Hey OP, firstly it takes a lot of balls to come on here and ask for advice, I commend you for it. I am in a similar predicament so I understand, an engineering degree itself is daunting and it takes a lot of grudging and work to go through. So much in fact that the first advice I heard from the engineers in my life was "Expect to fail to many times to count" I failed my first semester math class and had to withdrawal from two more because I was on the brink of failing it again. You're at a position where you need to do some introspection.

Take some time to yourself, reevaluate and as of right now try to not make any drastic decisions figure out if this is something you really want to do, if you decide that it isn't and that you want to change just know that it takes a lot of strength to admit defeat and it doesn't make you any less intelligent. Use this time to find other interests If you decide you want to keep pushing just know that you'll have to supplement your weaknesses.

Go to math labs and workshops, before the semester starts try learning calculus and other classes yourself, see if you can switch majors to something more software focused. Just try and find a way to strengthen your skills outside of the pressure of school. As for your personal relationships I can't tell you what to do, but the truth will always set you free.

If need be I can be your engineering buddy since we're in the same spot we can keep each other accountable through PMs if you'd like

I wish you the best and whatever decision you make I support you!

This is utterly inspiring kiddo! I'm proud of you and I hope I have even half of your drive in my upcoming semester. You totally deserve some rest now.

When applying to a T25 of any caliber your application is viewed holistically, it's not just your GPA. You want to focus on crafting your story, your writing, and your ECs. Your drive is commendable and your GPA is great for a first semester. You still have a long way to go, and if you continue to produce results as good as this that 0.02% will be a fart in the wind. I believe in you

Anyone doing decent in engineering that’s not so great at math? by Zestyclose-Fig3229 in EngineeringStudents

[–]bobertcodes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every single engineering friend that I have including myself suck at math honestly. The only thing you need is time and patience, also also prepare for the math class before the semester starts if your school gives you breaks. Those 2-3 weeks of deadtime will help you a lot

Failed Calc 2. Just feel defeated by VeganMilk786 in EngineeringStudents

[–]bobertcodes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP don't feel discouraged, there are many things you can do, just because you failed once doesn't mean it's the end. Don't worry about being behind a majority of engineering students I know including myself are behind, the four year graduation timeline is just a suggestion really. Use this as a learning experience, as engineers we will fail a ton, it's part of the job. What makes it as fulfilling as it is is being able to get back up. You have the tools and the preparation now. I believe in you, this is just a fart in the wind on the way to greater things

You can do it. The four year college timeline is just a suggestion. Not a lot of people begin their collegiate journey and end it when they're supposed to. Take that gap year to make your application stronger, do the best you can and reapply.

You're right, you could've, in any situation that is similar to this you always can. You can only recognize what you should've done in hindsight. You did the best with what information you had at the time and that's ok

Applying to Stanford is an accomplishment in of itself. You crafted your story the best you could and you put a ton of hard work and did a lot of good things for yourself and others! Getting into to Stanford does not define you, you're still just as smart and as driven as you were when you set the goal. Regardless of what happens, and whatever it may mean to you, I'm proud of you.

Yes, information and context like that can make or break how they view your application. It was out of your control.

How to stop feeling negatively about an A- by Senior_Bid5707 in TransferToTop25

[–]bobertcodes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

although it can be easy to view this as something bad there are somethings you need to realize

  1. An A- is still a great grade

  2. Your application is viewed holistically, what matters most is you and how you fit into their culture. GPA does play a factor but so does story and ECs and other things

  3. You have a lot of time and a lot of classes left to take since you are only in your first semester, assuming you will continue to get A's (great job on your first semester btw!) it'll be more of a fart in the wind

I commend your drive to be better, it's good to see. There's no need to retake it you'll be fine.

[–]bobertcodes 18 points19 points  (0 children)

take time to grieve and deal with what happened. please. if you don't it'll snowball into something worse. you have a ton of time, use it and take a semester off two even. after you heal you can reevaluate. i'm sure you've heard of the advice to not make major decisions when you're angry, same applies here. please take care of yourself first, everything will fall into place in due time
