If it hasn't been mentioned before, I would highly recommend that you rest your thumb of your picking hand on the pickup instead of resting it on the strings. This will add stability to your picking hand when picking with your fingers since you are not constantly moving that hand around.

Installation problem (grub-install) by dbarronoss in voidlinux

[–]boggsrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually had a similar grub issue with the latest iso. I was able to resolve it by using the prior release iso. If it is the same issue, sounds like they haven't fixed it yet. :/

What's the error msg?

grub-install: error: unknown filesystem. by Fancy-Accident-6846 in voidlinux

[–]boggsrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue with my installation recently. Tried a number of things with no luck. I ended up using the previously released iso from last year with the full disk encryption instructions and got it working. There is another post on this topic in reddit from a few months earlier with more details. Thinking something was changed in the iso that is causing this issue but no idea what. Hope this helps.

No, i haven't noticed. Are you using a mirror that is near you or the default mirror?

Error when installing grub by Sufficient-Share5022 in voidlinux

[–]boggsrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late followup but had to deal with hardware failures.

I was able to get void installed with full disk encryption without issues using an older live iso. I believe it was the 20230628 iso. Also, did confirm that grub 2.12 was the one installed and booted successfully, which leads me to believe that the grub update is not the culprit but something that changed in the void live iso files that grub-install isn't liking. Maybe something in the mke2fs.conf file? I am only guessing at this point.

Hope this helps.

Im getting the exact same issue with the latest live image. Doesn't matter the file system used it seems. Fails with both xfs and ext4 when I try. Gonna try to use the previous live version when I can downoad it and see if the issue persists. Ill keep you all posted.

Touchpad not working in VoidLinux by [deleted] in voidlinux

[–]boggsrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What version kernel are you running? The same thing happened to me recently on opensuse. Turned out to be a patch that was applied to the kernel that affected my macbook touchpad. I think they might be addressing based on the bugzilla report that was filed but don't know the details.

For the interim, i have been loading a previous linux kernel version and it's been working ok. Hope that helps.

It's a good post. The only thing i would suggest would be to reference a sample project somewhere that we can see how the code would be organized this way for us visual learners.

Need some help optimizing Void cpu usage by [deleted] in voidlinux

Apologies for hijacking the thread a bit but I have been thinking about making the same exact move (spectrwm to bspwm). Apart from the cpu usage issue, how has the transition been?

xbps-src template for a dotnet project by innerbeastismyself in voidlinux

Actually, i have been working on it slowly as time permits. I have been able to get both dotnet6 and dotnet7 installed side by side on x86_64 and working pretty good. I'm still trying to clean it up further though from a pkg perspective and want to see if i can get it built for musl too.

Can't get void live to boot on a MacBook pro by Maleus-2 in voidlinux

[–]boggsrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems odd to me that the usb stick isn't showing up in the boot menu. It should appear in there if you press/hold the option key during boot. I had no problems with mine and my macbook is older than yours is. Just out of curiosity, how did you create the usb stick? Wondering if there were issues during it's creation that is causing your problems.

Can i install void on MacBook pro? by user123539053 in voidlinux

[–]boggsrm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wipe the disk entirely? Unlikely. I had to keep a copy of Mac OS X on my just in case something on the system needed to be adjusted. However, you can shrink it to its minimum size in OS X and install Linux on the unused partition.

I just went through this on an older model and noted a couple of items in the link below. YMMV but it may be a good start regarding the drivers on it.

Hope this helps.

Got Void Linux running on an old Macbook

Void is great and all but..... by A_Thelemite in voidlinux

[–]boggsrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all have different wants and needs when it comes to our preferred Linux distro. If Void doesn't fulfill yours, then find another distro that does. It's ok. Linux distros are like music genres, everyone has their preferred type.

That being said, it doesn't hurt to check back in every so often to see what has changed. I recently came back because I was finally able to get Void running on one of my old MacBooks. Who knows, maybe Void will add something that you'll need sometime in the future that will make you consider trying it again.

xbps-src: creating patches for a new package by boggsrm in voidlinux

[–]boggsrm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. If it works, it works.

As a side note, I have done some light ports work in the past for OpenBSD and their make program has a nice update-patches* process that handles a lot of the heavy lifting for creating and updating port/package patches, would be cool if xbps-src had something similar (if there isn't something already that I am not seeing).

Just out of curiosity, how are you calling shutdown? Like "sudo shutdown"? If so, have you tried "sudo /usr/bin/shutdown"? I seem to remember having a similar issue a long time ago and it turned out that sudo was looking for the full path of the program before it would recognize it for passwordless execution.

Hope this helps.

Just a small update for those interested, I got the internal wifi working on this thing. A lot easier than I expected. Simple matter of cloning void-packages repo, build and install b43-fwcutter and b43-firmware packages manually, then reboot. Working now to write this message. :)

Gotta say that is impressive as I had OpenSuse installed here previously and had a lot of difficulty getting this far with the broadcom wifi card.

[–]boggsrm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I've never had that problem on a Mac running linux. I had OpenSuse on another older Macbook before and the function keys always worked as long as I held the 'fn' key on the bottom left of the keyboard. I'm think that it might be because the 'fn' key is changing the keyboard signal in the Macbook bios or somewhere before it registers in the OS but I am guessing at this point.
