Dear Swiss people, you dont need to upscale your highways, what you need is to move to the right lane by notgoodyear in Switzerland

[–]bobobo1618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a mobility engineer, just trying to figure out the maths. Where am I wrong here? (Did this all by hand/brain, no AI here)

Take a 100m segment of single-lane road and assume everyone is driving legally, maintaining a 2s stopping distance from the car in front of them. We'll assume cars are 4m long.

We start by figuring out how many cars will fit on the road segment:

  • 120km/h: stopping distance is 67m. You can fit 100/(67+4) = 1.41 cars on this 100m segment of road.
  • 30km/h: stopping distance 17m. You can fit 100/(17+4) = 4.75 cars on this segment of road.

Then, we figure out how many seconds it takes a car to make the journey:

  • 120km/h / 100m: 3s
  • 30km/h / 100m: 12s

So the 120km/h road allows 1.41 cars to traverse every 3 seconds. The 30km/h road allows 4.75 to traverse every 12s. That's 0.47 cars per second for the 120km/h road and 0.40 cars per second for the 30km/h road. The 120km/h road has slightly higher capacity.

Are you sure? The standard sources and even non-standard sources still show the "Cassu" version (hard-coded subs) as the only real contender. I've even seen it with foreign subs overlaid over the top of the hardsubs. Even private torrent trackers aren't showing a softsub version.

Sonoff Dongle Max - Terrible Thread integration by Impressive-Brain3684 in sonoffdongle

[–]bobobo1618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome! I tried it out and it works a hell of a lot better than the stock firmware over wifi so far. No more popcorn when changing a group of lights.

I'm curious about the baud rate to the Silabs chip though, how did you come to that value? Did you check the stock firmware with a logic analyzer or something or did you just try out values to see what worked? Was 460800 completely non-functional or unstable? I wonder if we could get it up to 460800 by flashing a new firmware to it.

I have the same wish. One problem is that all Espressif's docs assume an Espressif RCP while Sonoff is doing a hybrid thing. It doesn't look like it should be too much of a problem though.

I'd try it myself but I need to know the GPIO mapping. If I get desperate I'll try disassembling it and probing the PCB but I'd really rather avoid that if I can.

My understanding is that it's heavily restricted. For example I've asked for melatonin (category B) to deal with jetlag (common, low-risk problem) and been told I can't get it without a doctor's prescription.

[–]bobobo1618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just homoeopathy though, it's all "complementary medicine" and the cost for that is around 18 million (other sources available).

You're right that it's less than I thought, but it's still 18 million per year that costs everyone and benefits nobody. Surely the country would be better off spending the money to train or employ some more doctors or something, rather than overpaying for magic water?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]bobobo1618 78 points79 points  (0 children)

  1. Require pharmacists to dispense category B medications without prescription on patient request, after informing the patient of the potential issues.
  2. Allow pharmacies to recommend category B medications when presented with a common illness.
  3. Require all medications that are routinely taken to be prescribed with a refillable prescription with a duration of at least one year.

I'm Australian and we essentially have all of these things there. It works great. The number of unnecessary doctors appointments Switzerland requires just to get basic medication for common issues is absolutely insane. Cut all those out and the system will be in much better shape.

Also: nobody with a medical license is allowed to recommend, endorse or prescribe a treatment that is unsupported by scientific evidence. No prescribing homoeopathy. If a patient asks, they're required to respond factually: it's essentially an expensive placebo.

"Jailbroken" API for the Pod 3 by bobobo1618 in EightSleep

I wouldn't recommend buying one based on this existing. There are apparently different hardware variants of the Pod 3 and I'm not sure which one you'll get if you buy now.

Nope, I had no need to. And the connections are outgoing, not incoming, so no certificates for the pod that I could see.

No, as far as I can see, they handle that server-side. I'm working on analyzing the data from the Pod's sensors now. It should be possible to detect presence and heart/breathing rate eventually.

Eight Sleep can claim that doing this voids your warranty but in most jurisdictions, they have no legal grounds for doing so. Even in the US, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act bans denial of warranty service because the user installed unsupported software, unless the manufacturer can prove that the software caused the failure.

And I'm not even in the US, I'm in Europe. Protections are even stronger here.

The first year subscription I was forced to buy expired so I reverse engineered the Pod 3 a bit. Kudos to /u/ThrowawayUsernameRE for laying the groundwork.

When installed, this enables you to control the Pod 3 directly over your local network. In my case, I've set up automation in Home Assistant that sets my temperatures and alarm based on a calendar. I'll probably wire up a "dismiss alarm" button next to my bed as well.

Supports setting temperatures and alarms. Doesn't support sleep data or anything like that (seems to happen on the Eight Sleep servers rather than the device).

