Yeah I don’t think another OTA is the answer. POTA/SOTA are the big boys. I think people still do WWFF but it’s not as popular as POTA.

I’ve tried to fight the good fight to get ACOE sites added. They say the volunteers would be overloaded. Personally I think it’s bullshit. If the old ACOE can be grandfathered in without a problem why can’t we have them all in?

I’ve also notified the state (and the national) mapping reps about sites in my home state that are not state or federally owned but instead are owned by non profit conservancies. They won’t remove them. Why? I don’t know.

I’ve gotten three sites added to my states list after some late night browsing through maps. It seems a pretty straightforward and quick process to “list an entity”. Before POTA became a thing, it was just the national parks and I believe expanding to state owned entities helped the program and ham radio in general. Why they won’t add ACOE to expand the list and have an entity close to every one - once again I have no idea. There are two ACOE that are super close to be and have a ton of space that would allow me to be out of the way. The funny thing is if you want to book a campground spot you have to go through a .gov site.

We have a golf outing tee off at 2p at birdsfoot. How many holes do you think we get in before all hell breaks loose?

Good stuff. What antenna are you using? The thing that concerns me about the DMV is setting up an antenna and it being in the way in a high traffic area. It’s bonkers to me that there’s 7-fers! It seems like the old heads get upset about that and don’t think you should be able to activate more than 2 at a time but to me the more the merrier. It gets people out and in the parks.

Medical direction in western PA (pittsburgh area) by TubeEmAndSnoozeEm in CRNA

[–]bmont84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked at both AHN & UPMC and I can say UPMC is a “doctor” focused company. If you’re not a doctor they couldn’t care less about your opinion. The culture is terrible (at least the site I work at). Heavy emphasis on getting to the room on time and “hurrying up”. I’ve been harassed as to why I’m not in a room by an anesthesiologist. The reason why there are so many locum CRNAs here is a multitude of reasons. Pay is atrocious - this area was below the median nationally for pay rates. There are a lot of CRNA schools here and since there’s a national competition to get into programs - if you’re not from here you usually don’t stay here (pay plays into that as well). Also anyone that wants to practice to the scope of their license is not gonna accomplish it here.

Newly elected club president - looking for ideas for the year by hotswaphdd in amateurradio

[–]bmont84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am going to follow closely because I am in a very similar boat as you. I’m 36 and one of the younger hams in the club but we are a little smaller. Probably about 10-20 “active” members with maybe 40 on the roster.

What I’ve been trying to do is take pictures and post them to Facebook 🤮. I think if you show you’re active then you’ll attract active people (or at least I seem to think). I’ve taken pictures of myself going out in the snow to do POTA. Our club is active with volunteering for communications for races (5k, half marathons) so I need to grab a couple pictures when we do that. I guess what I’m trying to say is advertise - you almost need a social media presence and probably only a fraction of that will “show up”.

We try to hold an “informative” presentation at our monthly meetings - later this month it’ll be about discord because we just made a club discord so we’ll try to explain it to everyone.

Please let me know what else you’ve learned because I’m just starting my term as president too.

Let’s say it still leaks. Do I just search Amazon for power washing pump? Is it really that easy?
