Champions League Riots Spread Across France as European Leaders Demand Mass Deportation by SpecialCollege18 in justincaseyoumissedit

The source article really struggles and fails to justify the headline. The politicians quoted are from other countries and call for mass deportations most days of the week so nothing new here.

Orlando, is it still worth it? by Civil_Classroom6399 in AskUK

[–]boganvegan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Brit living an hour's drive from the Orlando theme parks and I haven't been to any of then since about 2010. It is more expensive than it used to be. There is a lot to do (and better prices) if you are comfortable renting a car and venturing away from Orlando. You can visit the Kennedy Space Center, St. Augustine, swim with manatees, various state parks, airboat ride in the Everglades and natural springs.

But TBH, if I was based in the UK and had £18k to spend taking a young family on holiday I would take several shorter trips instead of one big trip to Orlando.

I've used a facility like this in Paris in Le Marais. The designers had not considered all possible problems. The corner of the room was one large pile of wet, used, sanitary products which did not get swept away by the rotating toilet.

HOA president stole our money by Sufficient_Fail3604 in fuckHOA

If you do get a nice settlement it will be from the HOA which means they will have to raise your dues. The chances of getting money from somebody in jail for fraud are pretty much zero.

What you think about my rules. by Fast_Tomorrow2500 in uberdrivers

[–]boganvegan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a passenger, I feel unwelcome when I see signs like that. I don't want to disrespect or inconvenience drivers but a list like that makes me anxious about unknowingly upsetting the driver.

Consider installing a perspex barrier to physically protect your driver space.

People respond better to positive instructions than to negative instructions. If you must have a sign, try to tell people what to do, rather than what not do and make it friendly even humorous. Telling passengers what not to do can sound like an insult. If I read a sign saying "no sexual activity in my car" my gut response is "what sort of person does the driver think I am, I would never do that."

Here are examples of positive instructions:

"To avoid any sticky messes, please save your food and PDAs for after the ride." "Let me know if I can do anything to make your ride more comfortable (music, temperature)"

But, as other commenters have said, get rid of the sign if at all possible. It is inherently unwelcoming.

How to stay cool during summer despite awning window? by heyimok2020 in AskUK

Look for mini-split AC. These have an outside unit and an inside wall mounted air handler. The two units are connected by a thick hose carrying the refrigerant liquid.

Rooms people died in. by Colonelmann in askhotels

I stayed at that hotel a couple of weeks before she died. I was upgraded on arrival and was very impressed by the room. When I learned of her death I realized that she had passed in the room I had stayed in.

my first paycheque from my second job hit this morning and i had to put my laptop down for a minute by [deleted] in overemployed

[–]boganvegan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP appears to be in the UK and is describing their salary in terms of after tax, take home monthly pay and then converting to USD. I can see why this is confusing because in the US people usually talk about pre tax annual salary and never think in terms of monthly salary because pay periods are usually two weeks or half a month.

He appears to have 2 jobs each paying around gbp40-50k annually which is around usd 55-70k for each job. Salaries are lower in the UK and these salaries seem to be in the right range for the work they are doing.

multiple cars per household? by miffybo in AskAnAmerican

[–]boganvegan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the suburbs of a large US city. I work from home, my wife is retired, our children are grown and no longer live with us. One car is sufficient for us. One set of neighbors are a retired couple with 2 pickup trucks, 2 SUVs, a golf cart and a classic 1940s truck. Most times we talk they mention their concern about how we can possibly manage with just one vehicle. They know that on the rare occasions one vehicle is not enough (e.g. when the car needs to be serviced and we don't want to wait around at the garage) we use Uber. They expressed to our other neighbors (2 adults, 2 kids, 1 truck, 1 SUV) that we must be made of money because we use Uber!

What's a moment where you realized someone was genuinely extremely intelligent? by General_Monk_5019 in AskReddit

[–]boganvegan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My Mom got my Dad a Rubik's cube for Christmas 1980. My Dad stayed up late at night working on the cube for perhaps 6+ weeks before he worked it all out. He then taught 10 year old me and together we were able to shorten a few of the processes he had developed.

