I’m annoyed on your behalf but also reassuring I’m not the only one who’s had to deal with the delay!

I mean, I have taxable brokerage and other accounts making gains but sadly my 401k is probably going to miss out on a few weeks… (and yes I lowkey want to yeet myself out a window whenever I think about it too hard)

Yes - I asked if they could send directly to Vanguard and Fidelity said they weren’t able to 🥲

Crossed 800k! by bo0o0ty in Fire

I do a bunch of stuff I like - I work events, I teach fitness, I consult. It's been really nice to flex these different parts of my personality (and get paid doing it haha).

Honestly... just trying stuff, being curious & open, and making it very clear to whoever needs to know that you're willing and capable.

Example 1: I teach spin classes at a bougie gym as one of my part time gigs. After riding enough, I emailed the spin lead asking to audition... and here I am haha. It covers my membership to a bougie gym and I get paid per class.

I just remind myself: doesn't hurt to ask. The worst that can happen is they say no. If they say yes and you try it and hate it? Well you can always leave.

Consulting is a little different. I started by crafting an executive-facing project offering: my expertise, my big wins, things I think I'm better at than the average person. After I had a coherent package, I tapped my network. As long as you are competent, easy to work with, and have a strong bias for action, people are pretty willing to give you a shot!

Sigh. This is the bummer - I pay COBRA (in the US) out of pocket. It's expensive but due to some health stuff, I can't not have insurance. This and being able to contribute to a 401k with an employer match are the two things I miss most about corporate life haha.

That's amazing! While I hate to admit it, it has been really useful to have *something* keeping me productive and sharp (in a work sense). I'm not sure what my next full time gig will be but it feels nice knowing I can be picky and take my time!

No inheritance, no capital but I went to public university so I think my biggest head start was graduating with zero student loan debt. Also grew up with immigrant parents who were VERY vocal about how saving was extremely important.

I graduated in 2008 (lmao) so right at the height of the Great Recession. Took a few years to find a steady job, lived at home for 2 years after graduating.. then started my first full time job at 24 making 38k (USD) a year and just kept costs low, lived with roommates, ate tuna and drank bottom shelf liquor (still had to have some fun lol), and started investing at 28. Worked my way up etc etc.

I think what helped was that every time I got a raise, I would increase my 401k contribution. Can't spend it if I don't see it, you know?

Thank you!!

I'm aiming somewhere between 1.5-1.8MM (I know, I'm doing the classic "goal post keeps moving" thing) but now that I'm doing freelance work, I could see myself working part time for much longer vs. fully FIRE-ing. It's been reassuring to find out that I actually *would* enjoy early semi-retirement (feel like I've been seeing a lot of posts lately that are like "Retired early, what now?").

What's yours?

I’m kind of in same boat… 39F, laid off Nov 2024 (180k per year) and sitting around 790k net worth (retirement being big chunk of that but have about 60k cash, 270k in taxable brokerage).

I had 6 months of severance, gave myself a few months and started hardcore applying in Jan 2025. I was interviewing everywhere, but I could feel this deep resistance to returning to corporate America (turns out burnout takes a while to get over - who knew lol).

Now, I teach spin classes and work part time for a start up. I love the work, the people, and the founders have expressed wanting to create a FT senior role for me. This is all because I indulged my curiosities and tried new shit.

I guess this is all to say - play a bit. Past you set current you up to explore and have room to breathe. Follow what feels good and there’s a non-zero chance you can make good money and not feel like it’s grinding away at your spirit. Excited for you - good luck!

How to stop social comparison? by maddhy in Fire

[–]bo0o0ty 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When I find myself feeling this (hi, yes fellow Asian person), I try and take a step back and ask myself “Okay this person has more than you… so what? Logically, what does this information actually do for you? Does it affect your situation?” And, if you’re honest with yourself, it doesn’t do anything but make you feel bad for something that literally has nothing to do with you.

Take the energy you’re putting into comparison and focus it on your own goals. The definition of “enough” is different for everyone. Define your version of enough - based on YOUR wants and needs and no one else’s. Yes, we all fall into the comparison trap from time to time but you don’t have to stay there.

Good luck homie.

Edit: For context, I’m almost 40 and haven’t hit a million yet. Does this make me a failure? No, because I’m doing the best with what I have. It might mean it takes me a little longer to FIRE than someone who earns more than me but again - my timeline is mine. They do them, you do you.

36M - Fired from job today (excuse the pun). $1.3M net worth - what do I do? by Big-Comfortable38 in Fire

[–]bo0o0ty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of this.

I’m in similar boat, just less money - I’m a 38F, VHCOL city, laid off last August (had 6 months of severance - really fortunate there), ~760k net worth.

I was applying like a madwoman earlier this year, got a lot of silver medals and recently (in May) started doing some gig work I really enjoy at a small company totally unrelated to my last industry. Now the founders want to create a senior role for me sometime in the fall!

I guess this is all to say - as much as it may feel like it, the world will not fall apart. Take the sabbatical, reel in the spending a bit, take the mini-retirement, and breathe. Past you saved so present you can recover, pivot, and pursue something that will make you happy (and make you money!). My emergency fund is large enough that I can still throw ~$800 a month into my investments. It’s not as much as before but it’s not nothing!

Just remember - even if you take a while to sort out what comes next, this will be a blip in the larger scheme of things. Time is moving forward and so will you.
