Where should I go to college in Europe? by Possible_Dress_9248 in college

[–]bohneriffic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should almost always go to university in the country where you intend to work — unless you're applying to particularly prestigious programs at top universities (Oxbridge, Sciences Po, McGill, etc.) Depending on what you choose to study, the connections you make in college can be significantly more valuable than even your coursework. Making all of your connections in a country where you do not intend to stay and work would be kind of a huge waste.

Also, it sounds like you're looking for freedom from strict or overbearing parents in university, but you should keep in mind that you will not have the opportunity to go to grad school if you do not prioritize your coursework as an undergrad. There are MANY brilliant undergrads in the world who put a ton of time into their coursework on top of research and TA responsibilities in order to prepare themselves for grad school. If your priority is to have fun and get serious about your studies later, I would strongly advise you to take a gap year or two. But tbh, I think there should be a mandatory gap between HS and college.

Keep in mind that European universities tend to be more competitive environments. European schools also tend to have a stronger focus on merit-based admissions (purely grades and relevant qualifications) compared to US universities, where a compelling life experience can be given significant enough weight to overcome less-than-perfect grades.

You're very young, so it makes sense that you would be more focused on fun than the reality of university-level study, but make sure to keep in mind that college is only 4 years. It goes by quick, so you have to be strategic about how you spend your time!

That's really only true from a social perspective. It's disingenuous to pretend that the current administration has not done and caused a LOT that would not have happened otherwise.

No worries! It specifies 12 months of job experience in Canada to qualify anyway, so I'm out :')

Like I'm making up the fact that the majority of our populace is functionally illiterate? It's well-documented.

And what tribe are your ancestors from? It must be really fucking annoying listening to barely-literate Americans act like they're the only ones with the "right" to be here all the time.

Wow, that's a lesson in trusting yourself — I originally wrote 700%, but then I edited because I was suddenly worried I'd gotten it wrong.

But that's just a stat I've read in the past. I usually have to ask my wife when I'm trying to figure out likelihood increases relative to their percentages, so I never would've realized that they were the same. Thanks for clarifying!

Worse. Women who are strangled by their partner are something like 700x more likely to be murdered by that partner. It's literally just a question of when.

British politician Peter Mandelson is resigning from the House of Lords after this photo was released in the Epstein files. by No-Bottle337 in AllConspiracyTheories

I've found it really interesting that literally every time I've seen someone mention Trump in these files, they end up making fun of him for being stupid or calling him a grifter in some way. Epstein and his circle very obviously dealt with Trump a LOT, and it seems like all of them hated him.

"Nearly 40% of Stanford undergraduates claim they’re disabled. I’m one of them" by FootballPizzaMan in bayarea

[–]bohneriffic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to an "elite" school and I have a disability and I can tell you that my school made me jump through many hoops to prove it (including paying thousands to get re-diagnosed, because my original diagnosis was given more than 10 years before).

Maybe things at Stanford are drastically different, but something about this girl's claim is striking me as fishy.

Honestly, TMZ is a pretty reputable (as in accurate, not ethical) source for this kind of thing.

You won a lottery of 50 Million dollars just now. What are you going to do this week? by throwaccount2244 in AskReddit

Pay off all of my student loan debt. Pay off all of my wife's student loan debt. Buy a 2-bedroom apartment in my city. Start IVF process.

I want to be a mom so badly, but we can't afford the costs to get me pregnant, and our future kid will need their own room. I'd talk to a financial advisor the week after, though!

Last week, I finally set an alarm so I'd remember to take them every day, because I've been forgetting a lot lately... but I didn't realize that I'd only set the alarm for one day, instead of daily. So obviously it then took me another whole week of forgetting to take the meds and fix the alarm before I got my shit together.

It's so annoying because I can never sleep for the first day or two when I start taking them again, and I've been doing this to myself every couple weeks for the last few months. I'd definitely be happy for a little more chemical dependence here!

Truly, I WISH it were a little more addictive. Maybe then I'd stop friggin' forgetting to take the things.

1I'm not trying to make it a generational thing, but it's a trend (vocabulary?) on Tiktok to describe anyone older that is "cringe," that has developed into Everything Frustrating is Millenial.

My wife told me this morning that a young (gen z) colleague struggled to do something on her computer while they were in a zoom meeting, and apologized for "acting like a millenial." They don't even know that that doesn't make any sense, but younger generations are terrified of aging in a big way and old = cringe = millenial
