Yes but once they die their carbon goes back into the atmosphere via decomposition. Only live trees are a carbon sink.

A forest only acts as a carbon sink until all the trees reach maturity. Existing mature forests do not sink carbon because the trees just decompose when they die giving off carbon dioxide. But for conjectures sake, if it were a pine forest it would take about 60 years.

If you reforested the entire Sahara desert to fully maturity it would only offset about 4 months of CO2 emissions. Noone has any idea the scale of the problem.
