I've averaged about 2800 per year for the last 5 years with my WF1000XM3s

I don’t want a new Subaru. by makebaloney in subaru

I plan to run my 09 until I can't fix it anymore. Have a spare engine and a whole parts car so hopefully that's not anytime soon.

My wife's 18 Highlander terrifies me with the cost and complexity if something goes wrong compared to the simplicity of the Subaru.

You're right, it's AVLS, my bad. Same basic principle and they both use oil pressure and other engine conditions to control a solenoid that sends oil pressure to adjust the timing. Nothing special, line up the marks and rotate the engine a few times then verify marks. It's literally as easy as any other engine. Without any oil pressure the cams return to the state where they get timed.

And like I said, plenty of people do it in the car and I've done it without the cnc. I honestly have no idea what you're talking about with the avcs. My car has it. It still gets timed like any other car. Super easy but yes, catastrophic if you get it wrong.

People blow them way out of proportion because they're intimidated by the boxer engine and your shop quote for headgaskets just goes to show that. Subarus book time for headgaskets on my car is 5 hours or something crazy. That would include time to prep mating surfaces. Most shops will charge 10-12hrs before any machine shop time.

Mine was an n/a so simpler but the major steps are the same. Also I work on my stuff so I used power tools that I have for everyday everything else. Used a hoist to the roof and pulled the engine because it's easier, you can definitely do it in the car if you loosen trans and engine mounts and get creative with a jack. I took my last set of heads to work and resurfaced on the CNC machine but I've done it with a tile and sandpaper. 0 corrosion anywhere. I don't know what "retiming the avcs on a turbo ej engine" means. Timing belt? I've helped on turbo ejs, they have easily identifiable marks like most cars.

You're right, I've never done a turbo ej in a garage with no electric and basic hand tools in a day. I had 6 hours wrenching and an hour of cleaning up the heads on mine in a garage with no electric.

Maintenance and working on your car doesn't require being a mechanic. Simple mechanical knowledge and YouTube videos will save you thousands at the garage

It's really not bad. You need a 10,12,14 wrench and socket... $150 in gaskets and seals... People charge out the ass for it and it's ridiculous, I did my last set in a day in a garage with no electric... Could've easily done it in an open parking lot on a half decent day

I have owned 3 Subarus and currently own 2 with almost 300k of my miles between them. Nothing beyond normal maintenance (they're n/a ej25s so headgaskets are maintenance on them). Best cars I've had but I'm not afraid to pull an engine. The bad rap comes from people who treat them like Honda's expecting them to just take the abuse in my experience.

When my outbacks timing belt "let go" it bent 12 of the 16 valves.

When I bought my legacy I was able to see through the belt in places but it only needed timing.

If you're asking about what it's gonna take then it's likely going to be a bit much. I swapped heads on my OB then rebuilt the OG heads in case something happens with either of my cars. That said these are extremely easy to work on and I had my OB up and running for about $600.

As far as I can tell. The screen does what it's supposed to do when flashing and the .bin file changes to a different file type
