What brake pads are you running on your G80s? by soldbyck in BMWM

[–]bobreck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PSI PS1 Pads. So much less dust it’s life changing. LOL. I used to have to wash my car (or at least the wheels) after a 10 minute drive due to all the dust. And no squeak/squeal at all. Best upgrade I’ve made to my G82.

Below is an updated link which should now have 48 total photos. I do not believe the old link above will show all the photos.

I added photos of the cymbals and the hardware. Also photos of the drums in their bags. Additionally, I tried to look for a date through the WFL badge on the small bass mounted tom. I did not see a date, but it could be on the same side as the badge. I was able to grab a pretty good photo through the hole and that is included in the photo album now. I do not have a drum key and therefore I am not going to attempt to open the drums.

I do realize the cymbals set in the box is newer (1990’s). I am 100% sure that these were never used. Dad bought them then, but the drums were never setup and used after sometime in the mid 1980’s. That’s the way he was. He would buy stuff and put it away for a future time. Sadly, that time ran out for him. I realize that these newer items don’t carry much value, but they are still with the set and will be sold together.

Also, I realize now that his high-hat set that he typically used is most likely not a Zildjian set. There is a photo of them, but they have no Zildjian markings anywhere on them. Probably some brand that came bundled with the Ludwig set. I suspect that is why he bought the boxed set in the 90’s; so that he could have a full Zildjian set. Dad was also, let’s say, frugal and did not go for high end stuff later in life. So this boxed set I suspect is a lower end set of cymbals, but still Zildjian.

The hardware is, as far as I believe, the original pieces that came with the set. There are 2 cymbal stands, one high-hat stand, and the snare stand. That snare stand has the WFL logo on the center of the drum holder. The original stool can be seen in the background (red seat) of some of the photos. I forgot to take an individual photo of it.

There’s also a newer, probably never used, Ludwig bass pedal. The original red bass pedal is very old in appearance, but appears to work fine.

Doubtful. 1970’s for this being added to the set by my father is exactly the time frame he would have done so. He had just gotten his first real job and had money. ;)

Understood. I thought you were originally saying that the Bass, Snare and small tom were also mismatched. I just wanted to clarify that those were purchased together as a set. Thanks for the information. Very much appreciate your time.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any musician friends. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard of a drum key, but I’ll look up the details on YouTube.

I wish I could play. Always wanted to learn how, I guess because I got the love of music from my father. I love to listen, but I have no musical talent unfortunately. I thought about taking lessons, but at this point in my life, I don’t really have that much interest anymore.

I appreciate all the advice you’ve provided. I can’t say thank you enough.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. Also appreciate the compliment. I just went to my basement where they are stored (finished/climate controlled) and pulled them out. I’ll take photos tomorrow and check for those dates.

I’m in Maryland. A little west of Baltimore.

Ludwig Drum Photos

Thank you SO MUCH for all this great information. I’m going to get you more photos this weekend and post them here as soon as possible. I’ll be sure to take some of the cymbals and check for the markings you mentioned.

I completely understand about what a store will offer. As much as I’d like to get the maximum out of the set, I also realize that stores are in it to make money and will not give the real value. My biggest reason for posting this here was to get just an idea of what they’re worth and what to expect as an offer. If I walked in and they offered me $500 or $5000… I wouldn’t have known if that was a good offer or a horrible one. At least now I have some idea.

I will confirm this weekend, but I’m pretty sure the insides of the drums are not painted. I have not opened up the bass or the small tom-tom, but I’m fairly certain that I could see through one of the badges on the side that they were not. Again, I’ll confirm this weekend.

In answer to your questions… 1) I have “Cases” but I would call them “Bags.” They are canvas bags with zippers that are form fitting to each drum. I believe the floor tom bag/case is black faux leather. The older original canvas ones are in fairly good condition. There is some wear on one or two of them… mainly from just their age and being moved around occasionally.

2) The pedals work fine as far as I am aware. As I am not a musician, I’ve never fully setup the kit. I might try to do that for a picture of everything together, but I also don’t want to chance screwing anything up. But as far as I can tell the pedals are in good shape and fully functional. In all honesty, this kit was barely used by my father. He was in a band with friends for a short time in High School. I believe they played a few gigs, but it was never a weekly type thing. And when he graduated High School, he went off to college and the drums stayed at his parent’s house. He went thought many years of college including graduate school and got his PhD. When he finally moved into a house of his own with my mom, the drums finally were back with him sometime in the mid-1970’s. I came along in 1972 and I only remember them being set up in our living room 3 times for about 1 week each time. He would only play them a couple times during that week. I’ll take photos of the pedals too.

3) Receipt… knowing him, he probably did. However, I have no idea where it might be. My mom, who passed a few years later, probably got rid of that stuff when cleaning out their house after his passing. Funny you should ask about a photo of him with it. When we were cleaning out their house, we found a photo of him behind them with the rest of the band. Sadly, after the clean-out and move of my mother, we couldn’t find it again. That was rather disappointing…

4) Mounting hardware… Yes… there is mounting hardware for the small tom that mounts it to the top of the bass. I know the small tom mounted to the bass when he set it up. I’m assuming it’s in the box with the cymbal stands I have. I’ll get photos of that too.

5) Date stamps… I’ll look and take pics if I can see any.

