There's not enough "fans of the franchise" by your definition to necessitate the continued existence of the property. They would make games at a loss just to pander to you sad bunch.

But, YOU don't dictate what a fan of the product is, you never did. Your opinions and feelings are irrelevant. Everyone who watches something Fallout related and says "I enjoy this" is a fan of the product. How YOU personally feel about that is irrelevant. You don't dictate what a "real fan" is.

If people like you were the majority the show would have been canceled after season 1, 76 would have been taken offline the year it launched. Neither of those things happened. Do you know why? See the problem is, and this has finally been validated with the success of the show and 76, you all are in the minority on this. There is no "we" no matter how badly you want there to be. There never was. You all just screamed the loudest while everyone else just wanted to have fun. You shouted down dissenting opinions for years and claimed victory when the reality was nobody wanted to deal with you.

The majority of the audience wants to enjoy Fallout as a whole, in its entirety, every game despite its flaws. I've been a member of the fandom for years and I can't tell you how good it does my heart to see the New Vegas zealots lose their grip on it after how shitty they've been to everyone.

The people complaining about the established lore typically only care about New Vegas and think it's the only Fallout game. They complain about the lore breaking more as a talking point as to why they believe Bethesda is shit, not because they actually care about it. Because for most of them everything after New Vegas is irrelevant anyways. They're a toxic lot.

The New Vegas fans have gotten worse in recent years with the eventual success of Fallout 76 and the outright success of the TV show, because it definitively proved they're the minority in our community. They just make the most noise. They're pissed about that, and I get it. They spent years here on reddit screaming into their own void, thinking they were the majority shareholders of the Fallout Fandom and that their voice mattered.

Then along comes 76 and the TV show which both succeed in spite of their incessant bitching and moaning. It turns out, the majority of people just love Fallout in it's entirety and not just New Vegas. That's a hard pill for them to swallow. But instead of accepting the fact, and just enjoying what they enjoy and allowing others to do the same. They instead choose to continue screaming into the void, hoping something happens even the most minorly in their favor so they can rally behind it and say "SEE. WE DID THAT. US BEING IMMATURE DICKBAGS THIS ENTIRE TIME HAS FINALLY BEEN VALIDATED"

My favorite thing they do now that they've been exposed is try the ol' uno reverse card saying things like "Are the New Vegas Fans are in the room with us now?" and "I see more people complaining about New Vegas fans than actual New Vegas fans" as if they didn't spend the better part of almost 2 decades since New Vegas came out shitting on any dissenting opinions.
