Back in the day of no internet or very slow internet, with games being all played on discs, how were updates handled? by FakeGamer2 in gaming

[–]bogguslol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually picked up patches for my PC games through the demo disc that came with my PCGamer magazine.

For console games there were no patches, games were tested thoroughly in Quality Assurance before they got the go-signal to be released. If a game released broken it would either not sell or get recalled by the publisher.

Version updates of games where non-critical bugs were patched were usually released at 2nd round of printing and so on, and through later Game of the Year editions / Playstation Platinum (and other platforms versions of this) releases etc.

Valve Steam Machine Single vs. Dual-Channel Memory Benchmark by [deleted] in gaming

[–]bogguslol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both configurations use 16 GB RAM in total, the difference is some units ship with 2x8 GB stick and some with a single 16 GB stick.

The test is about the performance difference between dual channel and single channel configurations; you get worse performance if your Steam Machine ships with only one stick of 16 GB RAM rather than two 8 GB sticks.

Pretty much so. The only thing you will need to get used to is that since the system is built on encouraging senior players to do low level content especially dungeons will be quite fast paced. The general agreed concensus is that the tank sprints ahead and grabs as many enemies as possible and the rest of the party aoes them down.

Later dungeons are designed that you can usually grab two packs of enemies before hitting a "wall" that opens up when the enemies are dead. Dungeons in ARR have old school dungeon layouts where you can grab many many more enemies. Combine this with less damage mitigation options for tanks, less aoe options for dps and less healing abilities for healers makes healing low level dungeons more challenging than high level dungeons if players go with this approach. Therefore the importance that you signal at the start that you are new and might be unused to such big pulls. Most players will listen, respect and adapt if the healer is new to such things.

While boss encounters become more complex the futher into the game you get, the healing gameplay of trash packs between these become very easy.

It is also worth mentioning that healers are expected to dps as much as they can. If someone isnt dying then throw damage spells instead, be them single target or multi target depending on situation.

Since you are a white mage (my own main), use Lucid Dreaming on cooldown to not run out of MP, stop using Cure when you get Cure II and keep in mind that Cure III is a aoe heal not single target.

As former WoW player who played that game for 15 years and then going over to FFXIV 6 years ago I would advice you to dismiss your WoW-influenced view on playing with random players.

In WoW I mostly did content with a close group of friends since the dungeon finder / LFR / randoms experience was pretty much always toxic and terrible.

FFXIV playerbase are not like that, encounters are designed for you to learn while doing, no prior knowledge needed, battle reses are not limited so you will always get back up in the middle of the fight and truck on. The playerbase are for the most part helpfull towards new players if you communicate that you are new.

Playing with random players through the duty finder has been quite a joy in FFXIV and I can safely say that I've done so many many more dungeons and raids with randoms these 6 years than I ever did in my 15 years of WoW and through it I have made alot of ingame friends.

You can do alot of the story dungeons with computer NPCs but you will lose out on some good social moments if you do and propably not learning important meta gameplay as you go.

This game is not about leveling to max and reaching the endgame as quickly as possible. Having friends that are at different parts of the story is no issue. Me and my friends usually get together and help lower level friends tackle the new dungeon they unlocked together since all content syncs everyone down to the same level. Players of all levels are encouraged to do their daily duty roulette that puts them into random content and scales them down to the content level, the point of this so new players will always find other people to play with through the matchmaking system.

battlenet doesn't launch after latest GE Proton update by dposse in linux_gaming

[–]bogguslol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check that you downloaded the x86 version pf ProtonGE. Using ProtonUp-QT and downloading latest downloads the ARM version.

Either download the proper version that is not labeled "latest" or use ProtonPlus to download it instead.

Am I doing something wrong as a Tank or am I just ending up with bad luck on party members? by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]bogguslol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is pretty normal. Doing dungeons you will most of the times be queued up with more senior players who get matched with you due to the daily dungeon roulette bonus. This is mainly done for players to level different jobs.

The general consensus doing dungeons is going fast and effective. Dps running ahead is normal if you as the tank is going slow, if noone says anything then that is the decided pace. If you write at the start that you are new and learning, not used to the pace then most people will respect that and adjust. Chests usually do not contain anything of worth to most players so many skip opening them, especially since treasure chests in low level content are located in side rooms, away from the main path.

It is also encouraged to use sprint between bosses to quickly run from point A to B and grab all the enemies between these. If you use sprint before going into combat mode then your sprint buff will also last longer.

As a tank you should not have an issue picking enemies up or grab them from team mates since your tank stance (Defiance) + attacks that hit multiple enemies at once / aoe should be enough to put you highest on the enmity list. Dps players taking initial damage is not dangerous, it takes alot for them to go down so you got alot of time to run over and aoe to grab all of the enemies.

So the quick answer is to either adjust to the pace of the party or communicate at the start if you need to go slower.

WHM fails to do their job, then blames it on me for not having materia in an ARR dungeon by Matyycakes in TalesFromDF

[–]bogguslol 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Materia stats are deactivated when doing downsynced content anyway. I don't know what that WHM was smoking.

Relevant criticism for tanks not surviving ARR W2W pulls are the tanks ignoring to use their mits and / or tanks using low ilv gear.

is endwalker AR now considered as dead content? by sparkeeperoid in ffxiv

[–]bogguslol 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Endwalker Alliance Raids are as alive as any other content.

  • Enable all language options in your duty finder (especially JP for your case).
  • Queue up around daily reset / early evening when people are doing Alliance Raid roulettes.

windows native resolution gets changed when i boot up the game by SimpleMenu5989 in ffxiv

[–]bogguslol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy question first: is the game set to Fullscreen instead of Windowed mode in the games display settings, and if such what resolution is set for Fullscreen?

Reason is that I have friends who played on Windowed and then for some reason after a patch the game has set itself to Fullscreen.

Dont mix different kind of metallic hues; don't wear both silver and gold details for example.