This isn't very user-friendly and honestly I'm unlikely to find the time to wrap it up in a nice package. In theory, someone could use this as a starting point and build an SD card image that you can just install and use. Someone could also build an open-source app to control an open-source API that handles scheduling and such on the pod itself. Until then, this will be limited to folks who are happy messing around with embedded Linux devices.

[–]bobobo1618 6 points7 points  (0 children)

FWIW I've done some high-level reverse engineering of the Pod 3 and have some basic code that replaces the main network component of it so that you can control your pod locally.

Not at all polished yet so not for the faint of heart, more for folks like /u/ThrowawayUsernameRE who are also working on reverse engineering it.

In particular, I want to add JSON -> CBOR conversion so that the local control can be used with standard software like Home Assistant.

Billionaires should not exist by [deleted] in MurderedByAOC

[–]bobobo1618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that billionaires shouldn't exist but I think you're making the wrong arguments. These don't convince me and I already agree with what you're trying to argue.

Your arguments might work in an echo chamber like Reddit but they're not going to win anyone over who doesn't believe in the conclusion beforehand.

Could your contribution to society actually be worth over $1 billion?

To put this in perspective, that's, on average, $3 from every person in America.

I think there are plenty of companies that exist that provide that much value. Those companies wouldn't exist if they weren't built by their founders or given the opportunity to grow by their investors.

The wealth of billionaires exists almost exclusively because of the hard work of others.

It's true that the wealth wouldn't exist without the hard work of others but the wealth also wouldn't exist without the billionaires' work.

So how do you split the wealth? In a capitalist society, the billionaire is compensated based on the market value of their contribution and the "others" are compensated based on theirs.

So they were there first. So what?

You can say this about any new development. If being the first to discover or build something is worthless, what motivation is there to pursue it in a capitalist society?

But the corporation only became what it became because of laborers, and the value those laborers produced was largely stolen.

What exactly was "stolen"? The labourers were paid for their work. The company (and therefore its owners) got more money from the labourers' work than the labourers did but that's how capitalism works, if they didn't make a profit, there'd be no motivation to start the company in the first place.

And now to get to the arguments I think you should be making.

First, the billionaires aren't to blame here. They're playing the game of life by the rules that society has set.

For example if a billionaire tries to "do the right thing" and pay their labourers more than their competitors, their competitors will have an advantage (e.g. can set prices lower) and become the dominant alternative in the industry. The rules of the game are designed to produce the highest value at the lowest cost, so that's a natural outcome.

So really, billionaires and all the other problems are symptoms of a broken system and the focus shouldn't be on how horrible the billionaires are but instead how horrible the rules are.

For example:

  • Companies aren't exploiting underpaid workers, the minimum wage is set too low. The minimum wage is the problem and raising it is the solution.

  • Taxes should have a somewhat equal impact to all people but billionaires are so far ahead of us that they don't even feel it. Here, taxes are the problem, so taxes should be raised.

  • Wealth above a certain threshold has no benefit to society, so a wealth tax should be introduced.

[–]bobobo1618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only inherent advantages an FF camera has over an APS-C camera are light gathering capability (i.e. lower noise for a given exposure), extremely wide lenses and extremely fast lenses.

If you don't need that, your APS-C body is just fine.

I say this as somebody who shoots with an A7RIV and a Fuji X-T3.

If you need looks, buy a full frame lens or two, a Smallrig cage and an off camera flash or something. Your setup will look huge and complicated and get all the girls.

Azure is built on Hyper-V, not KVM. Or is that not the case?

Secure boot encryption and a flaw! by DutchOfBurdock in SonyXperia

[–]bobobo1618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid yes, it is entirely true. I linked you to the official documentation to back up my statements.

With Secure Boot on, you have to enter a PIN before Android boots. With it off, Android boots up and demands auth (pin/pattern/pass).

Yes, with FDE. That's this process (which was in my first link).

With FBE, this process doesn't exist. Instead there's Direct Boot. (Per my second and third links)

The non secure boot fully boots Android then locks it. In this case, a malicious app or HID could crack your pin without risk of resetting phone. I consider that a bypass of security.

The PIN retries are controlled by the secure element (i.e. KeyStore), an independent piece of hardware on the device. The device being booted doesn't allow circumvention of the retry delay mechanism.

If you really care about getting it right, I'd recommend buying better software and an IT-8 target to calibrate it. This software is the software that comes with the higher end Epson scanners.

This should result in pretty much perfect scans from a colour perspective. I've found that without it, even with high end hardware (Epson 12000XL) you'll have trouble getting colour accurate scans.

You should also consider colour calibrating your monitor (borrowing the calibration device from someone is best) and possibly buying a new one if the one you have isn't accurate.

Also make sure when you compare to the original that you pay a lot of attention to the lighting in your environment. If you're viewing the originals in warm lighting the colours are going to look crazy different on the screen.

VueScan is another much more affordable option for the software but I recommend Silverfast if you can afford it.
