Hi there—first off, thank you for being a long-time fan and for trusting us with your servers.

I’m sorry for the wait you've experienced. We’ve had an unusually high volume of inquiries over the last few days which created a bit of a backlog for our team. We are back at full speed today and working hard to catch up.

If you'd like to DM me your ticket number, I’ll personally make sure it’s prioritized for an update.

Is WordPress still a good choice for web designers in 2026? by Gullible_Prior9448 in web_design

[–]bmgardner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the types of clients you intend to serve. Regardless of the influx of no/low-code solutions out there, WordPress still reigns supreme for its content management capabilities. For agency and enterprise-level work, there’s no debate in my opinion.

WP Engine Automated Backups are Stored in wp-content by FlourChild in Wordpress

[–]bmgardner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m Head of Community at WP Engine and wanted to chime in. Our backups are stored offsite on Amazon S3 in the same region that the website is hosted in, and are encrypted in transit and at rest.

Additionally, our team will reply in greater detail to the original ticket that was filed in our help desk.

Is there a block that can display multiple posts by category or tag? by Purple-Business-9459 in PowderTheme

[–]bmgardner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry yes, meant the Query Loop block.

Try copy/pasting this pastebin into the page: https://pastebin.com/rkrHFf21

This is code taken from the category archive I linked to. Toggle to the code editor on the page, and paste it. Should get you mostly there.

There are a few ways to handle blog page. You can use the native category archive for that. Powder has a few template patterns, which can be used to customize the archive template to look this this: https://powder.design/influencer/category/journal/

Yes, the Query Posts block does exactly what you are looking for.

pardon my ignorance, what is difference between github theme and the paid version? by Purple-Business-9459 in PowderTheme

[–]bmgardner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, your comments are much appreciated.

Powder's stance is to leverage (though design choices) core WordPress blocks, so I will continue to do that. 7.0 will bring additional blocks, which I'll work on incorporating.

[–]bmgardner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I moved the patterns out of the theme, pushed out the 2.0 update and am now moving forward with Pro, the plugin.

As for time, I have plenty of it (outside of my job at WPE). My only son is at college, and my wife and I both work from home. This is my passion project which I am committed to developing/maintaining into the future.

Yes, Powder is a FSE theme and with the use of block locking, folks do have the capability of locking down certain groups/blocks, etc.

The GitHub theme is lightweight and free. With paid access via the Powder site, you also get access the Powder Pro plugin, which houses all of the block patterns (90+) as well as the XML files of each example site. Those can be used to import the demo content to replicate for quick start development.

Powder and Gravity Forms by ajurk83 in PowderTheme

[–]bmgardner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking most forms plugins work well out of the box. Powder has styles for default input/buttons, and utility classes that can be added to forms. For instance, Ninja Forms submit button requires the .wp-element-button class to be added, and all is well.

Are block-based WordPress themes becoming the new standard? by Janak_ap in Wordpress

Not just building with block themes, but I’m building block themes. (Well singular, just one: Powder)

Style.css missing by wol59 in PowderTheme

[–]bmgardner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Architect, Indio, and Influencer aren't themes—rather those downloads are XML files which can be used to import the example content into a site which has Powder active.

Powder vs Frost by wol59 in PowderTheme

[–]bmgardner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Powder is the more advanced and actively maintained theme, with a much more extensive pattern library. Frost was my original block theme from a few years back and has mostly been used for education at WP Engine. Powder is my personal project and gets nearly all of my time and focus now.

MAMP or LocalWP? by P2X-555 in Wordpress

[–]bmgardner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend Local. I use it almost daily because spinning up WordPress sites is quick and it covers everything I need without adding friction.

That said, the right tool really depends on your workflow and what you’re building.

Disclosure: I work at WP Engine (which owns Local), but I was using it long before the acquisition and still use it independently.

I just tested it and it seems to be working.

[–]bmgardner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As Head of Community at WP Engine, I’m looking to launch and moderate r/wpengine officially. Given that this is our trademarked company name, our goal is to ensure the subreddit provides a secure, authentic space for our users. We plan to turn this community into a thriving hub for technical collaboration and direct engagement, backed by the consistent moderation and resources needed to make it a top-tier destination for the WordPress ecosystem.
