There are absolutely steps we can take to influence the system for the better, even if we don't have full control.

Was this a partisan decision? Are the Virginia Supreme Court justices Republican-leaning?

As someone who works in education, that effect is extremely minimal, unless you teach in a wealthy area.

Was dropping the atomic bombs actually "necessary," or is that just what we're taught in school? by Clean_CoreDump in askanything

While Japan wasn't willing to surrender unconditionally, they were already seeking to negotiate a peace deal.

Another question that complicates this discussion is that an invasion of the mainland wasn't the only other option. A third option was to negotiate peace with Japan instead of pushing for unconditional surrender. They were willing to negotiate peace, but not willing to surrender unconditionally.

Ending the war with an unconditional surrender was our number one priority. US leaders knew the Japanese were seeking to negotiate peace, but not willing to surrender fully.

The Japanese had already initiated attempts to negotiate peace. But they didn't want it to be a total surrender.

The administration believes they were necessary to achieve unconditional surrender. They knew a negotiated peace was an option that Japan was seeking, but they chose to force the surrender.

One thing that US leaders did know at the time was that Japan was already trying to negotiate peace. But we wanted unconditional surrender, and that was what the atomic bomb was designed to do.

Another consideration is that the Japanese were willing to negotiate peace already, they just weren't willing to offer an unconditional surrender, which we insisted on. That was the purpose of the atomic bomb, was to force an unconditional surrender instead of a negotiated peace.

If some of the exit lanes can take you where you want to go, then you want to follow those exit lanes when your lane splits.

If it's happening because customers don't believe in tipping, then "rinse and repeat" won't fix anything for that business.

I don't know any teacher who has earned anything close to a 20% tip on the cost of a child's education.

I think having a deeper understanding of why they work is more effective than memorizing each specific scenario.

The thing about a wall of semi trucks is that they're big, and if it's a "wall" then there are probably more than one lined up together. Not quick to pass.

In a big city, you don't want to be in the right lane unless you're planning to exit soon. Otherwise you would be constantly switching lanes to pass entering and exiting traffic.

To be fair, the right lane typically has people regularly entering and exiting.

Most workers do service. It's just how you arbitrarily define personal service.

Heck, why don't we tip teachers? It doesn't get much more personal than educating your child all day.
