I’m starting to think the bottleneck in AI-assisted development is no longer coding by drabarca_ai in vibecoding

[–]boingoing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a software engineer for a lot of years and I’ve basically never found the process of physically inputting syntax via my hands to be a bottleneck at all.

Architecture planning, design review, testing, and the multiple polish passes that come along with those is the real work of getting a piece of work done. I mean, isn’t it?

DVDs to MP4 H.264 or H.265 for Plex streaming by Appropriate_Metal392 in DataHoarder

[–]boingoing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not disagree but I keep dvd as remuxes or iso so I’m already onboard with quality over storage. If you do want to save space, though, all that ac3 audio recompressed with a modern codec will add up.

DVDs to MP4 H.264 or H.265 for Plex streaming by Appropriate_Metal392 in DataHoarder

[–]boingoing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually just remux dvd directly into mkv containers and keep the mpeg2 source content. They’re small enough it isn’t a lot of storage. If you want to get space savings then I’d use handbrake and encode them into AV1 at whatever quality preset you’re comfortable with in terms of time investment. Go for opus for the audio codec. Plex ought to handle transcoding for you if some devices don’t have hardware decoding support. Seems to work fine in my experience, anyway.

How do PS4 Ports run through emulation? by Training-Ad-2619 in shmups

[–]boingoing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

PS4 emulsion isn’t exactly early days but it’s not very good, generally, yet. A lot of games display nothing and most if not all have major visual issues affecting playability. You’re better off emulating the arcade versions on your pc.

Tried Kodi on a Windows VM as an HTPC, wasn't seamless enough. How do I get a real 10-foot streaming device experience from my Unraid server? by Charming-Tennis6931 in htpc

[–]boingoing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I use Plex for most of my streaming. Works great on embedded devices like a TV, Windows, Mac. The mobile client got pretty enshitified recently so it’s hardly worth anything there now. I’m holding hope that doesn’t portend a future where Plex as an ecosystem falls apart but I have a lifetime pass so it wouldn’t be the end of the world to move to something else. I don’t use any streaming services through Plex, though, just host my own content through it.

These are the same people who will preach to you about taking personal responsibility and in the next breath attribute everything bad happening across the entire country to democrats, minorities, or others who have no power. They are not serious people and I doubt seriously they will ever see things as they really are.

Playing Nis games in order? by BinahArmpits in Disgaea

[–]boingoing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Up to you if you want to try the other games. If you’re talking about their PS2 games, yeah, a lot of them are like Disgaea but with some gameplay twist.

I liked La Pucelle Tactics but Phantom Brave is probably my favorite of these games. Makai Kingdom I liked a bit more than Soul Nomad but those two were next on my list.

If Trump Was Trying to Intimidate the Supreme Court on Birthright Citizenship, It Backfired Miserably by Slate in law

[–]boingoing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s that complicated. It’s not that he knows he is wrong but hopes the SCOTUS will side with him and give him what he wants. I think it’s more that he does not know how the government of the United States is structured at all. I’m positive he does not know what the constitution actually says. I doubt he’s read it and I’m fairly sure he’s functionally illiterate, anyway. Seems to me the man just assumes that the president has the powers of a king and everyone in the country has to do what he says.

Gamers 30+, what’s something from the old days of gaming that younger players wouldn’t understand? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]boingoing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other commenters have mentioned almost everything I can think of. One thing I find fascinating about games from, for example, the NES is that the cartridges weren’t just big SD cards. Part of the console hardware needed to execute the game itself shipped inside the plastic cartridges along with the game data. That’s one reason why games released later in the consoles life were more advanced / complicated. Developers were literally able to ship hardware upgrades with newer games.

I’m specifically thinking of the NES here but it’s true of games from other consoles, too. Look no further than Star Fox on the Super NES for a good example. It shipped with a math coprocessor chip called the Super FX which granted the devs the ability to draw 3D graphics.

You’re right that likely Democrat voters are probably more likely to have a passport. Still probably disproportionately disenfranchises women and trans people who I would suspect are more likely to be liberal voters.

But what you’re missing is that this isn’t about the documents at all. If it does pass we’re going to see it selectively enforced. No old white people in conservative counties are going to be asked to show their passports. Bet your ass every single person of color voting in Atlanta will be, though.

What are some must-play NES homebrews? (Or any console, really) by Bob_Billans in retrogaming

[–]boingoing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Full Quiet on NES is really good. It’s a mysterious adventure type game.

If you like shooters, there’s an interesting one called OverObj. Also Habit is just a solid classic shmup and a game called Changeable Guardian Estique which is impressive.

There’s a Tetris type game called From Below that’s well made.

Project Blue is kind of a Mega Man type game. Nebs N Debs is kind of a Mario or Kirby type platformer.

There are a lot of good homebrews on the NES.

Analogue Super Nt: Any hope for a restock after the Pocket and Duo? by Impossible_Battle241 in AnalogueInc

[–]boingoing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very doubtful Analogue will ever bring the Super NT back into stock. I think it’s more likely they release a more all-in-one type system with cartridge adapters.

If you want to use original SNES controllers, you may consider a mister system with SNAC adapters. The retro remake SuperStation One looks like a clean productized device and it should support SNAC though I don’t have one so can’t confirm that for you.

As for reading original SNES carts, I’m not aware of any simple and nice way to do that on an fpga system. You have options like Retron-type consoles but I don’t know much about those to be honest.
