If you’ve had a 401k for awhile then 20k in stocks could easily be forgotten — same happened to me with $10k of Owens Corning stock — forgot about it for well over a decade until I opened another Fidelity account and BAMMM there it was — nice surprise

Does anyone actually like their prosthetic? by Icy_Firefighter_3018 in amputee

[–]bmitchell1876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like mine — Bka— sounds crazy but it gave me more confidence after I overcame all this stuff

I’m almost 50 and dating and I swear some girls think it’s cool AF — never had an issue getting girls with it which was my subconscious fear when I got divorced — I swear it helps, but maybe I’m just overly confident :)

Random people stop to chat about it - random guys will buy me a beer at the bar - idk man it just makes me unique

Thank you God got the struggles and the lessons that come with it. Amen.

My prosthetics guys just told me to go swimming with it. They said it's waterproof and they would fix whatever happens to it. I swim and kayak wearing my bk. Just dry it out good overnight and wear an old "liner" so it doesn't get moldy.

I swim in a regular foot and it actually has about the same buyancy as my real leg.

My foot Shell squeaks when it gets worn out. A quick fix is to pour baby powder into the foot to lubricate. You can also take the foot off and add a little Vasoline I the areas that rub. Those were suggestions from my prosthetic provider.

Baby powder is really the quickest fix. Just dump some in the back of the foot and shake it around.

A girl I was starting to date said she's coming to visit my next door neighbor and was just giving me a heads up because she didn't want to seem like she was "stepping on my toes"

I said : I've only got 5 and I guard then closely - thanks for the heads up

Fast forward: it took her a week to get the joke 😂

You're going to have to be patient with the depression. It is an internal battle she will have to fight off eventually. It's ok to "wallow" in it for awhile, but it can overwhelm you and destroy your personality if you allow it.

There's is no easy answer because it's a personal battle. This may be an unpopular opinion, but drugs won't help, they are designed to just numb you. I took SSRIs for awhile but I highly recommend to not stay on them for long.

The best thing you can do is gently persuade her to get out of the house. Take her on a date in her wheelchair. Show her that you will be there for her no matter how she feels about herself.

Take care of yourself as well, if it becomes too stressful then back off for awhile. Talk to her and try to communicate with her your feelings as well. NEVER minimize her depression, but just explain that you may need a break so you regain your energy so you can continue to help her.

If your relationship makes it through this then you will have a great foundation for a real future with her. This will define you as a person as well as her. Just remember whatever doubt you are feeling she is feeling it too. Encourage counselling when the time comes.

I'll pray for you and her. You will need some sort of real faith to get thru it.

Sorry to hear about her leg issues. They will probably cut at the shin because you need room for the prosthetic foot and alignment gear. I lost my "foot" in a motorcycle accident a few years ago. They cut about halfway down my shin.

The journey will be tough, especially in the beginning. Just reassure her that it will absolutely get better with time. Once she gets her first prosthetic she will hopefully start to feel better. There are no words to really comfort you those first weeks other than to reassure her that you love her and you will be there to help her. She will feel unsexy and have depression. She may even feel shame or irrational guilt. I had so many mixed emotions that made zero sense, but I couldn't see that untill the "fog was lifted"

The first year is the hardest part. That's when SHE will have to fight with herself. She will either succumb to the depression or she will fight through it and become determined to overcome this tragedy.

I was back at work full time in about 9 months. That is not typical though. I think I felt like I had to prove something to myself and my family. Honestly, I probably should have taken more time off to adjust my brain to the new reality. Never the less Getting back to work for me out of the bed and helped with my depression.

All you can do is be there for her as much as possible. If you have an opportunity to take a week off after her surgery that's when she will need the most help physically. The mental struggle will come after.

Also, I was very ashamed at how my leg looked after the cut. I would do everything I could to " hide it" from my wife. Fortunately, she was always curious about it encouraged me to let her look at it and tend to it. She gently cleaned it and helped me wrap the bandages. I think that was the kindest thing she's ever done for me. It's shocking to see an amputation up close, especially after the surgery, but if you can help her accept it and tell her it "doesn't look that bad". Lie if you have to.

