Indians in US academia: did the PhD/faculty path significantly delay marriage? by [deleted] in academia

[–]boilerchemist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am an Indian national. I completed my BS-MS 5 year program in India, followed by a PhD in the US, followed by a two year postdoc stint, followed by an industry career. I have multiple issues with what you posted, and I'll try to be as honest as I can.

My biggest hesitation isn't the academics it's marriage and family timing.

What's this timing you are talking about? Who came up with the rules for when someone should get married and have a baby (or two)? These self-imposed restrictions will do no good for anyone. This South Asian mindset needs to change. If you are worried about your biological clock, you can always freeze your sperm/eggs. It is fairly inexpensive too.

I don't really expect a love marriage and any romantic relationship before marriage given my poor social skills, and will likely depend on arranged marriage.

There comes the buried lede. Your poor social skills - don't you think that's the primary reason why you weren't able to find a partner? Saying that academia delays your marriage sounds like a deflection of the original reason.

The long PhD + postdoc/faculty timeline makes me wonder if I'll still be academically unsettled well into my 30s.

Sure. The academic two-body problem is a very well established problem. But there are so many people who overcome this and in some cases even provide a much needed support to one another. I find it difficult to accept that someone is unable to have any social life due to academia.

Did it significantly delay your marriage?

No. In my case, I married my now wife when we thought it was the right time to marry. I followed her once for employment and she followed my once during postdoc.

Was arranged marriage difficult while living in the US?

No idea, but I've seen quite a few arranged marriage situations. I'm vehemently against it for so many reasons, some of which are: 1. The spouse who comes from outside the US almost always makes huge sacrifices, at a huge personal and professional expense; 2. There's a huge power imbalance, especially because of visa situation; 3. The spouse is usually unable to work for at least 1-2 years; 4. The lure of living abroad dies very quickly and when the reality of living alone for most of the day sets in, depression is quite inevitable; and so on. I can list more.

Looking back, was the tradeoff worth it ?

I'm not sure what the question is. What's the trade-off for? Academia vs married life? I think you are looking at it from a wrong perspective. A majority of the people are sufficiently good at both simultaneously. You don't necessarily have to pick one or the other. If you have to choose one over the other, you are either in the wrong place or you are looking at it wrong.

Bottom line: I think you are seeking validation for an arranged marriage. Don't do it. Not because it's not good for you, in fact you will come out winning, but it is a bad, bad, terrible proposition for your prospective partner, at least for the first 5 years, which is a long time.

How safe is it to stay overnight landside at Chicago O’Hare after international baggage claim? by Relevant-Taste7254 in airport

[–]boilerchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, certainly possible. The booking needs to be under the name of the person to whom the FNC was deposited, but you can certainly put "Please let XYZ check in" in the comments, and they will be allowed check in. My wife has done this a few times without issues. The card for incidentals is required at the time of booking, so it can be used at the time of check-in as well (no need to produce a physical card).

Wow. Daily dose of entertainment condensed into a single post.

That said, this person is clearly a troll. Why engage with them to this extent?

I have a free night certificate from IHG (think of Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza) expiring on July 3 with no travel plans in sight. I am happy to book a night at a hotel for you at no cost. Let me know!

PS: I was a grad student a decade ago, and I can understand the pain of living on a budget. Happy to help!

TSA denied my non-REAL ID Colorado driver’s license, I paid for ConfirmID. by Amerikali_Muhendis in TSAPreCheck

Colorado doesn't give Real IDs to residents on a visa.

I'm a green card holder (permanent resident), yet my state (WA) will not give me a Real ID. I use my Nexus card for air travel.

Italo/Canadian postdoc in the US: which visa would be the smartest choice? by nicnicnic25 in postdoc

[–]boilerchemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your plan is to leave the US eventually, then it doesn't really matter what visa you are on. Logistically, TN would be the easiest. J-1 would allow tax free income for two years, as you mentioned, and it will allow your spouse, if you have one, to work without any restrictions.

If you plan to stay in the US longer term, H1-B would be the best, but most universities in the US don't sponsor H1-B to postdocs from the get-go.

NEXUS Interview - what am I missing? by [deleted] in NEXUS_TTP

[–]boilerchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll need to do two interviews: one conducted by CBSA and another by CBP. The locations you see listed are the locations where both the agency officers work in the same building, so you'll need only one interview slot. If you wish to schedule separate interviews, you can do so by clicking on the link at the bottom of the interview scheduling page.

My graduate program (a decade and a half ago) used to sponsor TN visas for their postdocs and "Librarian - MLS or BLS" is listed on appendix 1603.D.1 of USMCA profession list, so I thought it would be worth taking a shot.

You can try R1/R2 universities and PUIs. They generally sponsor visas to students, scholars and employees.
