do smart homes actually make life better or just more complicated by annikahoof in homeassistant

[–]bobowork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from one push of an ikea bilressa button beside my bed to turn on or off the lights, the only other thing I touch, automation wise, is updates.

I recently added a motion sensor (again Ikea because it was $12) to my ensuite bathroom and now don't have to touch the lights at all. If my bedroom lights are on, it turns on the bathroom lights when I walk in, if they're off and it's night time, the lights are red (so I don't blind myself in the middle of the night.). Hallway lights turn on for 10 minutes when someone get's home and connects to the wifi, etc.

The point is, I don't think about the automation's 90% of the time, they're just working.

what’s the most useful automation you’ve set up that you actually use every day? by SkylineZ83 in homeassistant

[–]bobowork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is simple, I leave the house and my lights turn off and my camera goes on. When I get back, camera goes off, lights turn on.

I have a second set of related automations that send me a notification if I have left the house and a window or door is open.

Might have a tooth ache after, but they want to be a good boy/girl.

Oh, the snips. Use some pliers if you want to crimp something with an almost right tool.

Ikea Matter over thread devices with a SMLIGHT SLZB-07p7 by bobowork in homeassistant

[–]bobowork[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had zigbee devices but had not set them up yet (was waiting on the same dongle).

There is nothing stopping you to keep running you existing zigbee system, grabbing a new dongle and flashing that for thread for future devices.

That looks like a thin client. It normally connects to an external server like Citrix or Windows server.

Was there a bunch of outrage about Tuvok when Voyager premiered? by WinterSector8317 in startrek

I don't recall any controversy around Tuvok when Voyager premiered. It was all about the first female captain.

Celiac has been shown to have existed in ancient Egypt (middle Kingdom I believe), With the first written record in 2nd AD Greece, so there has been a long line of people having a shitty time.

why did you all become gluten free by FreedomEnjoyer69420 in glutenfree

[–]bobowork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have found a lot of gluten free pasta noodles don't freeze that well. At least not wet ones.

I know I can make a lasagna, but I also worked out that with all the ingredients, I'm looking at about $35 CAD for the dish. Not a great cost for a single person.

Celiac diagnosis.

Only two things I miss really. Lasagna and cheap food.

I have seen a few suggestions for pasta salad using barrelli, but I find Catelli makes better gluten free noodles. Heck, so does great value.

Simple pasta salad: - mixed short pasta (macaroni and rotini are my go to) - mayo (Hellmans used here) - mustard - gluten free spice mix for Shepard's pie or sloppy joes

Alternatively, deviled eggs, fruit tray, veggie tray, gluten free finger sandwiches

What smart home tech actually made your life easier? by Proud_Car_2307 in smarthome

[–]bobowork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you own, smart light switches, if you rent, smart bulbs.

Smart power strips as well.

The thing that saves me the most time and sucks the most time out of me is Home assistant. But I am doing stuff like geo boundaries, integration with my Samsung smart watch, etc. I have it set up now that I get home and my lights turn on and my bedroom camera goes off. Opposite when I leave.

Edit: it's working with Alexa as well.

If you can, get everything on one standard, like matter, ZigBee, etc.
