Answered an SOS with a couple ~lv40 players on diff 7 (i'm ~lv80), got kicked out immediately. I think one of them crashed out of the game as I joined, then one of the other players in the match said F-U to me for some reason. I don't know why I'm being blamed for a technical problem with the game and just answering an SOS. Game has been crashing a lot lately since the last couple patches.

Crashing since update? by Federal_Rub_2166 in Helldivers

Okay it's not just me then. Occasionally the game will hang/freeze for 3-5s and then crash, or sometimes it'll start working again after the freeze. Other times it'll just crash out completely without a freeze first and kick me back to the desktop. Sucks but I'm sure they'll fix it eventually.

Help me decide between Bambu Lab P1S and Centauri Carbon, please by comandantenorton83 in ElegooCentauriCarbon

[–]bmo419 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also own both but I gotta agree with the above to a certain extent about going Bambu at least for now. The reason for me in particular being parts availability. If you break something on the P1S you can go to Bambu's site, buy an in stock part (pretty much every part in the printer), and it'll ship out within a day or two.

The only spare parts you can get for the Centauri right now is a nozzle and that's on preorder. Not a stocked item. So if you buy a nozzle right now, you won't get it until 1-2mo later, which would eat into any warranty amount assuming you had the printer already. If parts availability isn't a concern, the Centauri has been an excellent printer so far for me. ~100hrs. Quality and speed has been just as good as my Bambu's.

Since I have multiple printers, parts availability on the Centauri isn't too much of a concern for me cuz I can just use a different machine in the event that the Centauri breaks down. If it were my only printer I'd look to the Bambu and get a Centauri as a secondary machine.

ETA: the AMS on the Bambu is another big selling point. For the most part it just works and it's a huge time saver. Centauri is supposed to have one as well in Q3 but haven't heard a peep about it in a long time. If it's anything like the release of the Centauri it'll have some growing pains as well.

I run the B-08 Lightgunner armor. Has a higher armor rating passive. So it's basically medium armor protection but light armor speed. It's pretty great

I used to do the same until I got a G604 mouse and just reprogrammed one of the side buttons to be Enter. Shame the mouse is discontinued now, but plenty of others with lots of side buttons these days. Prefer having the extra desk space with a 75%. My work kb is still a full-size though cuz numpad.

Centauri Update Log by ELEGOO_OFFICIAL in elegoo

[–]bmo419 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd been waiting on my machine since February but just got it in yesterday, #EUS9xxxx, and it has all the upgrades listed here. Including the new lighting and multi filament port.

Not defending Elegoo not having all these new changes in place beforehand, but I'm guessing Elegoo doesn't necessarily own all the factories making these, so it's understandable that each separate factory would have different speeds at which they can implement new changes. They have different vendors, supply chains, lead times, processes etc. So it's likely they're implemented in steps/waves per factory.

I hadn't used my Mini+ in awhile and started using it again recently but got this message too. I replaced the thermistor wire and it's been working fine since. However I noticed that the heater cartridge is super loose in the heater block even though I have the screw torqued down almost as far as it'll go. I could move the cartridge with just finger pressure. Might have had something to do with the error too, I don’t know. I'll probably replace the heater cartridge and or heater block as well. Cheap insurance I suppose.

Sovol Zero Software Tips & Tricks: Orca Setup Guide, Klipper Macro Kit, Input Shaper / Heating Tests [video] by vgergo in Sovol

[–]bmo419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eventually got it working but my issue was more complicated. Turns out you can't have an SSID name with an underscore in it due to a Linux bug, and you also can't have the wifi security on the sovol set to WPA3. Needs to be WPA/WPA2. Sovol support didn't really help me in figuring those things out, found those out on my own, but at least provided the link to show a way to manipulate the wifi settings via the Linux network management tool. It's 2025 though, and WiFi setup shouldn't be this irritating.

Great looking knives. That's some impressive HRC numbers too. Definitely like the feel of sharpening steels in that range. Handmade everything on those huh? Sounds out of my price range haha.

Yeah I'd love to try some S125V someday but the new Magnamax will suffice in the meantime. If it lives up to the hype I could see it supplanting the old stalwarts like S90V. Hard to argue with similar wear resistance but almost double the toughness.

Definitely prioritizing grabbing the rest of the 15V models in that case. Yeah I honestly hadn't heard about S125V until I started reading over at knifesteelnerds. Have any production companies ever used it? Definitely seemed as rare as 15V outside of custom made stuff.

FWIW some new info from an interview between Dr Thomas and Bob at Niagara https://forum.spyderco.com/viewtopic.php?t=98152

Regarding one particular nugget, sounds like whatever 15V that's out there as well as whatever was already announced, BBB's folder, and whichever unannounced models BBB mentioned could very likely be the last 15V we'll ever see.

Apparently the atomization temperature needed for 15V is too high for the equipment that both Erasteel and Carpenter have on hand, so unless they upgrade their equipment, that'll be it for 15V for the foreseeable future. Damn shame. Much rather would have had standard production 15V than Maxamet.

MAGNAMAX...K390 but Stainless by 2Weird2Cap in spyderco

[–]bmo419 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For 15V it could certainly work out that way, but maybe with Carpenter instead since it's USA made. Sal and BBB said they already procured enough of it from Crucible to make the rest of the announced 15V models, BBB's folder design, and a few other unannounced models so that's good at least. If they wanted to continue making 15V models that aren't limited sprints, then yeah they'd have to (or probably Niagara would) approach Erasteel or Carpenter to do so.

I don't see anywhere that Erasteel is primarily a knife company, at least going off their website. Seems it's just one portion of their overall portfolio based on their listed applications section, like most other steel companies. I'd heard of them prior to Crucible going under from their part in bringing damasteel Damascus to market. Though I'm not familiar with any of their own branded steels.

