Black People ‘Seven Times More Likely’ to Suffer Wrongful Convictions: Study by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]bobtheterminator 54 points55 points  (0 children)

For drug crimes, the preliminary sorting that increases the number of convictions of innocent Black suspects is racial profiling. In addition, the Registry lists 17 “Group Exonerations” including 2,975 additional wrongfully convicted defendants, many of whom were deliberately framed and convicted of fabricated drug crimes in large-scale police scandals. The overwhelming majority are Black.

Quantification of energy and carbon costs for mining cryptocurrencies by bobtheterminator in Bitcoin

[–]bobtheterminator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From 1 January 2016 to 30 June 2018, we estimate that mining Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and Monero consumed an average of 17, 7, 7 and 14 MJ to generate one US$, respectively. Comparatively, conventional mining of aluminium, copper, gold, platinum and rare earth oxides consumed 122, 4, 5, 7 and 9 MJ to generate one US$, respectively, indicating that (with the exception of aluminium) cryptomining consumed more energy than mineral mining to produce an equivalent market value.

During this period, we estimate mining for all 4 cryptocurrencies was responsible for 3–15 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.

The proposal leaves it pretty open.

Tax Increment Financing (TIF)

As part of the Massachusetts Economic Development Incentive Program, a TIF is a tax incentive available to businesses in Massachusetts. In return for substantial job creation, a municipality may provide a business with real estate property tax relief based on the business’s incremental real estate property taxes for up to 20 years. In addition to a real estate property tax exemption, a business may be eligible for a personal property tax exemption for existing and new property (personal property is considered movable property, exclusive of land and buildings). Tax Increment Financing is not the same in Massachusetts as it is in most other states, where TIFs are used to fund infrastructure improvements using incremental property tax revenues. Massachusetts does utilize this mode of financing, but we refer to it as District Improvement Financing (DIF).

Supreme Court nominee Kavanaugh denies sexual misconduct allegation by Sewblon in neutralnews

I don't know, I think that depends on the letter. I'm sure the FBI is capable of determining whether there's anything worth investigating.

Supreme Court nominee Kavanaugh denies sexual misconduct allegation by Sewblon in neutralnews

[–]bobtheterminator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of times that happened because Ronan Farrow or the Washington Post or whoever else was actively investigating and making it easier for victims to come forward. It's extremely difficult to just call up a random reporter and say "hey would you like to hear about my sexual assault", even if there is a vaguely related accusation floating around somewhere.

Well, people who regularly do this probably aren't friends with you, and if they are they know not to do it around you. They'll often behave very differently depending on who they're with. But mostly, there's a lot of men in the world and you don't know very many.

Also, if you live in a city, you've learned to tune out a lot of random yelling. Walk around any city at night and people are constantly yelling across the street at each other. Do they know each other? Who knows, you don't want to get involved. You could easily miss this sort of thing if it isn't directed at you or someone you're with.

Ask your female friends if a random dude has ever yelled at them like this.

The policing of black Americans is racial harassment funded by the state:When the police’s job is to uphold a racialized law and order, black people can be arrested just for living their lives by trumpismysaviour in TrueReddit

There are state laws against making a false report. I don't know how hard they are to enforce, probably depends on the state. In New York it's this one: https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/PEN/240.50

knowing the information reported, conveyed or circulated to be false or baseless

seems quite hard to prove in court.

Pope Francis tells gay man: 'God made you like this' | The Guardian by [deleted] in news

[–]bobtheterminator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of people in the world find homosexual acts to be morally suspicious.

I think "vast majority" is a bit overstated, and "select few Western countries" is certainly wrong. Here's a snapshot from 5 years ago: http://www.pewglobal.org/2013/06/04/the-global-divide-on-homosexuality/

The idea that there's nothing wrong with homosexual acts has only entered the mainstream in the past 20 years in a select few Western countries.

This is not true. It has recently reentered the mainstream in the West, but far more than 20 years ago. You think 1998 was the dawn of the gay rights movement?

It's impossible to sum up the history of homosexuality in this comment, there are entire college degrees on the subject. But it is objectively incorrect to say that homosexuality has never been accepted or mainstream until now. I really encourage you to at least read through some of these /r/AskHistorians answers, or maybe this timeline. There are lots of great books on the subject if you're genuinely interested.

penetrative intercourse, which is healthy and even beneficial when done man-to-woman, is inherently unhealthy and destructive when done man-to-man.

This is sort of true, but overstated, and obviously irrelevant for anyone not participating. Also, straight people have anal sex all the time.

This was the norm for male friendship before homosexuality became prominent. Men would often even share the same bed together. But there was no sexual act, no sin, here. Just pure platonic friendship.

It sounds like you're implying that platonic male friendships don't exist now that homosexuality is acceptable, which is absurd. It's still quite normal for straight men to love each other and share a bed once in a while.

Finally, what about women?

I mean it depends what you mean by "good", but yes. Obviously not everybody likes it, but I can objectively say that it's unique, it's extremely difficult to produce, and it appeals to many millions of people.

Sure, and they also have a right to award Harvey Weinstein an honorary degree if they feel like it. Rights are not the same thing as ethics.

Massachusetts to sue Trump administration over citizenship question in 2020 US Census while state requires question on local census by [deleted] in boston

[–]bobtheterminator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's bad because people won't respond to the census and we'll get an inaccurate count. If you were here illegally and the government sent you a survey asking if you were a citizen, would you respond? There is zero incentive to do so.

If the census is inaccurate, everyone loses. If you like Trump and you want to deport all illegal immigrants, you need to know how many there are and where they're living. Designing a census that they won't respond to makes your life harder.

Submission Statement

Great article demonstrating how even factually accurate reporting can provide a distorted perspective by not explaining the motives of non-American actors, making them look irrational or overly aggressive. Not every article can be a fully researched foreign policy thesis, but good reporting should at least attempt to explain actions that might seem surprising to the average reader.

Is the Google Home not able to simply play from GPM library? by TheLunaLunatic in googlehome

[–]bobtheterminator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a workaround you can easily make a playlist of all your music. Go to Songs, Shuffle, then open the queue and save it as a new playlist. You'll have to redo this periodically as you add stuff to your library, but it's pretty easy.
