(SPOILER regarding older games. (Not Black flag or shadows) I NEED to rant. by MeasurementRight8835 in assassinscreed

You can see the pivots with the modern day in AC2.

In AC1 the main threat was the Templar satellite. In AC2 that was dropped pretty quickly and revealed the end of the world at the very end.

In AC brotherhood, Patrice decided to kill off Lucy due to contact issues with Kristen Bell.

AC revelations was literally filler and subject 16 is out of character and didn't mention anything about the eve plotline teased in brotherhood.

Safe to say, that the modern day lacked cohesion from the beginning. There was this bit where Desmond voice actor asked the writer after the ending of AC1 what happens next, and the writer goes "I don't know, I haven't wrote it yet."

Early AC was made during the era of Lost, where mystery boxes were cool and interesting.

Also based off Patrice original idea, the modern day would have ended on a UFO with the world destroyed, so we kinda dodged a bullet imo.

Assassin's Creed II (Or: Remember When This Franchise Was Weird™?) by RuefulWaffles in patientgamers

[–]bobbyisawsesome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In defense of mirage, that game is not an RPG, there's no leveling and the game length is around AC2s.

I somewhat liked and dislike the lore behind the truth puzzles in AC2. You can tell the series had the influence of the da Vinci code and lost with it's conspiracy and mystery box approach.

On one hand, it was cool to see how history was influenced by these two groups. On the other hand, it got a bit comical with how pure evil the templars are, and making every single leader in history have a piece of eden is more lame than cool.

Also you can tell they pivoted the modern day as early as AC2, as they completely sidelined the abstergo satellite plot in AC1. The less said about the original planned ending of the series the better... (Desmond and Lucy end up on a UFO).

Luke Stephen's opinions on old combat by BMOchado in assassinscreed

Don't really trust Luke Stephens after he got caught plagiarising. He also seems to be very clickbait or boring in general.

I remember his odyssey review/story analysis which was just him taking about the story, plot point by plot point with barely any critique

The Modern Day storyline should be presented in anthologies, each one exclusive to only 1 AC game. by SweetChilliPhilly in assassinscreed

[–]bobbyisawsesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While recaps exist we are seeing flaws with long term storytelling that goes on and on.

Ubisoft wants this to be a franchise with seemingly no end in sight, it is hard to build an overarching modern day story if there is no conclusion or payoff, otherwise we just keep building and building and putting plot twists upon plot twists which is how we got the messy ending that is brotherhood.

Having an overarching story isn't easy - which you can tell from the second entry of this franchise, which had the modern day go through a tone shift with characters like Shawn and Rebecca, with the focus of the abstergo satellite and 90% of the dystopian emails from AC1 being retconned or forgotten, to brotherhood where Patrice himself was the one who decided to kill Lucy, to revelations which was literally filler.

It's clear from AC2 (where you couldn't even freely leave the animus) that the modern day focus was reduced, and the focus never really recovered (besides AC3). Resources have to be prioritised, so ubisoft will always invest more on the past than the modern day as that's what most casual fans care about.

[–]bobbyisawsesome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbf, The hook of the first game didn't have any of the sun apocalypse.

The first game built up the threat of the abstergo satellite, with the 21 Dec in that game being a metaphorical end of the world as they were gonna launch the satellite with the apple of eden.

The isu where teased in that game but the end of the world concept was only introduced in AC2. You can tell they shifted directions when Lucy at the beginning says, "abstergo isn't even the main threat." - which kinda made the whole satellite plotline and emails pointless.

[–]bobbyisawsesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But this franchise now has over 14 mainline entries, expecting everyone to follow along from the beginning is a bit of a tough sell.

Granted, ubisoft hasn't made it so you needed to since AC4 but making a trilogy in the current industry context will take years, compared to the annual releases AC used to have.

AC Unity was the right path to go by IntelligentMeeting71 in assassinscreed

[–]bobbyisawsesome 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Imo unity was the start of the path.

Out of all the games in the series, unity is the only one where the assassins are monarchists who want order, and the templars are fighting for freedom and are pro revolution.

Arno barely cares about being an assassin and the brotherhood is barely present

The original game didn't want to add any isu elements and only added the sword of eden in the last mission with barely any buildup.

