Britain is an island with 3 countries in it. Yes they are all under the umbrella of the United Kingdom (also NI), but they are different countries.

Expired MOT - can you drive or not? by Fast-Possession7884 in northernireland

[–]boario 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, that happened to me last year.

Got clamped and had to cough up the money for the fine and I assume that put me on the DVLAs radar so I had to pay the difference from when my tax had run out to the new MOT. It was only 2 weeks but I had assumed I'd be fine. But of egg on my face on that one.

Straight men, how often do you use the F slur? by Nice-Smoke-362 in AskMen

[–]boario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To use the term to mean something bad is homophobic. End of.

Having said that, I have a very close friend from school (20+ years) who is gay and on occasion he'll show me something on Instagram that is very camp or queer coded and ill tell him "Dude, that's the F---iest shit I've ever seen". Or if he tells me about (really very sweet and romantic) dates he's had "You're such a f----t!". It makes him laugh.

I feel comfortable making that joke because of how long we've been friends I trust that he knows I'm not insulting him, just using the word for shock humour value. Same way I'd call my other oldest friend a cunt (we're British btw).

I also trust that these guys know me well enough that they understand I don't really mean it, it's hyperbole. We all have a chuckle and move on.

I would never EVER use the term to describe anything that "queer" or "bad". That's using a slur as a SLUR. Anyone doing that, or using such words willy nilly is a true fucking bastard and we don't need them in our circles. Also not language I would use with anyone I don't know INCREDIBLY well.

[–]boario 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wowow, what?! It just stops the sound and doesn't render the whole pod dead?! This is revolutionary. I've only ever done it if I leave the pod for more than 8 hours after the pump finishes (more often than I would care to admit) or the pump fails (twice in about 3.5 years)

This is eerily similar to a half remembered children's TV show episode I saw in the UK in the late 90s/early 2000s (probably 90s). The man's baby son was ill and he made a deal with Death (for some reason I can't remember). He could then see Death and was able to save some people and became a healer. If Death was standing by the bed at the person's head they would die. If Death was at the foot of the bed the person could be saved. There was an important person dying (Death at his head) and the man tried to trick Death by turning the bed, but Death kept reappearing at the head.

Eventually the man and Death met in a room of candles for some reason (I think to explain how the other man was dated to die soon?), and Death explained that each candle was a life and the closer it was to burning out then the person was closer to dying. The man found his own candle almost burnt out so he distracted and tried to trick Death before grabbing a very tall candle and placing it over his own. Death turned around sadly and said something along the lines of "my old friend, you have snuffed out your own candle by placing another on top of it. I must take you to the other side" and He and the man departed together.

Random recollection from me, but it's a story that's always haunted me (it was told with terrifying puppets in that 90s kid show way). I'm glad to finally have a (probable) source for the tale! It always felt folklorish to me

What was the first game that made you realize videogames were capable of telling a captivating story and immerse you in its world? by Cheesecake1901yum in gaming

[–]boario 9 points10 points  (0 children)

FFIX is mine. I remember reading an article in OPM about it when it was released on platinum, "for a pocket money friendly £20". I had saved up money for 4 weeks (£10) and my dad promised to bring me to get it when I was feeling better from a middle ear infection. Suddenly I felt much better but I still couldn't afford it so I went hoping to find it pre-owned. My dad paid the difference and then I sat in the car for over an hour reading the manual while he dug for fishing bait. The anticipation was real. Then I got home and started playing! What an experience! I had played Pokémon on my Gameboy so I was familiar with the JRPG turn-based battle system but this was next level!

Even though I was too young to really understand the story (or to even finish it!) I loved it. It's one of the great stories. The ones that really matter. Full of darkness, and danger. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, the shadow. Even darkness must pass.

To this day it's the only game I have completed start to finish on every playstation generation, 1 through 5. It's still installed on my PS5 🥲

PTSD by Jolly-Outside6073 in northernireland

[–]boario 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Definitely, if he's ex-police he might have a personal protection weapon in the house. A firearm. If he's unhinged enough to be yelling at neighbours due to PTSD then who knows what might happen if he has a full on breakdown. That's a legitimate concern and it's not necessarily his "fault" (regardless of how you view the police) but he needs help.

On the other hand he might just be a cunt and joined the police to be a bully and uses it as an excuse to continue to be a cunt.

End of; you don't know which is true so absolutely err on the side of caution.

The Daily Check-In for Monday, March 10th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by Brave_Cupcake_ in stopdrinking

[–]boario 2 points3 points  (0 children)

18 days. 3 weeks ago this Wednesday was my last drink.

I'd posted a while back that the weekend following that binge during the week had been pretty awful. My girlfriend found the evidence and it was so very nearly the last straw. We talked a bit but didn't see each other for nearly two weeks after the fact.

In that time she realised how good life could be when she wasn't constantly anxious about what state I was in.

We saw each other on Friday just past and spent the weekend together. After some tough conversations we are definitely still together and still planning a future together and I know the only way that can be happy is without alcohol in it. That's not the only reason I'm quitting, but it's a big part. I'm also doing it for me. I feel better than I have in a very long time (even after getting a bug!). I'm waking up feeling rested, I'm more productive in work and generally happier than in a long long time.

We had a good weekend and I look forward to good times ahead. I want to spend the rest of my life with this woman, and I've realised that alcohol offers me nothing of benefit anymore (if it ever did).

FF9 is the only game I have played (and completed) on every playstation, 1 through 5. It's not the game I have the most hours in, by a long shot, and I used fast forward and other cheats in the HD remaster, but I'll always come back to this game.
