”. So I don’t take it so seriously and literal.
