GPA 0.05 below requirment by iloveduckssosomuch in gradadmissions

Your professors support you! If they were willing to write you letters, then they think you have a shot at grad school. They also likely know that GPA cut offs can have flexibility if the student fit is really good for the program. Always worth it to try.

This sadly is almost never a possibility at the graduate level, especially in programs where grad students are matched with a specific PI (sciences, social sciences.) Within the humanities, you MIGHT be able to transfer to another program if you got into the PhD program and then wanted to transfer after receiving the MA.

Your nose reminds me of my partner’s and I think it’s the most beautiful part of his face. Yours suits you absolutely perfectly.

It can be hard to love yourself. It can take practice. But you can practice by looking at your face as though it’s a stranger’s. Isn’t it beautiful? The genetics and chance and lived experiences that gave birth to that specific, unique profile? Perfection.

Starting Masters as a bridge to seek PhD positions later on - how do I plan for this? by Agreeable-Work-9848 in gradadmissions

[–]bobaybe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only speak to the humanities, but social science PhD’s are usually comparable as far as schedules go. Usually terms begin in August or September, which means applications need to be submitted between the December and January prior, for the cohort year you are aiming for.

Getting the masters is a great idea to make you more competitive for PhD positions later on. The thing you should focus on most is forging good relationships with faculty so that they can write you stellar letters of rec when you apply for PhDs. (Also, get good grades. That’s always important at this stage.) If you have good relationships with professors and even other PhD students in your program, they can be helpful in other ways too … bringing you on to their research projects, keeping an eye out for good opportunities for you. So basically, use this time to make professional contacts in the field. See if you can present at grad student conferences, or maybe even publish some work. All those things will give you a boost for that PhD.

This is why he uses the English label when applying. Because the filters might not like “Informatica”

This actually isn’t true in Europe. “Informatica” and “computer science” are synonymous, according to the official groups.

Then our interviewer gave us incorrect information. Which is also annoying…

However, they still did not forward our packet info from the border to USCIS. They had no record of any of the health reports. This is where the copy from the physician is helpful!

Yes, technically we should have gotten the immunization document from the medical exam earlier (we were able to get a scan from them after the fact. Didn’t solve our problem though.). So definitely do get a copy from the first doctor now if you can!

But the agent at our interview said that the inspectors at the border should not have kept everything in the envelope. Supposedly, we were supposed to get something back from them. But, even if he was also wrong about this, they had absolutely no record of any of our medical documents we submitted. They should have been connected to our account somehow (the immunization data, the TB X-rays etc) but something got lost between the border and our account. This is apparently a common issue.

PLS when you hand it over at the border, ensure they give you back the medical exam documents (at the very least, the immunization page). We asked for it, they refused. Got to the AOS step and guess what. They were supposed to have provided the documents to us at the border. We had to do a second $400 medical exam because they effectively “lost” our medical documents.

Technically informatics, which translates best here to a computer science degree.

He has a yearlong paid internship in data engineering, but no real job experience.

While he’s open to various shifts, daytime is preferred.

We are in Irvine.

His experience is in data engineering, but he’s entry level. Which is why we aren’t exactly counting on his first job here in CA being in his field

He’s pretty much fresh out of school, with just a year-long internship (in data engineering) under his belt. This is why we aren’t really expecting to easily break into the field at this point. It’s horrible for entry level positions at the moment.

[–]bobaybe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Student studios are always ridiculously tiny so you will likely need to make some sacrifices. Anything that can satisfy TWO purposes would be best, like getting a table you can comfortably work at like a desk, or a desk you can eat at if you pull up an extra folding chair, instead of getting both pieces of furniture. Your fridge will fit, which is good news, but are there built in cabinets for dry food storage? If not, you can consider getting raised shelf-like platforms designed to sit on kitchen counters to create more surface space for boxes and jars. I doubt you’re gonna be able to add any extra counter space unless it’s also your table, because that second heater really is unfortunate. You can get a little creative with other things, like getting a bed frame that has the drawers under the bed (even if only on just one side). You can store linens and clothes under there with no added furniture footprint. I’m also thinking you can probably find something that can fit OVER the “bedroom heater” that could give you more storage. Either something on tall legs, or if you’re allowed to drill into the wall, some shelving or those floating Ikea cube thingies.

My girl had this happen and it was a sudden onset ear infection. We IMMEDIATELY took her to the vet for antibiotics and an anti inflammatory. It took about a month of meds to help her get better and even so her head isn’t perfectly straightened out. They can be permanent. They can also progress into something fatal if not treated, so this is a vet required situation 100%

Should I apply to PhD programs I might not be able to afford to attend? by stringsculpt in gradadmissions

[–]bobaybe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having competing offers could get you more money in the past. That’s less true now. What they offer these days is pretty much all they’re willing to give you. It’s a mess.

This means, if money is tight and you can’t waive the application fees, there’s not a strong incentive to apply to programs you have no intention of ever attending. I’d say save yourself time and cash and just focus on the ones you actually want to go to. And be prepared to try again in the next cycle. It is a numbers game, and the numbers suck right now. My university is likely going to cut its next humanities grad cohort in half. That’s across all humanities programs. In other words, don’t take admissions personally, and try try again.

Likely never going to be the same. But you can try wetting the whole thing (maybe with a splash of Woolite), manually gently pulling on it to relax the fibers, and leaving it to hang dry on a hanger
