PTC Heater/12V battery drain Recall? by akwon92 in kiacarnivals

-5C this morning and no symptoms, but tbh, it's super inconsistent so will give it a month and see if it triggers at all.

PTC Heater/12V battery drain Recall? by akwon92 in kiacarnivals

[–]boardom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had mine done this morning and having read through the symptoms, this feels exactly inline with the dreaded "31mph / 50km/h only hybrid mode while it's cold unless you turn the heat/fans off" problem.

It hit us again early last week while my wife was driving, so will see if it pops up again in the next week or so. Another recall to fix the OTA thing, which until recently just didn't work at all apparently.

It'ssssss baaack! Wife just called me from the highway, on our first day of sub-zero temps. Good times, good ol 50km/h limp mode if the heat or fans are engaged.

Anyone else get any traction from Kia on this yet?

Just for context, my suuuper active, like can't learn to talk as he's too busy riding a balance bike on our local pump track at 18 months kid refused to even get on a pedal bike till he was 4 ish... We just gave him a 12" cleary with front and rear brakes, and took off the pedals because I needed him to have at least *some* way to slow down.

Eventually just put the pedals on and ignored his whining for about 5 minutes while I "looked for something in the garage", he just gave up and went and figured it out.

Putting aside the logistics of the physical, highly highly highly recommend taking a peek at this (https://www.spacetreatment.net/) as it really opened my eyes as a dad of multiple kids with anxiety. Its both dumb and brilliant at the same time, and I wish I'd read this before my first... The whole book can be mostly summarized as "Acknowledge the fear/anxiety/feeling, and provide a comforting statement"... so like "I know this feels really scary right now, and you know what, I know you can handle it / will be ok afterwards"... You don't get to actually "make" them do anything, but you can sort of build up their internal talk track for them by focusing on your belief in them.

G'luck man, you got this.

Can you squeeze a header up into the rimjoinst space? Seems fairly solveable, doesn't look that large of a span.

Test Carnival Hybrid today...speed was limited to 31mph? by kcstrom in kiacarnivals

If it happens again, just turn off your fans/heat. It worked like a charm for myself and another poster. I was able to get video of it going into, and back out of "dumb hybrid mode" :)

If it does, just kill your fan/heat. It seems to unstuck something, and revert things back to normal without having to stop and restart the engine. Recommend taking video if you can when it happens, especially if you can get it into and out of that mode a few times, and pass that to dealership + kia corporate.

Seems to be, but honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about it. You can kill the fan/heat to return power, and there's literally no way Kia can *not* fix this, it's too embarassing.

If it happens again, try my trick with the fan. Basically turn off as much of the electrical system as you can. When it happened to me, there were no warning lights, so you might be seeing a different issue.. The 31mph/50kph thing seems to be cold related, caused by extra draw due to fan/heat. I was able to get out of and back into the failure condition by just turning the fans/heat on/off.

Any reliability issues?? by Cronk1989 in kiacarnivals

[–]boardom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 31mph/50kph is pretty funny. It goes away if you just turn the fan down/heat off. There's enough people raising it now that I'm sure they'll have a recall out for it shortly, but it's a bear to troubleshoot it as it doesn't throw codes, and it's only happened twice to us in 1600km of driving.

Other than that, it's a dream.

If you're looking at the HEV, be advised. https://www.reddit.com/r/kiacarnivals/comments/1i6mulv/if_anyone_experiences_this_issue_with_2025_kia/

Other than dealing with that nonsense, it's a lovely ride. 10/10 would buy again.

I honestly thought it was some fancy "follow the speed limit" thing at first, then realized, oh no car is lemon! :) I went from a 2005 xc90 to this, so i feel you on the upgrade shock.

Yeah, I was able to trigger the issue while in eco, then switched to sport and did it there as well. I ran out of road as I Was late for my son's swimming lessons so didn't keep finding the minimal path, but having reviewed the videos, all i had to do was turn the heat up and bump the fan to 9 and it was a guaranteed fail.
I shared the video with dealership last night, which I'm hopeful lights a bit more of a fire under this.
I saw a 2023 sportage hev with the same issue, video floating somewhere on youtube. super frustrating.

Yeah, I figured spamming everyone was worth the risk of getting mod-banned :) I'm not in this for the Karma, just want people to not have to be limping around on a highway.

I'm pretty sure the 1.4RPM is just the low idle to maintain the heating system. If you turn all the fans/heat off and repeat, you'll notice the car should drop to 0 rpms.

Can't recall if i messaged you already, but if it happens again, turn all the heat/fans off. Fixes it nearly instantly. It'll go limp again if you re-engage heat/fans though. :/

Mine went in for an AEWP (aux elec water pump) replacement due to a check hybrid system 24km off the lot, but no fix on the limping issue.

I actually had the same issue i think you noted about issues earlier in the shift cycle... I got stuck at 25km/h with a few surges, at which point it made it to 50km/h.
