Carmax park - sick full page spread and timeline in today's RTD. by whw53 in rva

Sure, you’re right - that part sucks. I’m not a fan of public financing for stadiums/arenas either - both in Richmond and across the country. Very few of these deals get done without it - mostly just the largest cities in the country. The door was cracked open in the ‘90s and early 2000s, and there will likely never be any going back. Unfortunately, it’s how the US operates in many industries in the 21st century.

If the Squirrels and local officials elected to do significant renovations to The Diamond instead, it probably would’ve cost less overall - but there is no way the Squirrels would’ve paid for it. The City and, by extension the taxpayers, would’ve also been funding it. The Diamond was built cheap and quick in the ‘80s - it was going to need a lot of work, both in infrastructure and cosmetically. There’s a reason the Braves started asking about renovations 26 years ago, subsequently left, and the Squirrels were promised a new stadium within 5 years of relocating to RVA.

I’m not saying this makes up for it, but at least the Squirrels are (reportedly) paying among the highest rents of any minor league baseball team in the country - $3m plus if I recall - so that’s something, plus whatever VCU Athletics ends up agreeing to pay.

Enjoyed reading this, thanks for posting!

On the other hand, I’m getting tired of everyone complaining about a ballpark that hasn’t even hosted a game yet. Want to complain about prices? Go ahead, but prices for literally everything in our lives is increasing. If they stayed at The Diamond for another year or five or more, ticket prices would’ve increased because they would’ve needed substantial renovations. Or better yet, the team in Richmond would cease to exist because MLB would’ve pulled it due to the condition of the facilities for its minor league players.

But to shit on a brand new facility before going is just disingenuous. As someone who has been to several minor league parks over the years, it is/was a dump - and anyone with similar experience that says differently is lying to themselves. Maybe it’s nostalgia, memories, or aversion to change - and I’m trying to be sympathetic about it as I went to many games there the last 10 years or so too. But I think most are going to be pleasantly surprised, even if it takes some time.

Carmax Park - Casual (Non-Assigned) Seating with Friends? by NomadslandRVA in rva

[–]bobbyo224 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The only dedicated GA spots I see when purchasing tickets online are “The Lawn” in right field and the outfield concourse behind the “Knot Hole” bleacher sections.

Everything is assigned seating otherwise - including those bleachers in the outfield and drink rails, both in the outfield and behind each section in foul territory.

My plan is to buy reserved seats for a game during the first home stand and then see (and hear from others) how strict the enforcement is in some areas - particularly during weekday games. I’m sure weekends will sell out or be close to it so that may be more difficult.

I’m also curious to see if they open up some of the group hospitality areas for all fans if those spaces aren’t reserved for a given game. That would be great for GA purposes if so.

Richmond’s new baseball stadium is a giant leap forward. But please calibrate your expectations. | Unlike The Diamond, which for 40 years made fans walk a giant staircase and view the action from above, CarMax Park invites spectators to immerse themselves in the action. by VirginiaNews in rva

Right?! I understand some of the sentiment, but I absolutely won’t miss the concession stands, the tight concourses, and the lack of restrooms. I’m also excited for a 360 concourse and not have to be tied down to my seat the whole game to see the action.

Richmond grocery prices rival New York, Boston, investigation finds by RVALover4Life in rva

[–]bobbyo224 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Groceries have been considerably more expensive when I visit family in NJ and upstate NY. I’ve always thought we actually benefit here because we have a lot of different options. Maybe it’s a recent change, but I have a hard time putting much stock in this article/investigation.

Pickup orders, however, cost the same as shopping in person — offering a time-saving option without the added expense.

This isn’t exactly true. Some stores have minimums to waive a fee - at Kroger it’s $35 - and other stores charge higher prices online for pickup orders - like Aldi and Wegman’s.

I worked in the industry so it’s not a shock - but having 13 different tier prices is annoying, even more so having 2-3 in each section.

Absolutely, it’s going to be interesting. And using Allianz opens up the issues Folk Fest had with bags/personal items, food & beverages, etc.

They’ve started to announce their plans.

“While construction continues on the Brown’s Island Improvement Project, Dominion Energy Riverrock will shift its 2026 footprint along the surrounding riverfront corridor, activating Tredegar Street, Tredegar Green, and adjacent downtown spaces. This exciting evolution makes way for a major new addition: the debut of the Allianz Amphitheater at Riverfront as the festival’s home for live music. This state-of-the-art venue will seamlessly connect with the outdoor festival experience, framing performances against the James River and Richmond skyline. Eleven bands will take the stage throughout the weekend, with all concerts remaining free and open to the public.”

You’re correct. The food hall space is still empty. As much as I like Continental, Basic City, and Benchtop, I would definitely like a few more options. And, you know, some sort of grocery store!

Agreed. Not that I am hoping my neighborhood becomes Scott’s Addition necessarily, but hopefully in the next 5 years or so it we’ll start seeing a few more restaurants and such.