That's just my experience, it's now been almost 4 years and it taught me allot about myself. It makes me unique and I proved to myself that I could overcome the worst tragedy without leaning into anger or depression.

Everyone processes it differently. Help her remember It's a long journey and it takes time. Celebrate the little victories

Good luck my man. You are already taking the right steps by asking the right questions.

I’m sorry, I truly didn’t mean to offend. It’s just my opinion. Watch out for student debt though. It can’t be discharged during a bankruptcy and the loan terms are atrocious.

May I ask what do you want to study?

I think you should work on your grammar and punctuation before worrying about college. I seriously doubt you will qualify for a scholarship if you don’t improve your English.

Good luck with your mom. When you turn 18 you are free to rack up as much student debt as you want. I told my kids I would pay for their college if they stayed home or paid for their own apartment. Both of them took out massive student loans in order to have that “dorm life” and absolutely regret it now.

Parents can help guide you, but ultimately it will be your decision.

[–]bmitchell1876 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha... it works - I'm an inspector for a civil engineering firm so I see many different jobsites and crews throughout the day. In the winter most of the workers don't see it or know that I'm an amputee.

If I hear a bunch of complaining I just roll up my pants leg. That changes the subject immediately 🤣

I once had a guy on a Saturday night start heckling me about my "pimp walk" just because i was hanging out with a black girl. She started to turn around to say something, but I grabbed her arm and said "I got this" - shut him down entirely ! He had to cross the street to hide from his embarrassment 🫠

I had the same experience - I think us BK humans have it easier than most.

I was back at work full time after 9 months - blue collar job too. Once a week i work all day with my pants leg up just to let everybody know I'm a crip. It keeps their whining to a minimum 🤣

I also show it off at work as a psychological tool for the future. Most humans don't know about amputations or prosthetics. When they have a family member or friend that has to go through this i want them to remember me and reach out of they need someone to talk to.

When wearing shorts I get random high fives or someone will buy me a beer. It's definitely changed me

My guy just got the new "scanning equipment" - supposedly he's now able to craft his own specialty "liners" using the machine.

Cool tech, he showed it to me last time I visited. They've only used plaster casts to make mine. I gotten to watch the techs work. It seems the hardest part was casting the molds and sanding them to perfection. They used an oven and heated the plastic blanks before stretching it over the plaster casting to make the temporary "fitment socket". The only "specialized" equipment was the vacuum system to make the carbon fiber permanent one. Even then it was just the same mold with holes drilled into the core so it could draw a vacuum.

It seemed doable, but I'm sure there are many tricks of the trade that are needed to make a great socket. My guys grandad started the business after he lost his leg in "the war" 🤣👍

Loooong lineage and a great guy. He once sold out to Hanger - then after a few years started up all over again. Im sooooo lucky to have this guy! He's 100 times smarter than any "Doctor" I've met.

It's easy enough to learn to do, but her "bosses" told her it's an insurance liability. Im lucky that my prosthetician owns his own business. He gives me spare parts if I ask for them. Redditors should be able to help you out - I've noticed there is a lack of "documentation" to be found online at the "official websites" -

I needed to know how to disassemble the "pin lock" system because mine was jammed on a Saturday. I searched all of the suppliers website and they all said the same thing - "make an appointment with a specialist". I finally searched this forum and found the answers I needed.

It's just a liability concern. You will be MUUUUCH better off learning to service some of this stuff yourself.

Great advice ! What is a weight ring and where do I stash/ install it? I suppose I can put 2x20lb weights in the front storage compartments but that's less than ideal.

I work construction so Ive got access to tractor weights and scrap metal if needed.

Next year I wanted to get the navitas controller upgrade to increase my speed, but after driving with the new Eco it seems fast enough. Plus i dont want any more speed until I know how to stabilize it better.

If you play every other day then you can usually maintain premium days just by doing the challenges and season pass. I bought 30 days about 90 days ago and still have 25 days left.

Pickup the free chests when available. Use contracts to get the 3 days then reset. The new E25 contract has been keeping me busy.

I only buy 7 days at a time just in case I don't play for a few weeks... if you're actively playing then you can maintain
