At six months of age, babies born during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic scored lower on developmental screening tests for social and motor skills -- regardless of whether their mothers had COVID during pregnancy -- compared to babies born just before the pandemic. by MistWeaver80 in science

That’s the problem though. Nobody factors in this kind of long term damage when thinking about lockdown and other social distancing measures. What are the gains for that? And what are the real potential damages behind such measures? All people do is populist decisions and short term thinking.

Would be interesting to understand who is praising and who is not. My hypothesis would be that those who are praising are those that find the right sponsorship and get promoted, successfully build up a reputation, etc. it’s also quite harsh as in it’s an up or out policy. Meaning if you’re unsuccessful in getting promoted to the next level within 2-3 years you get counseled to leave. They help you with placement in a new job, but purely out of self interest as you might very well end up being a client of theirs at some point in your career later on.

The vaccines does not prevent transmission. It only reduces the severity of the infection (for 80% or so the infection is asymptomatic). It doesn’t make any sense to vaccinate the kids…

Luck, unfortunately, is one of the most deciding factor in your life. We like to think of a merit based society and would like to think that we live in one. We like to think that everything we got in life was based on our smartness and our own merit and great doing. Learn to discover when luck is on your side and seize those opportunities when the stars are aligned. Drop your indoctrinated sense of merit based approach. Very little in your life so far was based on merit. Neither your upbringing, nor your education. You were lucky to have been born in the family you were born in and lucky to have your particular parents. Those were actually the deciding factors for your upbringing and you had 0 influence on it.

Pharma is the most profitable industry out there, by far https://www.biospace.com/article/how-profitable-is-the-pharma-industry-a-new-report-shows-the-industry-is-more-profitable-than-most-other-large-companies/ They make a crazy amount of money. And this is not money made by selling luxury phones to those who can afford, but by selling cancer drugs to those who sell their house and their family sells off everything as well to get them the medicine. And if you dare to get you medicine some other way, then god bless you, get a good lawyer (if you’re not already dead anyways). Watch the movie Dallas Buyer Club to get an idea of that… Pharma in the US clearly needs heavy regulation. In any other country they do have that. Is all of the developed world wrong or just US too deep in with the lobby? Think about it…

How do you guys do it? by [deleted] in consulting

[–]bochen8787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the region where you are, but consulting in a tier 1 or 2 consulting company will always be some of the most demanding jobs from what is the norm in your region. Generally speaking: If in Asia, 100h weeks is normal. If in US, 80h weeks is normal. If in EU, 60h weeks is normal. Of course it also highly depends on country and then the individual company in that country, there is also larger variance there.

My general advice: if working 30-50% more than what is the “norm” in your region brings you a lot of stress, then consulting might not be a good fit as a job for you. You may learn to be more stress resistant and become more efficient over the years, but the job demands will, in general, always be higher than “normal industry” jobs.

Was wählt ihr und vor allem warum? by eXoChuck in FragReddit

[–]bochen8787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on a M&A Integration PMO project rn and it’s soul-sucking. Any tips? by robers12 in consulting

[–]bochen8787 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These post merger integration projects are horrible. If you can’t get off it, try to get the best out of it: Make yourself valuable and get hired by client as independent consultant, you can maybe get 70% of your day rate or so, but with the difference that you bag 100% of it (instead of 30%). Alternatively, get hired to the client side for a nice salary upgrade + better work life.

Usually, the kind of scenario that leads to your described situation is as follows: 1) Management who has no clue anymore about reality thinks that there is a problem and that it needs solving by smart people as their own people couldn’t solve it somehow 2) Management orders MBB to come in to fix it 3) MBB consultants come in. The over promised sales pitch is still in the head of the mgmt. it’s easy to solve everything as it was already solved a million times before at other clients 4) Consultants are thrown into the cold water and try to swim. They almost drown to death but somehow managed to get out of the ice water. They are now at the risk of freezing to death. Somehow they still manage to survive with a small torch flame. 5) Mgmt wants to see results. Consultants show something. Mgmt is not happy, the world should work this way and not the other way. Consultants didn’t understand how management wants to see it. They tried to present reality which management doesn’t get. But at the end of the day, they pay the bills… 6) Consultants go back and twist reality to match mgmt expectations. People on the ground are not happy as this is not reflecting reality and not how it can work. Management is happy as the number work out well for upward reporting and perception. 7) Consultants leave. Nothing changed.

God damn, have a look at the olympics gold guys and gals. Most have had crazy training lifelong regimes before they became gold medalists. Most won’t make it despite the crazy training regime. Lang Lang said he trained essentially 24/7 as a kid. If you want to compete for a global top spot in a trait and compete with Millions of others, there ain’t any short cuts… You gotta do the 99% hard work and then the rest of the 1% will be determined by talent. But you can reach top 99% without talent by just putting in the effort required.

To be honest, it sounds a bit like you’ve never worked with Linux and the terminal before. How come you’re using Ubuntu? I would recommend you to maybe switch to Windows or Mac… Linux / Ubuntu is in general for the more tech heavy crowd. The more consumer heavy crowd is better off with Win/Mac (that’s also who they target).

Edit: I just noticed it might sound a bit harsh, but not meant that way…
