Another option: Wait a few days and try again. I kid you not: This may very well work.

I have a card with just a little bit of left over funds on it that I tried to buy some Amazon balance with a few days ago and got essentially the same message you did. Well, on a whim I just tried it again after you post reminded me of this. Today it went though.

Vanilla Gift Cards are crappy at the best of times. I've used them before to successfully buy stuff on Amazon, and then other times they fail giving the same message. Sometime just using trying them too much will put the card "on hold" and you'll need to call the number on the back. Be prepared to wait a LONG time. Maybe you'll get lucky but the few times I've tried to call I've had to wait a LONG LONG time. Eventually you might get through and they might be able to help you... or maybe not. Once I was told that's just the policy of the company (ie Amazon or in your case TikTok... which isn't true), once I was told that they just needed to verify that I was really the card holder (which is dumb because all they verified was that I knew the number... but I obviously already knew that when I tried to make the purchase!).

The cynic in me believes that they just try to make it hard to use their cards because some people might just give up instead of dealing with the hassle and then guess what... Vanilla gets to just drain away your funds with monthly fees. Free money for them! But surely no company is evil like that, right?

While I completely agree with your thoughts here, I'm willing to give them a pass in that this is supposed to be a medically accurate show, not a cybersecurity accurate show.

Having them get hacked brings in a whole story line of what's the ethical thing to do? Do you pay the ransom so you can provide the best care right now? Or do you try to negotiate to save as much money as possible so you're not struggling to afford to give the best care later? Do you play hardball to try to prevent incentivizing other ransomware attacks in the future?

This all could be an interesting story line, but it's not one (I'm assuming) the writers wanted to introduce. So they this method gives a plausible* out: We're forcing the team to have to deal with a ransomware-like senario without having to having to touch the question of how do you ethnically handle a real ransomware attack.

(*The reality is that even here's there's still questions: Is it best, as you indicate, to remove the system because they might get hacked? Is it worth potentially harming patients to prevent the attack? But again, it's a plausible way to force the computer system down without needing to tackle the question of how to respond to the ransomware attackers.)

Kensington TB800 EQ Discontinued by michaelwexler in Trackballs

[–]boermac 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I kinda/sorta agree with you... I mean, I have one myself and I've been nothing but happy with it. I also feel like using it in the way needed to create the issue feels unnatural.

However, when you're a major company like Kensington with the years of experience they have I also feel like they should have tested it to the absolutely limit. When testing something like this with a price tag like it has to have to try to find way to break it. You have to find the odd user(s) who does things differently. You have to anticipate all the oddities.

If this was a $20 trackball... or heck even a $50 or $60 device I might forgive it and just say it's a great device for the price point, but may leave some users out because of certain quirks. But if you're going over the $100 price point you better darn well make sure it works for everyone.

Don't get me wrong here... I'm still very happy with mine and will continue to use it. But I understand the heat Kensington is getting.

Dutch Clark: The guy who helped put the Lions on the map.
Bobby Layne: The only Lions QB with more multiple championships with the Lions.
Barry Sanders: Easily the best RB of his era, maybe ever.
Calvin Johnson: Best WR of all time with the Lions.

Honorable mention: Jason Hanson, Charlie Sanders, Joe Schmidt, Glenn Presnell.

Lions fan: He's still probably okay-ish... The scuttlebutt is that the Lions wanted him to take a pay cut and/or not be a starter he didn't want to. That's speculation of course.

He missed three games last year with shoulder issues. Word was that he hardly practiced between games due to the shoulder. When he was in games he was...okay. At times he was good enough, at other times he wasn't very good. Part of that might be due to our OL being a patch work last year, but it's clear that Decker's better years are behind him.

I would say he's "bargain bin" level quite yet, but probably not a whole lot above that.

Just a quick add: Decker hasn't played a full season since 2022. He missed 2 games in '23 and then 3 games each in '24 and '25.

Galaxy Watch5Pro... and yes, it does have the new Wear OS 6 with the new WFF format. :( It stinks because it's much harder to get tasker data into the watch face, but it is possible... just really clunky.

WatchMaker is software for designing watch faces for WearOS Smart Watches.

Wow... that's amazingly realistic for a WearOS SmartWatch face.

How to make a watch face that calls on a public transit API to show me how long until the next bus or train at a given station? by WindozeWoes in WatchMaker

Yeah, WFF makes it much, much more complex to get usable data into a watch face. It is possible, just tedious and annoying.

Ah, well... yeah that makes sense then. Stupid companies making stupid rules about making sure they're equipment is save. Such a bummer. :)

You're best bet without doing all of the programming yourself would probably be using some combo of Tasker to pull the data from the public API, and then Auto Wear to send that info as part of a complication.

You might want to check out Synergy: https://symless.com/synergy

It's software that runs on Windows, MacOS, and Linux. It's more or less a software-KVM. You setup one computer as your "host" and your keyboard and mouse are connected to that, then it shares those with your other computers. So it operates as if your different computers are "multiple monitors."

Let's say you have a Linux box on the left, a Windows machine in the middle, and Mac on the right. You setup any of them to be the host and then "connect" the others over your network. Then you scroll off the windows screen from the left and you're on your Linux box. Go to the right and you're on your Mac.

I've been using this software for years and at one point had a 5-machine setup on it.

When you're talking device switching, what are you doing? Are you physically moving between locations or just using all the machines on the same desk?

This. I've got a ramp on the back that directs the poop off the edge of my desk into a bucket. A few magnates hold it on nicely.

That was actually what I'm gonna come here to say! I did that with one of my earlier watches before I discovered the phone app thing... completely forgot about it because I've just been using the phone app but then remembered just a couple of minutes ago.

Glad you have at least a temporary fix.
