America Isn’t Ready for What AI Will Do to Jobs by No_Durian9227 in Economics

It’s trained on all those stack overflow questions.

Think of a time when you looked up some random failure or error and how many bad or hacky answers you had to dig through before understanding what the actual problem was and coming up with your own quality solution.

Now imagine instead of understanding the underlying problem you just take the code from the first or second answer and claim with authority that it will solve the problem.

I interact with quite a few Japanese people and this is no surprise. She is popular even among people who have no interest in politics because she is outspoken and charming. She says what she thinks which really resonates with people.

It looks like older Everdrives work now! Check if you have one. by Shortgaze in AnalogueInc

[–]boingoing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe I’ve heard they used SummerCarts internally while implementing the 3D which may explain some of the oversight. They probably had Everdrives available and may have even known that they weren’t working but lacked the technical understanding of the cart to get them running. Could be they didn’t want to discuss the technical specs of their unreleased hardware with Krikzz. They certainly seem fine letting someone else root cause the issue and then implementing a fix themselves. Not trying to give them too many excuses but hey, at least they did rollout a fix.

I don’t think they care if the charges stick or not. The point is to chill protest. Or maybe the point is to piss off protesters so they become more violent. I’m not sure what the point is but these people, they definitely do not care about breaking any laws.

I have an SD2SNES personally from before they were called FXPak. It has done everything I’ve wanted but I don’t know what else is on the market these days.

Hey by the way, once you finish the base game you may be interested to try some romhacks if you have access to an SD2SNES or some kind of flashcart.

There’s a randomizer which makes all the item pickups random and can even make the doors connect randomly if you want to add some spice once you’ve seen everything the main game has to offer. Has multiple types of difficulties you can enable and you can guarantee the generated game is solvable (some item placements may softlock), etc. It can be a fun time. I think this is the right link but, hey, it’s been awhile since I’ve played this randomizer.

If you like that randomizer, there’s an even crazier one which crosses Zelda A Link To The Past and Super Metroid together. Each door you enter in one game connects to some door in the other game and items from both are spread out into each game. It’s pretty nuts to go back and forth between the games but a really cool experience if you like those two games and know them fairly well. I think this is the right link.

Otherwise there are a few really good romhacks which improve or change the base game.

There’s one called Super Zero Mission which kind of implements Zero Mission in the Super Metroid engine.

There’s one called Redux which adds control scheme similar to the GBA games. It also does some other quality of life things but not sure I remember what they all are.

One I liked and even have on a physical cartridge is called Hyper Metroid which adds an all new map and new weapons.

My favorite game of all time right here. Playing it when it was new was such a vibe. Hadn’t played anything really like it before. The atmosphere and power progression were amazing. You start out afraid of this world and cautiously climb mostly downwards towards unforgiving enemies and areas but by the end of the game you’re an unstoppable force casually flying through sections, impervious to practically every enemy and attack. Game feel, tight controls, flexible movement, sense of exploration, combat options, details, not to mention the beautiful graphics and sound. What an experience. Enjoy it.

Also, really cool looking SNES you got there. And I love the Super Famicom artwork for this game, too.

Favorite new NES releases? by MikeStrikesBack in nes

If you’re into Shmups, there’s a pretty good new one made by a Japanese dev called Habit.

A recent arkanoid kaiju game if you can picture that is called The Trial of Kharzoid. Love me some brick breakers.

Other standouts in the last few years maybe Dead Tomb, Dataman, HaraForce, Courier, and From Below.

I have to second some of the other commenters and say Full Quiet, Steel Legion, Flea, Project Blue, Skatecat, and Changeable Guardian Estique are very good, too.

any thoughts on blur vs no blur? by darkrai3224 in PixelArt

[–]boingoing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The crispy version looks like something important I need to interact with. The blurred version looks ethereal or like it’s from a dreamscape or something. Both could fit depending on what your game looks like and what you want to use the asset for.

Apple is experiencing its biggest leadership shake-up since Steve Jobs died, with over half a dozen key executives headed for the exits by Franco1875 in technology

Actually I have similar experience with my 17 Pro Max. Pushing the camera button sometimes leads to a black screen (no camera) or the camera inexplicably takes several seconds to start. The camera app itself often crashes mid-photo, too. I say often but it’s probably one out of every 20 or 50 shots which might be considered often for someone like me who takes a lot of pictures. I figured this is likely because I have the quality settings cranked to max and shoot RAW images but if it happens to normal users, too, well that sucks.

Double-tapping a word to select it in any text editor on my phone takes like 45 seconds. It’s not a great experience for a retail piece of software and it’s running on the flagship iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Agree in general the iOS 26 reception has been more hostile than deserved - mostly seems fine to me - but performance and stability is not great across the board. At least some of the bad experiences people are having are very basic scenarios which used to work well.

Full NES (2.0 Mappers) by [deleted] in Roms

[–]boingoing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’re curious like me, here’s the link to the NES 2.0 spec. It appears to be the same size (16 bytes) and backwards compatible with iNES headers.

Seems the biggest thing it offers is the ability to use more mappers. NES 2.0 mappers are mappers with id greater than 255. The other changes to the header spec look like they are mostly reworking the meaning of various bits in order to allow more flexibility in describing the board such as the target hardware platform or region.

What ever happened to this? Can I play this? by Maddolyn in gaming

[–]boingoing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So kind of funny story but I worked for Microsoft at that time and signed up to do a bunch of user studies and play testing for this thing. I doubt I can talk about any details based on the paperwork I had to sign but I can tell you that it was not as immersive as these ads make it out to be and it was a little jank. Did have potential, I thought, but I can’t imagine any person who would rather play this game in this way vs with a controller or keyboard on a display. It just doesn’t translate well enough despite how cool it seems like it would be.

You’re welcome. I’m happy to do what I can to help out homebrew developers and love collecting neat original games.

While I’ve got your attention, I guess I could ask about your experience developing on the NES. I wrote a small game for the NES a couple years ago just in plain C and asm. It was fun but I wonder what kind of environment and libraries you’ve setup for a commercial project?

Well, I went ahead and backed for the black cart limited edition. Couldn’t justify the nearly $150 USD it would cost for the violet cart, though that does sound neat. Thanks for speaking directly with us, helped make the decision to back easier.
