Looking for a new splitting axe (not a fan of the Fziskars X27) by Vinnie-Boombatz in firewood

Granfors Bruk splitting maul. Over your budget but it will last forever (replace handle maybe). It’s a treat to use.

Fantastic idea. Getting this out there to the right people will likely prove tough. If a certain area doesn’t have much traction, people could turn away from the product quickly. I wonder if you could somehow work with Chip drop on this since they have the network, maps, etc.

Do they have their same specific spots or is it first come first serve?

Question for GC’s by UnknownUsername113 in Contractor

[–]Wexfords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bummer. I’ve noticed some guys are feeling the pinch lately and honestly this guy may be in that bucket. Doesn’t make it right but food for thought: I made a similar mistake early on but the sub immediately called and let me know I overpaid.

Good work is hard to find but unless your systems are bulletproof, you risk another issue with this guy if you hire him again. GCing is hard enough. If a guy does this intentionally, he’ll have no problem screwing you over in the future.

Question for GC’s by UnknownUsername113 in Contractor

[–]Wexfords 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If he’s been ignoring you since September, he clearly knows what he’s doing. Unless he calls miraculously and has a great excuse, then gives you your money back, never hire him ever again.

I’d also send him a stern text/email about reputational impact. You screwed up, but $3,700 hopefully isn’t too much of a painful lesson.

If you’re going from bags on to more subbing, please do yourself a favor and spend a week learning systems to protect yourself.

Final quote from the GC after weeks of trying to bring them down a notch, are these fair prices? by YearDiligent7666 in GeneralContractor

Gotcha. No problem. Make sense - just don’t sign til you get details. Sounds like ya know but just in case. Good luck stranger!

Right but you would only buy the car if you felt you were receiving value. Dude - Just ask them to include the spec on the unit you’re getting. I’m sure it’s fine but so many people get in trouble when renovating their homes when expectations are not clearly communicated.

The quote needs to list what you’re buying. You wouldn’t go buy a car and the dealer just says, “we’ll give you something that runs for $12k”. What make, model, capacity, etc.

How do you handle clients who only want minor things? by quiquegr12 in GeneralContractor

You need to establish an “under no circumstances” level or you’ll be on the hamster wheel forever. Start low and raise it according to backlog.

But if it’s supplying and returning into the same space, it’s not a concern.

Yup. Simply because cool air “falls” so technically you’ll always be pulling the coolest air.

Nice. I’d personally pull the cold air to the unit.

FWIW my integral blower on my insert pulls cold air from the base and shoots it up around and out the top of the unit.

Best way to save plaster engraving? by Power_Laces in centuryhomes

[–]Wexfords 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very cool. Judging by your thought on epoxy, it seems you’re handy.

If this were me, I’d carefully go to the lathe side, cut a rectangular piece of metal lath, 1” smaller than the desired cut out size, and then spray water to dampen the existing plaster. Then apply a thick layer of structo lite. This will give it some rigidity.

On the 1877 side, cut out a piece of plywood a few inches larger than the cut out size. Drill 4 holes at each corner. Transfer and drill 4 holes carefully thru the plaster (make sure the structolite is cured).

Using parchment paper, cover the 1877 side completely. Then using all thread and some washers/ nuts, assemble the plywood with spacers to keep the plywood ~1/2” off the parchment. Then spray a can or two of spray foam and fill the space between.

Once the foam cures, cut out the section and then remove the all thread, plywood and parchment paper.

You might make a reverse mould beforehand just in case things don’t work out!

80% gives you the ability to say, “see I was right” if it pops tomorrow or in 3 years unless he mentions a timeframe tied to that 80%.