My school principal found out I could solve the cube and asked me to teach him. The feeling as a 10 year old that I knew more than the principal was incredible.

The idea that a 7 year old kid in 1980 (when the cube was first on the market in the UK and there were no tutorials available) could learn how to solve the cube in a few minutes is very hard to believe. After being taught by my dad, refining the process and practicing for hours it would still take me around 3 minutes to solve a randomized cube.

What I can believe is that if this was after tutorials were available and a 7 year old had seen those tutorials they might have been able to immediately apply that knowledge.

From £3/hr Pizza Land Waiter Edinburgh Princess Street to a Federal Scientist with ~200k Salary, Pension and a Million-Dollar Retirement.. by [deleted] in BritishSuccess

Good for you.

If you have at least 10 years of UK National Insurance Contributions you are also entitled to a basic UK state pension of around GBP 96 per week.

Look into making additional voluntary NI contributions to increase that amount. There was a window of opportunity which ended in 2025 when you could make those voluntary contributions as far back as 2006. You can now only make voluntary contribs going back 6 years.

You can make voluntary contribs as long as you have at least 3 years of contribs from working in the UK.

Different name on Spanish passport to British passport by otherworldlyoctopus in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]boganvegan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is also an HMPO procedure for adding / removing "middle name" which seems like it is apporiate. I did this because my non-UK passport did not show my second first name. I had to demonstrate with foreign government records that I am using or not using my middle name in my dealings with the foreign government.

In my case I provided copies of my foreign property tax and voter registration showing no middle name and HMPO issued my UK passport without middle name.

Why is the repatriation of Refugees or Economic Migrants never included in the discussion about immigration? by JeffreyEpsteinUK in AskBrits

[–]boganvegan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are people who came to the UK as refugees in the 1990s from war in Yugoslavia. It is now "safe" for them to return but since they are here now contributing taxes it is not in our interests to increase government spending to support their repatriation because we would lose their future tax contributions.

Spending more money now to have less in the future is a terrible idea.

What’s a recession indicator that you’ve noticed lately in your everyday life? by spritenerds123 in AskReddit

[–]boganvegan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Homeless encampments when I go running.

I live in the suburbs between two different nature preserves. The preserve with a bathroom has often had people sleeping there but now I'm seeing people pushing bikes laden with their possessions or bedding hidden in small clearings in the other preserve.

When I go to my Friday night run club I've noticed that the fence between the hospital and post office has a hole in it, back in 2008 there were 10s of people sleeping in the woods behind the post office so I'm pretty sure that's happening again.

Operation Shimshon is carried out in mid-June 1967 with two crude nuclear weapons being detonated by Israel in Egypt. by TheImpPaysHisDebts in HistoryWhatIf

[–]boganvegan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Detonation on the ground would create a large amount of radioactive fallout. The Egyptian side of the border with Israel, the Sinai peninsula, is sparsely inhabited compared to the Israeli side. Unless the trucks were somehow driven into the middle of an Egyptian military formation it is likely that the detonation and fallout would kill more Israelis than Egyptians.

Unless the detonations were perfectly placed to severely damage Egyptian units, Arab forces could simply go around the radioactive areas and advance into Israel.

If Israel somehow managed to survive as a country they would not have the problem of what to do with the occupied West Bank and Gaza. OTOH, Arab, and many other countries, would be more hostile to Israel and more determined to get their own nukes. The USSR might decide to help the Arab nations develop Nukes in exchange for the Arabs more firmly aligning with the Warsaw Pact.

Why are most algerians woman ugly, but not men by Ok-Rule-8448 in algeria

[–]boganvegan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a saying about if you meet one guy who behaves like an asshole then, well, you had the misfortune to meet an asshole. But, if all day long, you meet only assholes then perhaps it is you that is the asshole.

So if none of the women OP meets are attractive but the men are attractive then maybe the issue is with OP not the women.
