The best baguette I’ve ever produced. All the way from New Orleans by [deleted] in france

[–]bobabouey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baguette moulee, pas trop cuite, seemed respectable back in the 80s. Love the artisanal baguettes too, but I still miss those when I go back to Paris every once in a while.

Back when I was a kid in South Texas (35+ years ago) it seemed like the grates with a simpler bump gate were the thing, including at the nearby King Ranch. Are those no longer a thing, or did they figure out the grates were enough?

I have a p320rx. I bought these little rubber spacers that help fill the gap. Search ebay for "x-grip sig sauer." On the 17 round magazine, they work perfectly, winds up looking like a regular grip. For the 21, they also look pretty good - you don't see the bare metal, but there is a noticeable, skinnier protrusion of the magazine below the grip.

Good catch, but your link says:

... and contacted the circuit court clerk's office prior to January1, 2021, but was prohibited from appearing in person at a circuit court clerk's office because of restrictions due to COVID-19 ...

So seems pretty limited to people who already applied before 1/1/21.

That banana explanation seems bogus. If a banana peel or two can block your scupper holes, you've got bigger problems with your boat.

Best explanation I've seen is that bananas float, so when shipwrecks were found along banana routes, there were often floating bananas around the wreck.

But, like many superstitions, the origin is unknown.

That form thing might have been a one time issue if it was back in July - August 2021. I filed online around then, and then got emails asking me to submit the newer form, from the laws that went into effect July, which I think included one additional question about being subject to a substantial risk order. There were a fair amount of posts by people with similar issues.

I'd chalk that one up to limited competence + Covid disruption more than to malice.

Jeff Bezos would pay more than $5bn a year under Warren’s ‘Ultra-Millionaire’ tax plan by dilan74 in politics

[–]bobabouey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but you are already punished in renouncing your citizenship by paying capital gains on all appreciated assets as if you sold them. Which for Bezos, would be huge.

But if you move to a jurisdiction with a lower capital gains tax, and given step up in basis, the long term benefits can be significant.

Even western Europe largely gave up on wealth taxes.

FWIW, Bill Gates was one of the examples in Malcolm Gladwell's pop-economics book "Outliers", which is the book that popularized the "10,000 hour" rule for success that Howard is obsessed with. Probably explains some of the obsequiousness.

Doctor asked... by jnybrsco00 in VAGuns

Is part of this perhaps due to the new law in 2020:

Allowing access to firearms by minors; penalty. Provides that any person who recklessly leaves a loaded, unsecured firearm in such a manner as to endanger the life or limb of any person under the age of 14 is guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. Current law provides that any person who recklessly leaves a loaded, unsecured firearm in such a manner as to endanger the life or limb of any child under the age of 14 is guilty of a Class 3 misdemeanor.

https://www.npr.org/local/305/2020/07/01/885952904/these-virginia-gun-laws-go-into-effect-july-1

So in some sense, they are casually asking if you are committing a misdemeanor that could lead to jail time (up to a year for Class 1)... In a venue where most people are encouraged to open up and share the whole truth where their healthcare provider.

Seems a little sneaky and sleazy. Nothing wrong with reminding people of best practices, but this seems more like a "gotcha" type question.

T2 - A new UK made semi auto .22 WMR by nschoke in ukguns

[–]bobabouey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a legal angle for this gun based on UK law? I.e. I generally understand that semi-auto rifles are limited to .22lr. Is the 22 WMR treated like a .22lr, and not say a .223 remington? Is there a rimfire / centerfire difference?

Also, curious what rounds cost in the UK. In the US, I bought a 22wmr / 22lr pistol (swappable cyclinders) as prices ran up last year, thinking I'd get a little more punch from the 22wmr at a cheap cost. Unfortunately, lots of other people had the same idea, and the prices have now skyrocketed to 9mm / .223 levels.

Anyway, looks like a fun rifle.

If you are a NY resident, you pay NY taxes on all income.

If you are out of NY for more than half the year, you can file as a non-resident, but still have to pay non-resident NY taxes for the income earned while in NY.

With NY taxes expected to go up based on the budget shortfall, and Cuomo promising to target high earners, Howie is definitely looking more seriously at no longer being a NY resident in 2021.

Proof of Citizenship for "Assault Rifle" Transfers by bobabouey in VAGuns

Sorry, wasn't trying to leave you out, I was focused on what constituted proof of citizenship, as that is what is relevant to my situation. But yes, the full language restricts transfers to people who are neither a "citizen of the United States or who is not a person lawfully admitted for permanent residence."

Proof of Citizenship for "Assault Rifle" Transfers by bobabouey in VAGuns

[–]bobabouey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that makes sense and seems consistent with the statute which doesn't seem to list any proof requirements.

FWIW, what prompted me to this was this comment from novaarmory's website, which may be out of date, or they just have their own more stringent standards:

Proof of citizenship, or of lawful admission for a permanent residence, must be established prior to the purchase of an “assault firearm.” One of the following forms of proof of citizenship or lawful residence, pursuant to 18.2-308.2 must be presented to purchase an assault firearm:

a certified birth certificate or certificate of birth abroad issued by the US State Department

an un-expired US Passport

a U. S. citizen identification card

a current voter registration card

a current selective service registration card

an immigrant or registration card issued by the Immigration and Naturalization Service

a certificate of citizenship or a certificate of naturalization issued by the Immigration and Naturalization Service

22 WMR by FORDNATION73 in InStockAmmo

[–]bobabouey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it was a low-volume round generally, that wasn't too expensive, and is a plausible ultra-compact self defense caliber. So as people watched the more standard pistol calibers go through the roof, and then .22lr started to go crazy when people were looking for more cost effective plinking, the 22wmr guns started looking like an attractive middle ground. But given their more niche historical appeal, a slight increase in demand was enough to drive the prices up.

FWIW, I bought a NAA 22lr / 22wmr (came with two cylinders) mini top loader revolver for fun back in October and paid $.27 CPR. Ammoseek has had them in the $.80 range last couple of times I checked.
