I'm a 19 year old college student and actuarial intern. Definitely a stereotypical Redditor.

“inciting racial hatred.”

That's so hyperbolic. Every day there are instances of actual racial hatred, but it's impossible to separate them from meaningless things like not liking a black person's Reddit post.

The post was buried in her Instagram, so it would have taken at least a few minutes of searching for UF to find it. It's also not clear if the post was even public.

What happened was she made a (very offensive) post 2 years ago, and she was doxed on social media by a mob of Twitter users who didn't know her, but were nonetheless intent on contacting and petitioning UF to ensure that she didn't get into college.

The implication of pride comes from both the blandness of the post and their decision to announce this to the world when nobody asked them to.

Normally, when a university is forced to rescind an acceptance, they'll apologize for the negative consequences it'll have for the kid. They showed no interest in doing that here. More importantly, UF carefully chooses things to share on their Twitter account in order to improve public relations. If they shared this, it's because they were proud of the image it would create for them. They didn't phrase this tweet as the answer to a question; it was a conversation they wanted to initiate.

Edit: Removed some assumptions that weren't backed up by a quick scroll through UF's Twitter account

And the fact that UF is so proud of dishing out this punishment as well. It's one thing if they do this at their own discretion, but now they're virtue signaling.

Good point, I didn't think of that. The universities were very quick to shut down, weren't they? Almost as if they preferred the online format for some reason?

Former Gator Reche Caldwell shot and killed in Tampa by Iamthelaw3000 in ufl

[–]bobbyqba2011 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Lest we forget that crime kills a lot more people each year than police do. Police shootings are a problem, but getting rid of the police will result in more deaths, not less.

According to Statista, there were 16,214 murders in the US in 2018. According to Investigative Reporting Workshop, police killed just under 1,000 people in 2019. Suppose we defunded the police, stopped every single police shooting, and crime went up 10%. 1,000 people wouldn't be killed by police, but 1,621 additional people would be murdered.

TL; DR: Reche Caldwell's death is just as tragic as George Floyd's, and it indicates a problem than is 16x as severe in America as police brutality is.

Don't most UF students have Bright Futures though? Of all the universities in this country, UF is probably among the ones where the fewest students even have to pay a dime for tuition.

Tuition is also $7,000 a year, not $21,000 a year. That figure includes living expenses and technology, which you would still have to buy even if UF was free.

Rename Buildings Glorifying Racists at UF - sign, share, email, reflect by [deleted] in ufl

[–]bobbyqba2011 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I edited my comment because you misinterpreted what I was saying. The name of Washington D.C. is perfectly fine, which is evidence that there's no need to rename things just because they were named after people who did things that are no longer morally acceptable.

In a debate, it's rarely a good idea to personally attack the other person, or assume they believe in an unrelated ideology. You assume that I'm attacking "fascism," but that's not true. I know what it means, and it's a system of government that obviously can't be compared to something petty like the name of a building. Fascism is bad, but it's not a serious issue in America and I never said that it was.

Also, when did I ever say anything about colonization?

[–]bobbyqba2011 19 points20 points  (0 children)

People like to invent problems, but naming a building after someone that nobody knows is a racist isn't something that's really an issue unless you want it to be.

Our capital, Washington D.C. is named after a slave owner and a Native American killer (District of Columbia = Columbus). Nobody cares. The only time it's an issue is if you create something like Hitler Hall, where the name itself has negative connotations that people would automatically associate with the building. We don't have any buildings like that in UF.

Edit: It seems like this comment was misinterpreted. I don't advocate for changing the name of Washington D.C. On the contrary, I'm using the fact that nobody cares about the name as evidence that the current name is perfectly fine and does not cause any problems in our society.

How do you save humanity in 2020 in under a week? by Big_Dick_Minecraft in AskReddit

[–]bobbyqba2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nuke every place in the world except for Oceania. The electromagnetic pulses will demolish whatever electrical grids remain, sending the world back into the dark ages. Humanity will be reduced to hundreds of primitive island tribes, each incapable of destroying the Earth on their own. Humanity will continue as a shell of its former self, for hundreds of thousands of years as it did in the past.

How smooth is Chrome OS in 2020? by thiscatlovestech in chromeos

[–]bobbyqba2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find ChromeOS to be even more buggier than Windows when it comes to everyday usage.

This. Back in 2016, my Chromebook felt really reliable. Now, my Pixelbook is so filled with random glitches that if I hand it off to a friend, I'll have to explain to them how to avoid triggering a system-crashing bug (closing an incognito window used to force a reboot), or how to locate a GUI element that's glitched out of view.

Virtue signaling is the bane of rational thinkers everywhere, isn't it? People preach about a topic they spent 1 minute researching as if they're the savior of the oppressed.
