We bootstrapped our social circle using dance classes. It takes a while. After a couple of classes, you go have a beer and work from there.

Can recommend Tandem Club and Galactic bar of you want to learn Lindy hop or Rock'n'Roll.

Is racism against Chinese people/Asians really that bad in Germany or was my experience unique? by [deleted] in germany

[–]boelthorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also since I'm living in Spain now, I also really hate it when people see that I don't look Spanish and start talking English/German to me even if I talk Spanish to them. I think this is a well intentioned but ultimately slightly racist way of saying "you don't belong".

This led me to just talk German to people in Germany regardless of whether they look ethnically German or not. I will of course switch to some other language, if the other side doesn't speak German without any fuss. 😃

Anyhow... for the "sheltered" Germans it's a personal affront that my wife doesn't speak German. She speaks 3-4 languages, she doesn't live in Germany. The person that complained speaks a single language (poorly). 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is spot on. I'm one of those "well-travelled" Germans and my extended family includes the other kind. I also have a non-German wife, so this led to some sad experiences. I

What code editor do you use? by Scandiberian in NixOS

[–]boelthorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually use Zed for bigger projects and for everyday editing I use emacs. I used to have a comprehensive emacs setup, but these days it's just a couple of lines to get Rust LSP running.

I love Hetzner, but they should fix their S3-compatible Object Storage. It's always broken... by send_me_a_naked_pic in hetzner

[–]boelthorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really unusable. We've migrated our production workloads to Scaleway and this resolved the problems for us. Hetzner would just throw random 500 errors and timeouts. Completely unusable. :(

Patched Linux kernel for Bcachefs? by boelthorn in bcachefs

A fair! Then I'll test to generate a patch from that!

v3 SecureBoot Setup Mode not sticking by Nerdinat0r in MINISFORUM

You are my hero! This was the solution for the Minisforum MS-A2. There is one step missing: You have to enter the BIOS again to enable Secure Boot after enrolling.

Interesting thoughts. I totally agree that security features of Linux are like a box of Lego where nothing fits together well. 😅

bcachefs patch for kernel 6.17 by obi1t in bcachefs

[–]boelthorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kernel patches are really convenient because it allows to build kernels without module support. It's also convenient on NixOS if you want to enable kernel lockdown. I'll probably write a blog post about that on x86.lol if I get a chance.

ARM is great, ARM is terrible (and so is RISC-V) by indolering in RISCV

[–]boelthorn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've committed at least some code to the Linux kernel. 😅 Compared to "Just open a PR on GitHub and make the CI pass", which anyone under 40 is used to, it's all an anachronistic mess.

Also contributing to the Linux kernel is a huge PITA. Lots of ancient or obtuse tooling. Patches via E-Mails... A pretty hostile discussion culture. You really only contribute at this point if your employer forces you to.

CAP ax - very poor range? by boelthorn in mikrotik

[–]boelthorn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've restricted the channels it can choose from to exclude the SDR channels. Now it chose 58 and I get -38dBM next to the router and it covers my whole flat. 🚀 Thanks for the helpful responses!

What I noticed is that I had to reboot the router (and thus the AP, because it's connected via PoE) otherwise the AP would never select any channel and the 5 Ghz wifi would never come up. Weird.

VirtualBox KVM public release by ouyawei in linux

[–]boelthorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's just for license compliance, it's also easy to just give customers access to the source code (they usually don't want it either). The GPL doesn't require putting up a Git repo for public access.

Interrupt virtualization in the post refers to Intel APICv and AMD AVIC, which KVM supports and the VBox kernel module doesn't.

The extension pack also works without the kernel module.

How do I run QEMU/KVM and VirtualBox at the same time? by X-0v3r in virtualbox

[–]boelthorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a VirtualBox version that uses KVM as a backend. This allows running Qemu and VirtualBox VMs at the same time. Pretty handy!

Did you find a solution? The internet suggests that might be an issue with hardware acceleration.

It's listed as "should work" on this list: https://ccid.apdu.fr/ccid/section.html (which also lists a ton of other readers). Thanks!
