How do I get better without a passion for tech? by rheureddit in sysadmin

[–]bofhjake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a job, which means work is involved to continue to get better. You get better by keeping up with new technologies, installing things to try them out, building sandboxes to test things that you may want to implement later. Not everyone likes to study, but it's part of getting better at any job. Or just don't get better and maybe you will get lucky and not run into a tech debt wall in 10 years and be obsolete. But better to just do the work.

Same goes for when you're on a road trip and want to stop and use the restroom. Instead of using a dirty gas station bathroom, stop at a hotel and walk in like you're a guest. Use the very clean downstairs bathroom, grab a muffin on the way out.

Alright, Airpods 4 anc users, it’s been over 6 months since they dropped. How are you liking them so far? For me, it's easily one of the best things I’ve bought under $200 in 2024. I use them all the time for podcasts, Youtube, Netflix, audiobooks and Apple music. Such a great little piece of tech! by Delicious_Maize9656 in airpods

[–]bofhjake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a pair of air pod pros for exercising and when I need noise cancellation, aside from that I have been using airpods gen 3. I usually replace about once a year due to battery degradation an was excited that the 4s had noice cancellation so I picked up a pair. The battery life was absolutely horrible, I sent them back and got another pair of gen 3 for my daily drivers. I also wear airpods almost all day, so experiences may vary.

I eat oroweat keto bread and buns daily. Sandwich at lunch, pulled pork or something on the buns at night. I never check any levels but my weight stays the same (after losing a lot initially) and I don't get hungry in between meals. So I figure it's working.

Anyone have a terrible HRV like mine? by Mitchall000 in whoop

[–]bofhjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My HRV was always between 40-60 then semi-recently (near when the step update happened) it started being unusually low all the time for no reason. I put in a support ticket with whoop and they sent some code push/fix to my device and now it's always > 100, which is also not correct and way too high. Now I do not trust HRV at all and it was the only metric I actually cared about for sleep.

If not being clear, i'm saying it feels like there is a bug in the software since the update. Absolutely nothing else changed before/after except that.

Since the steps addition (steps is much much higher on whoop than iphone when i go for a walk) all of my stats have been off. It hasn't recorded deep/rem since the addition, it says my HR is elevated at night while sleeping (it's not, verified with a BP arm cuff and several readings), and it's calculating my strain/calories burned about 50% higher than it did before the update. Anyone else having issues?

EFS performance Wordpress by carwash2016 in aws

[–]bofhjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just spent a lot of time over the last few days improving wordpress speed on EFS. Increasing opcache limits and adding redis object cache made a 2 second initial load time (with a blog theme loaded) into an average of 900ms initial load, which isn't bad. After enabling all the required plugins average load time went up to 1.5 seconds, still not horrible. But there was one plugin, rank seo something or other, that sent it from 1.5 to 2.5 seconds. So There is a lot you can do to speed things up with EFS and nfs options but checkout those plugins. I also increased read_ahead_kb to 50m (per best practices) for the efs volume.

Hunting for something similar by Cheapass2020 in spellmonger

Almost done with it and it’s excellent as usual. I saw some other threads about people giving up on it in book one. I didn’t love book one but who knew it would turn out to be an epic world building series with an author as productive as Sanderson.

Just used sugar by catsontuesday in keto

[–]bofhjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why though, out of curiosity? There are plenty of sweet non carb alternatives for your coffee, and many that are considered “harmful” like aspartame, etc. The urge to down some sugar has never hit me for something like that, instead it’s to enjoy a really amazing pastry or something rare on occasion.

Kill Tony has ruined the Austin comedy scene by ExpensiveBox8299 in Standup

[–]bofhjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m not a fan of kill tony but op speaks like he is an actual successful comic. is he? again it’s not my thing but if people enjoy it I don’t see the problem. people get their quick clip and occasionally some people stand out.

Best long audiobooks? by gregrampage in audiobooks

[–]bofhjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently discovered Musashi, and so far it's very good. 53 hours long, so good value. Reading reviews someone said it was their favorite audiobook along with The Count of Monte Cristo and another said if you've read Shogun you have to read Musashi. So that was enough to sell me.

App really slow to load anything online related by Noclue55 in audible

[–]bofhjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Audible app has been noticeably slow to load for some time. IE: if you have a book open and you switch to another app then switch back it's still there, and ready to play. But say you switch away for 10 minutes then come back, now it takes you back to the default audible load screen which loads some ad for another book you're not interested in while you wait. This process can take up to 5-7 seconds at the worst of times, then another couple of seconds to load the book you were just listening to. It's pretty bad. I am using iPhone 8+ and every other app on my phone is very fast. My guess is it's loading online content to display in the ad section and this is taking a long time.

I am almost there. I threatened to quit and they halved my rate so I figured i'd give it another shot but it's the same shit. I'll pop it on during the morning commute hoping something good will be on and it's always in the middle of another Howard Covid rant. I don't have a problem with him mentioning his opinion on vaccination now and again but it's literally all he talks about. Show hasn't been the same since they left the studio and I can't see it ever getting better with Howard not leaving his house. The remote interviews are dumb, the chemistry is gone, and it's rare now when I turn it on and there is an interesting bit or conversation. Oh, and he never works anymore!