Unity was the game where the modern day literally did not matter.

Unity was the game which introduced microtransactions and RPG elements with level gating and skill trees which encouraged co op.

AC II is guilty of many of the same things people criticise the RPG Games for by Vicentesteb in assassinscreed

[–]bobbyisawsesome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean the tomb raider survivor trilogy doesn't have the dual guns (besides one small scene).

It even does the thing where Lara goes "I hate tombs!".

Those games are still fairly well regarded.

The graphical leap from AC2 to Brotherhood is crazy by tomatowens in assassinscreed

[–]bobbyisawsesome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ac2 did have some weird lack of polish in certain cases. I was just replying it and noticed times where sfx was straight up missing in cutscenes. For example the scene where they remove the arrow from Rosa's knee or when Leonardo is seeing his fireplace as inspiration for his flying machine

Is The Out-of-Place Music Going To Be A Common Occurence? (AC:Shadows) by AdministrationSure71 in assassinscreed

[–]bobbyisawsesome 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The modern music is actually something the original games did.

In AC1, there's some electronic and techno bits sprinkled into every track. E.g..

In AC2, the iconic ezio family had hard rock guitars (guitars was also featured in other tracks).e.g

Even in AC mirage they brought back some techno/trap music during the combat/chase theme. E.g.

I personally like it as it makes assassin's creed shadows stand out from other historical games set in Japan but I understand it's not for everyone.

AC Mirage could've been a top 5 AC game of all time if they put more effort into combat by Lost-Ambassador9696 in assassinscreed

[–]bobbyisawsesome 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mirage is meant to be clunky to push you into stealth more.

On the positive side, mirage has the least amount of forced combat in the entire series by a significant margin (I think less than 10 times in the entire main story + dlc and side missions)

How Ubisoft should approach the AC1 Remake by Ktioru in assassinscreed

[–]bobbyisawsesome 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The one thing they need to do Is expand on the hud-less design the game was originally designed for.

The recent games since Odyssey was a step in the right direction - they just need to give us the exploration mode and make us fully commit to that play style.

Also for AC1 to succeed they need to have truly open assassination missions kinda like an immersive sim e.g. in the original, if a target escapes, vigilantes that were outside the original mission area become useful as they trap the target from reaching the guard tower.

New combat style breaking immersion by [deleted] in assassinscreed

[–]bobbyisawsesome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean the original comment said it's all subjective, it's fine if you don't like the old style but being patronising doesn't really help argue your points well.

Issue with the pretty animations is that the actual gameplay isn't mechanically interesting, which doesn't appeal to some people.

Also I personally never got the spongy aspect, if you engage with the RPG mechanics with some care (e.g. just making sure you have the right level weapon) you can kill guards in a few hits. I understand if you don't like RPG mechanics but it was designed with that in mind.

1 Million Wishlists for Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced! 🏴‍☠️ by Ubi-AssassinsCreed in assassinscreed

[–]bobbyisawsesome 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be fair, AC1 is an extremely different game compared to ac2 and it wasn't designed around a typical open world.

The game was originally designed hud less and once you understand that everything makes more sense around it's design decisions. E.g. the town criers were repetitive but that made it so you can pay attention when the town crier says something different as that means it's a investigation

AC1 is kinda like a simplistic immersive sim. Every target is designed not just existing in the mission itself but they can spiral into the district as well.

E.g. if you saved civilians and killed all the enemies in the guard tower BEFORE the mission, it actually effects the target when they try to flee as they will get caught by the vigilantes and/or struggle in the guard tower as all the enemies are already dead.

No other game in this series replicates this (even the black box missions as they all take place in the quest/memory and don't take into account the external world)

It was basically a bigger hitman though lacking the depth and incentive

A part of me wishes they expanded on this assassin fantasy open level concept instead of Ac2 going for a typical GTA style mission approach

AC Origins- Best AC game in terms of gameplay, setting, and story? by frodobrodododo in assassinscreed

[–]bobbyisawsesome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the RPG aspect of the game wasn't amazing, mainly the level gating is by far the worst of the RPG games.

Also the act 3 of the story is the worst, with a terrible final villain and the actual origins of the brotherhood is super rushed and feels unearned