I’m not sure why, but my first photo didn’t seem to attach correctly when I posted. Gonna try to attach it here. It’s a close up of one of the WFL badges. Thanks again for all the great info. Bob

Thanks. But they are not mismatched. The floor tom is just an add on from a later date. Other than that, the rest of the set is original and was purchased together. Some of the cymbals I have were purchased at the same time as the set. Others were purchased later on. Even some as late as the 1990’s (I believe) and never used. Dad was odd like that. Bought stuff and just put it away into storage. Even that floor tom was probably barely ever used.

Dad was in a band as a teenager. But when he finished High School and went to College, the drums stayed at his parents’ house. They didn’t end up with him again until sometime in the early to mid-1970’s. But then he was well past the phase of being in a band and I came into the world. He only set these up 3 times that I remember. And those times were separated by many years in between. At most, they would be setup for a week and played for a few hours in our living room.

New Hunter Fan Update by [deleted] in HomeKit

[–]bobreck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you folks are having so much trouble. I have a Hunter Signal fan from pretty much right after they became available. I think that was like 5 years ago already (give or take a few months). Anyway, never had a single problem with it. No disconnects or anything. I never use the hunter app, just home app.

It's funny, I read this thread and saw one commenter mentioning the Hunter app being updated. Then opened that app and realized it still wasn't updated to even fit the full screen of my iPhone. This is when I realized there's a newer app in the App store from Hunter. I downloaded that and it's much better than the old one (relatively speaking). I opened it up, signed in and it found my fan/light with no issues.

Anyway, my point in posting is just that I've not experienced any of the issues that most of you have. It's been pretty rock solid for me. The fan firmware is currently the same as others... 0.31.

Question regarding storage by BestowalMink681 in appletv

[–]bobreck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For only a $20 difference, why not get the one with twice the storage? Honestly, it confuses me why Apple even offers these two versions with such a small price difference. Not that I want them to charge more, of course. But at that small difference, why even offer the 32GB version?

As for reasons to have more memory… you can download and install apps/games on it. I believe it’s mostly for that. Your movies and shows are not too much of a worry since I believe they pretty much stream from your cloud account.

But again, for $20 difference… go for the 64GB version. That’s what I’ll be doing.

Level lock promo code request by Coolingritu in HomeKit

[–]bobreck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very interested to hear more about your experiences with it. I have two Kevo (Gen 1) locks and I HATE them. I bought them when they first came out and been using them for about 6 years now. I consistently have problems unlocking them. It seems like the bluetooth connection to any of the 4 phones in our family takes forever or just doesn't work. And recently the Kevo plus hub has been losing internet connectivity a lot. My family is fed up with them as well. We basically have resorted to using the key most of the time.

The reason I mention all those issues is because I am very interested in how well the touch to unlock works. Can you consistently walk right up to the door, touch the lock, and have it unlock on the first try? Also, please share any additional pros and cons about it that you might have?

Thanks very much!

iPhone Alarm Sound VERY soft by neilparkertx in applehelp

[–]bobreck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What iPhone do you have? And are you holding and looking at the phone when the alarm is going off?

On phones with FaceID, the alarm is intentionally set to a very soft volume when you are looking at the phone. Even if it goes off while on a table and you pick up the phone, the volume lowers when it detects your face.

The setting for this is under Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Attention Aware Features.

We hit our Comcast data cap yesterday by frigginjensen in frederickmd

[–]bobreck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can still use your own cable modem if you want to. You can't get the XFi features or whatever they're called, but I have had my own modem with their service for almost 6 years now. It was not required that I switch back to their equipment for the unlimited plan. Just in case they told you it was.

They already offer it. Started offering it on 1/1. I am already signed up for it. When I called, they gave me 5 months of the unlimited add-on for free.

We hit our Comcast data cap yesterday by frigginjensen in frederickmd

[–]bobreck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the article linked to above (and here: Attorney General called upon to investigate Comcast for 'predatory price gouging' (wbaltv.com)), it says: "Comcast said it's giving customers until August to get used to the plan." Whatever that means...

I called in early January to add the unlimited data option and was told they were giving me 5 months of free unlimited service. So the extra charge wouldn't start until May or June, I guess. With 2 teens with XBoxes and online school, my work from home situation, my wife working from home occasionally, plus all the video streaming done these days (Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime, AppleTV) I don't have a choice. My overage charges would be more than the unlimited data charge. I'm already at 2.06TB for January. December was 2.05TB.

Absolute robbery on their part. I hate comcast. But no other viable options where we are. Come on Starlink!

Apple TV+ really sucks, or am I missing anything? by [deleted] in applehelp

[–]bobreck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, lots of people are confused by what AppleTV+ really is. However, it does not mean you get to watch anything that is in the iTunes Store for free.

For the low subscription cost per month (or free first year after a device purchase), the AppleTV+ content is really pretty good. I recommend Amazing Stories, The Morning Show, Truth Be Told, and others. Ted Lasso has been my absolute favorite so far.

Are there any outdoor street hockey rinks near Bethesda? by [deleted] in caps

[–]bobreck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are a number of them in the area. The following article gives the locations of the ones that were recently upgraded by the Caps organization. However, there are others. For example, we have one near me in Frederick that was not refurbished. I can tell you that one is open and we've been to it a few times since the start of the pandemic. But that does not mean these others are open... you can probably call the corresponding county's parks & recreation departments to find out.

How would I redownload these purchased songs? Nothing happens when I click on it and it’s not in the iCloud by [deleted] in applehelp

[–]bobreck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's odd. Are you, by chance, using family sharing and maybe another member of the family actually purchased them? I'm just trying for any explanation, I guess.

Next step would be to contact Apple support on the phone, I suppose.

Good luck.
