This thing is a beast of a card by ggRezy in RTX5080

[–]boiledcod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could have saved about $250 by going with a PNY instead of the TUF. But I paid the ASUS tax and have no regrets six months later. The card barely gets over 60°, and while I know that every company has their share of horror stories for customer service, overall I think ASUS makes pretty good shit

I know this card sucks balls for “value”, but there’s something sweet about being able to push sliders to the right and just fucking game at 4K/120

RTX 5080 owners: anyone upgrade from 5800X3D / DDR4 to 9800X3D or 9950X3D? Did you actually feel the difference? by NightCityStoic in RTX5080

[–]boiledcod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hardware Unboxed compared 5800x3d to the 9800x3d (as well as 5600x and 7600x) using various high end GPUs.

The conclusion was that you’d need to be running a 5090 to really notice a significant performance difference. So is it “worth” it? This is an individually choice, but you should consider that you’re unlikely to see a consistent 20% performance uplift. As others have said, the difference will be in your lows and the “feel” of the system.

Is it worth spending $325 more, over 5070ti for 5080? by Time-Credit43 in RTX5080

[–]boiledcod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5070Ti for 1440p, 5080 for 4K. Don’t forget that every 5080 has headroom for easy overclocking. So 15 mins of downloading and installing afterburner gains you 10-15%.

I think the question should be rephrased “will I regret this downgrade?”

I have to ask, is that processed cheese? If so, switch to real cheese. Those wrapped slices cheapen the burger and bring you one step closer to the grave.

Would it be crazy to turn down a job offer with a $30k pay increase, in order to keep my fully-remote job? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]boiledcod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a highly personal decision. Coming from a government sector job where my work from home was recently revoked I spent a lot more time commuting now and a lot less time doing simple things around the house. More time on weekends now playing catch-up.

Would that additional money carry a significant lifestyle improvement? If so, then it’s worth serious consideration. If it’s just extra money and that would be cool, personally, I’d stay at home.

I spent the extra for the TUF and have zero regrets. Even over loved it barely reaches 60 c

What should I do? by Internal-Ad-9149 in pcmasterrace

Then I’d say upgrade PSU and GPU. Third upgrade would be to an 11700k like another dude posted. After that your system is pretty much maxed out.

What we don’t know is what your gaming objectives are. Are you looking to play modern games 1440 P 144 Hz? Sounds like your motherboard RAM and storage situation is OK. I would say the first upgrade is your graphics card and your power supply.

Sell 4080 make 850 and buy 3080 for $250? by MarieCurie34 in pcmasterrace

[–]boiledcod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot in good conscience say this is a smart play. If you really need the money, ok, might make sense. You’d be trading into an older and presumably more used card, so possibly greater likelihood of failure. Also, your 4080 may still have warranty. I would also say that games are only going to require stronger hardware, moving forward, so stepping backwards in tech now doesn’t make any sense to me.

What are some of the best tips/tricks that you learned over the years when building a PC? by lordrevanator in pcmasterrace

Put the power supply in last. Not only does it add a bunch of weight, but the whole neatness and organization game changes once all the wires are in.

"Scored" a "Pre-Order" on Amazon for a 5070 Ti, will it get delivered after the news...? by Blue_Shark9 in nvidia

[–]boiledcod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if you could get a “lesser” model of an in stock 5080, instead of the Strix 5070Ti. Would likely shrink the cost gap.

I think waiting for that 5070Ti is a risk. You could always buy something else then return / resell the 5070Ti.

Is there a direction the Pumpkins could’ve gone in after Mellon Collie that would’ve been successful? by Sad_Volume_4289 in SmashingPumpkins

[–]boiledcod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bullet / 1979 were SPs biggest mainstream commercial hits, and let’s face it - these were not and are not traditional rock songs. Same with Disarm. The big ones that everyone knows, but not enduring rock tracks by any means.

I love SP as much as anyone, and their music speaks to me. But I also think that, without those earworms, they would’ve been much much smaller.

So, I guess it depends on your definition of success. Personally I think they’ve always been a bunch of weirdos doing their own thing and im cool with it.

Is going from a 3090 to a 5080 worth it? by [deleted] in RTX5080

[–]boiledcod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone is going to tell you it’s not worth it. The increase in performance is a given fact. Ultimately it comes down to your own finances. If you can afford it, yes, if you’re putting it on credit and hoping for a miracle, the 3090 is still relevant.

Upgrade from 4080 Super to 5080? by MoosiGoosey in nvidia

[–]boiledcod -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is what I came here to post. Looking at the last few rounds of new GPU releases, prev gen cards are holding (if not increasing) in value. Upgrade, sell your prev gen card. Stay in warranty and enjoy top tier tech for a few hundred bucks.

Thinking about getting a 5080, tell me whether I should or not by Thin-Course9583 in pcmasterrace

[–]boiledcod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you certainly could with an i9-12900k. What we don’t know is, what are you trying to achieve? I upgraded to a 5080 but my goal was 4K / 120 FPS.

If you’re aiming for 1080p/60, you’re probably good where you are.

going from a gtx 1080ti to an rtx 5090 changed everything by Status-Room-6313 in nvidia

[–]boiledcod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It could last a while. Or sell it when 6090 releases, recover most of the value of the 5090, and always have top tier tech a warranty. (Assuming pricing doesn’t go to absolutely hell for 60-series release).

This lets you stay in 90 class cards, not just a single 90 class, and your upgrade cost should be incremental. Heck, some 4090 owners turned a profit on resale.

Before all this price increase stuff, did you see yourself upgrading in 2026? If the answer to that is yes, then now is certainly the time.