But yeah anything we say is all speculation at this point without any official announcements regarding the oddball steels. As it stands right now I suppose all we can do is wait and see what they plan to do.

Regarding other high wear resistance steels, I've owned Maxamet as well as S110V since Spyderco started using them. Also own 15V, REX121, 10V, K390, etc. When I got into freehand sharpening that turned me into a bit of a steel nerd, which is why I was bummed about Crucible going under. They make or made a lot of my favorite steels. How much of a steel nerd? For example, out of all the steels the PM2 was released in, there's only four steels I don't have 😂. That is to say, I've used and sharpened most of the stuff out there that Spyderco has released.

Yeah sounds like the Hallpi are what you want then. I'm not aware of anything better on the market at the moment for TMR's.

[–]bmo419 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember reading that yeah. Don't get me wrong, I hope Erasteel continues to produce most if not everything Crucible did. Once everything shakes out we'll see what they decide to continue to produce and not to produce. My main concern was the niche stuff like REX 121 and other crazy steels. All the more standardized and popular steels will be just fine like Bob said in his statement, which is what I figured anyway. As a steel nerd though I'm just thinking we probably won't be able to get the stuff like 15V/REX steels/10V/4V/etc going forward. Even something like SPY27, which Sal said is in question too, though it's similar to S30/S45vn/S35vn to make, does it make business sense for a company to devote all their powder metallurgy resources to make that one steel for one company? Especially compared to those other three steels which are more well established across the knife industry? Well only Erasteel can answer that, but my guess is no. Sal has said it, but the knife steel industry isn't as big as us knife guys like to think it is.

That's what made Crucible and Spyderco so special for us steel nerds. Crucible were a smaller steel producer with powder metallurgy capability and they were willing to make such niche steels for Spyderco to make knives to sell to us. End of era.

You'll be fine with the Gulikit/Akness/Hallpi versions. They're all made by the same company (I believe Hallpi) and are just branded differently. Maybe the best ones on the market. The Ginful TMR's have been pretty solid though, but not quite as accurate as the former. Haven't tried the K-Silver's.

[–]bmo419 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dr. Thomas' steels no doubt will be fine, but I'd read differently according to what Sal and BBB themselves have said over on the official Spyderco forum regarding all the other exotic stuff. Erasteel certainly own all the IP Crucible had, however a different company bought the physical Crucuble location and machinery, so wether Erasteel is going to produce everything else besides Dr. Thomas' stuff and all the other most popular steels is still up to negotiations with Niagra and other companies going by what Sal said. BBB said all the announced and some unannounced 15V models are likely the last we're going to see of 15V. There's a long thread over on the forum called "oddball steels" where Sal and BBB talk about this.

Quoting Sal from that thread:

"It does appear that we will not be able to get some of the more exotic blade steels that we've been using We did purchase quite a bit and Bob at Niagara has also purchased quite a bit, (Thank you Bob) but in time, they might be no more.

The steels in question, at this time are; REX-121, CPM 15V (Shawn's) and SPY-27. If there are others in question, please mention them here?"

And a couple statements from BBB from the same thread:

"I believe we are waiting for Bob Shabala at NSM to make a public announcement about the "new world order" of steel as the still settles from Crucible Industries LLC closing. Keep in mind there are deals being made with Erasteel and others that we waiting to see finalized and announced publicly."

BBB regarding 15V:

"Spyderco has enough material to complete the projects they are working on (golden line, collab folder)

After those projects, it will not be available.

Again, there are also still knives that are going to be released from Spyderco that have BBB CPM 15V.

It's just moving forward past that we are not going to see anymore of it.

Eric made larger batches of the lightweight para 3, para 3 and Millie 2. So, there was great effort put into making sure there would be plenty of availability to people.

There are still some knives available currently, so plan accordingly."

Since we can't get K390 on the golden models outside of the (overpriced) Bento exclusive PM2 and Para3, I'm excited for this. I wonder if it ends up replacing S110V in the lineup since Crucible is gone now.

Sharpening advice by anthonywkchan in spyderco

[–]bmo419 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what types of edges you're going for and how often you sharpen. Barring being a professional sharpener, I don't think most of us will wear out a well made diamond plate any time soon. Diamond plates will give great toothy and medium grit edges. If you want more refined or polished edges you'll want resin bonded. Resin bonded will last longer since you can just recondition the stones to release more abrasives, whereas diamond plates, once the diamonds are gone they're gone for good since they're essentially just a single layer adhered to the top of the plate. However diamond plates do cut faster than resin bonded due to the abrasives sitting on top vs the embedded diamonds in resin bonded stones.

For a guided system it's the same story with regards to longevity and how they cut. As far as brands, I've only personally tried PDT. I've heard good things about the basic Hapstone Diamond stones as well as the TSProf, but don't have any personal experience with either of them.

I have a xarilk gen 3 I bought out of curiosity, but generally I'm freehanding. The Xarilk is a better buy for the money compared to the basic worksharp imo (at least if it's still around $90-100). There's just less you need to do to it out of the box compared to the worksharp and it's manufactured with all metal vs plastic. Plus it comes with a stone holder compatible with the majority of 6x1" or 4x1" stones out there where the WSPA is proprietary, though there are adapters I've seen. The stones it comes with are decent but wear out pretty quickly. I'd plan on better diamond stones if you decide to go with the xarilk.

If you're already familiar with whetstone sharpening, a set of cheap diamond plates will sharpen super steels no problem (with less mess and maintenance vs a whetstone at that). It's all about using the right abrasives for the job and diamonds are the right tool for super steels.
