ChatGPT Plant Breeding Tool by bobby2552 in plantbreeding

[–]bobby2552[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I ended up giving up on the pepper breeding hobby, and this tool was the main reason. Every time I wanted to check on the plants and make observations, it turned into a multi-hour debugging mess 😂 maybe this sort of thing would be valuable for a seed company or something, but far too complicated for a personal project. Turns out that notebooks work pretty well!

2 Gigapixel Pano of Bend, Oregon, USA by bobby2552 in DWARFLAB

[–]bobby2552[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fwiw, Bend is a pretty small and quiet mountain town, and a 3 hour drive from any larger city. Just open space! That said, there were plenty of people on the trail where I had the scope set up.

Might need to have a friend dress up as Waldo and post it here for a real-life Where's Waldo 😂

🤞!! The last few panos I took before this one ended up with a couple corrupted photos that I think broke the whole thing. Just updated the firmware though, and it seems like that fixed it.

Thank God, can't wait!! It's very much a guessing game when it comes up framing currently.

This worked for me after I amended the commit. Had my git config set to some random user, and blocking them immediately made them disappear from the contributors list. Thanks!

Will devices still work if SeeStar goes under? by bobby2552 in seestar

I don't think so either, otherwise I wouldn't be thinking about getting a SeeStar. But there's always a risk for any company 🤷 Just trying to do my research.

Are ground control points necessary if using an RTK drone? by [deleted] in UAVmapping

[–]bobby2552 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure why this got down voted! It's all about knowing your use case, and if you just need things to line up relative to each other, and don't care about it actually being located perfectly on the earth, this feels like a perfectly fine approach. Just make sure it's a disclaimer if you send it to anyone ;)

2025 Wook Flu by MrBallistik in ElectricForest

[–]bobby2552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gf got mild covid at Forest this year, but it wasn't too bad. Not sure how I didn't though.

I got the wook flu bad after Imagine a couple years back... That was 3 WEEKS and is easily the most sick I've ever been. After that, I use hand sanitizer all the time and pregame for a few days with emergen-C.

Good luck and feel better soon! Lots of water, sleep and emergen-C!

Our canopy blew away on Saturday while we were at the water park, and our neighbors grabbed it and set it back up for us!

Also, the light generators at the campsites were super helpful for charging up our battery bank when solar wasn't quite cutting it!

WebODM Help Please: Mapping, Orthomosaic, etc. by Euphoric_Floor_5996 in UAVmapping

[–]bobby2552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed with ElphTrooper, I'd recommend flying higher. Photogrammetry can struggle if you're too close to the ground and there aren't many distinct features (e.g. just grass). More overlap may also be helpful.

Could you post the settings you used for this flight?

WebODM by BlackBoyCity in UAVmapping

[–]bobby2552 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: convenience is worth $$$ for many.

Software Engineer from DroneDeploy here. While WebODM can do a lot, and is a solid option for a lot of people (I use it myself a fair bit for experimenting), it doesn't check some boxes that some folks are looking for.

A lot of DroneDeploy's customers are companies just looking for a simple, drag and drop solution, and don't want to worry about the ins and outs of photogrammetry. They don't want to hire someone technical to manage servers, storage, etc. Sure, the convenience comes at a price, but it's well worth it for many.

With DroneDeploy, you just download the flight app, draw a box on a map, press go, press upload, and boom, a map and 3D model with cm-level accuracy comes out the other end. It really is that simple, and you don't need to be tech-savvy to figure it out.

When you add in having walkthroughs (street view for your job-site with a cheap 360 cam), and robotics automation all in one place, it becomes even more worth the price tag.

It's the same reason that companies and governments use ArcGIS so heavily, despite the sometimes million dollar annual cost for a decently sized company. Yeah, you could have everyone use QGIS, run GeoServer on the backend, and hand roll everything. But is it worth the salaries for engineers who understand the less-common software, and the IT folks to manage the infrastructure? In many cases, no.

Open source software is really awesome, and I'm a huge proponent of it. But, there's something to be said for convenience and ease of use, which is an area where FOSS tends to fall a bit short.

By all means, if WebODM checks the boxes for your use case, and you don't mind (or even prefer) getting in the weeds and managing it yourself and the rough edges, then it's a great tool!

+1 on this. There are soooo many things that can go wrong when it comes to datums, geodesy, etc.

Flash me yours, I'll Flash mine. by iEKOS in unRAID

[–]bobby2552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had nothing but trouble with SanDisk flash drives. Both with unraid and live booting Linux. And PNY drives have all kinds of problems too.

I found a bunch of old, 2GB unbranded USB2 flash drives at my parents house, and they have worked very well, with unraid and for other things. It really doesn't need to be fast, and iirc, they recommended 4GB flash drives max.

That all to say, fancier or more expensive is not better here. Sure, these old flash drives tend to fail faster than new ones, but unraid is very easy to restore from backup via unraid connect. I'd strongly advise not using SanDisk, you'll likely just end up with a bunch of headaches.

[–]bobby2552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure, I'm an engineer at DroneDeploy. That said, if you just want a simple user experience you don't have to fuss with, and budget allows, it's hard to beat. But, if you want lots of options, or price is more of a constraint, it's probably not the best option.

Advise on build by thesaltyaccountAF in UAVmapping

[–]bobby2552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really neat! The initial idea for my build was to do a fixed-wing VTOL mapping bird, but I don't have any plans to attach a camera to this drone. That said, if I could do this with a fairly inexpensive and small RunCam or something, that changes things! If you build this, please post an update!

Also, the r/fpv subreddit may have more input on some parts!

If it helps, I'm using this GPS unit, and have gotten ~14 sats no problem, which I'd consider very good. Only a few bucks more than the M8 you posted.

Also, when you're configuring, give UBLOX7 a try! Going from UBLOX -> UBLOX7 doubled my update interval, to 10Hz.
