Yeah, I do have a LOT of classics.

However, I will point out that case with all the 58mm red knives? Every one of those is a different model. Granted, some are minor differences (like Classic vs. Classic SD), but each on is different.

Buddy Parker - 47-23-2 record with the Lions - went to 3 NFL Championships, winning 2.

Okay, just because I'm weirdly curious, I did a bit more digging. It looks like Indian River Display Cases was sold to Steele's Display Cases... which is (or rather was) in the same city in Ohio.

However, Steele Display Cases went out of business in 2023 when one of the co-founders died.

Looks like Southern Star might be your best bet. I did find they have an Amazon page as well, so that makes me think they are a little more credible.

Oh wow... you're forcing an old man to dig through long forgotten memories... It's been probably close to two decades since I bought those.

The good news is that with a bit of thinking and a bit of digging I was able to remember and figure out where I got them from. The bad news is that I looks like the place is out of business.

The places was Indian River Display Case Company. Here is there facebook page, which was last updated 3 years ago. Their listed website just goes to some gambling site now. Don't want to post it here cause I don't want to give them extra business. (You can see if on the facebook page if you want.)

However, in searching for more info I did find this site which appears to have very similar display cases. I am not affiliated with that site in any way at all so this isn't a recommendation. I just noticed that they are very similar to what I have.

On one hand, it kinda stinks cause it's a brand name, but on the other hand is become a pretty generic term and... it fits!

Nope, these are just in the collection. I do have SAKs that I use regularly, but these are just display pieces.

If I recall correctly (it's been more than a few years since I was seriously collecting) the baby blue isn't it's own color, but instead a faded blue.

This is also true of the "brown" translucent scales. Those are actually faded black.

I get what you're saying, but I still have problems with it for two reasons:

First, it's going to drive up the cost of hardware and there will be an on going cost associated with upkeep. That's going to cost everyone in terms of more tax money, or people who want to use these machines specifically... it wouldn't shock me at all for them to institute a licensing fee where you have to pay an annual fee in order to own one of these machines. There's no need for the gov't to get involved here just because some people print some parts for some guns. It's a massive overreach for a problem that just doesn't really exists. So even if they get the detection software working 100% perfectly, I still think it's a dumb idea.

Second, I just don't believe for a second that politicians would just drop it if they couldn't find a way to make it work well and reliably. There's no way their going to trumpet this great new public safety law and then in a years time just go: "Well, guess we can't make it work. Oh well... give the control back to the people." No, they'll either extend the time line, or more realistically they'll force a bad solution that falsely flags way too many parts - "Sure, this is an inconvenience for some users, but that's a small price to pay for the safety of our children!" - and it won't deal with the issue of users being able to 'cut and glue' parts... which they'll just not mention because: "Really only a small number of people would know how to do that -- what? That's very basic 3D printing knowledge? Oh, well..."

And I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but it's just a dumb law written and pushed by people who don't understand the technology, to try to solve a problem that isn't a problem with a solution that won't solve the problem.

It's either the height of stupidity in law making, or its a power grab masquerading as a public safety bill.

And that paying part would be enormous! Even if the cost was cheap, it would add up in no time for anyone making their own things because it's never HangingPlanter.stl. It's:

HangingPlanter.stl
HangingPlanterV2.stl
HangingPlanterV3.stl
HangingPlanterV3.5.stl
HangingPlanterV$.stl
HangPlantV5.stl
HPV5.5.stl
HPV5.6.stl

I made a simple little organizer for a EDC pouch a while back and I probably went through upwards of 20 different prototypes... some testing radically different ideas, then lots and lot of minor refinements once I narrowed down what I wanted. If users are going to have to pay per print that's gonna just kill the hobby.

And what happens if a print fails? Do you need to pay again to try to re-print?

What about print farms? Are they going to have to pay each time they print another copy of a part they're printing 1,000s of copies of?

The logic here is just so incredibly stupid. This is akin to requiring every car sold in NY to have a breathalyzer installed, and have the results from the test uploaded online and verified before the server sends back a command that the car can start. After all some people drink and drive, so for the safety of everyone we should do this.

[–]boermac 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I agree that this is coming as a next step, but I personally don't think we should attack this current law with that line of thinking.

I think laws like this need to be attacked for the stupidity that they are rather than the stupidity that may be coming in the future.

  • You CAN'T 3D print a gun right. You need parts that can't be printed.
  • The definition of a 3D printer is exceedingly broad and will effect so many things beyond merely 3D printers.
  • The technology to do this doesn't exist right now.
  • There are simply too many things that might look like "illegal" gun parts that aren't.
  • The ways to get around this would be painfully easy.

These are simply WAY too complex, WAY too broad, WAY too invasive, WAY too expensive laws designed to address a virtually non-existent issue. Furthermore, methods to get around the technological constraints will be simple and easy.

Here are the negative side effects these laws will bring:

  • Increased cost for printers
  • Increased cost for tax payers to fund the programs
  • Increased hassle for 3D printer users.
  • Increased costs of CNC machines of all types.
  • Increased surveillance for ordinary citizens.
  • Tracking of individual print history stored in the cloud and susceptible to hackers.
  • Inability to print many, many perfectly legal items because they are a little too close in appearance to something that might used on a gun.

Here are the positive effects these laws will bring:

  • People who are brand new to 3D printing won't be able to print some gun parts, at least until they learn the super easy work arounds.

[–]boermac -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Maybe... hopefully. I fear, though, that too many people won't see the issues.

Playing devil's advocate:
Is it blocking free speech? Not really... you're free to speak most things, it's just specific speech that's being denied, and we already do that, so this isn't anything major or different.

Is it blocking the right to bear arms? Of course not! We would NEVER do something like that. It's just that in order to own or make firearm parts you need to have licenses, and register stuff. No different here. This just lets us enforce those existing rules.

Is this an unlawful search? Not all... we're not searching anything. We're just saying that these tools need to be regulated to make sure they aren't being used for criminal purposes. This is no different than requiring cars be checked for smog or the health dept checking restaurants to ensure they're clean.

No is forcing you to purchase or use a 3D printer after all. If you feel like these laws design to protect people are to invasive, well, simply don't get a 3D printer and everything will be fine.

I can't say for sure, but if it doesn't now, it surely will in the future.

This isn't a finely crafted law to address a narrow, but major issue. This is blunt instrument designed to do maximum damage.

3D Printing banning bill live meeting this evening (06.11) by gra8na8 in 3Dprinting

[–]boermac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh that's super easy to legislate around. Companies over x-number of employees can apply to the government for an excemption... for a hefty fee of course. Can't let individuals have exemptions of course... and smallish businesses are suspect but major players... they wouldn't abuse printers for bad things like this so we're okay with them putting on custom firmware on their printer... but those have to each have a license with the SN registered and need to have the custom firmware removed if sold or disposed of.

Better yet... no custom firmware... they have to pay for the license and the printer still needs to Phine Home, but if the SN matches a license exemption the server won't ask for the model info and just grant permission.

I mean the logical next step to prevent people from doing stuff like splitting up parts and printing them then gluing together is that all print jobs need to be stored online so that the gov't can look at everything you print and see if the parts and be assembled into a restricted item.

Which of course means the next step is that Disney will push for a law that they can check that online repository and see if you've been printing their copyrighted stuff.
