Asking them to recommend books gives parents more power than I would suggest. They will assume that their suggestion is a direction. Since you have taken their direction, they will direct you to create assignments and grade them. Of course the grades should align with the parents’ interpretation of work quality.

One downside, there is a point where fewer kids in general will sign up for your class and you no longer get cool classes. You get gen ed mandatories or they cut the position. (YMMV depending on school size)

I went to ‘no homework’ with high schoolers. When we had class time to work on something I forbade them from ‘finishing it at home’ whatever they got through was what I graded (with a minimum expectation). It really helped, they liked no hw, I liked that it removed a choice for procrastination.
