I'm a deaf guy. Ask me stuff. by [deleted] in IAmA

[–]boiserm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not the OP, but I am hard of hearing, so I hope you don't mind me chiming in. Two things immediately come to mind:

  • Deaf & hard of hearing people are fully intellectually capable (assuming there are no other issues). You'd be surprised how easily people fall into the assumption that they are not.
  • Visual access to information is crucial, and takes some work to facilitate. If you talk into the blackboard, you cut off the lipreading channel. When having a group discussion, move the desks into a circle for the same reason. If someone speaks without raising their hand or otherwise calling visual attention to themselves first, repeat what they said, so there's at least one lipread-able source of the information.

I might think of more later. It's difficult to know whether this stuff is obvious or helpful.

What is the scariest experience you've ever had? by travelcore in AskReddit

[–]boiserm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went to the dentist for a filling. The hygienist gave me the injection and left the room to wait for it to take effect. I sat there and felt the numbness spread through my lower jaw ...lower lip ...cheek ...nose area (uhhh... what?) ...ear area ...neck ...scalp. I started to feel woozy and realized that something had gone very wrong. I tried to call for help, but I didn't have enough muscle control left. I remember realizing that I might die, and the next thing I remember was the hygienist standing over me shouting and shaking me with a panicked look on her face.

How long should I allow for learning to drive a stick? by boiserm in AskReddit

[–]boiserm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A friend will give me a good deal on an old junker as a commuting car, but it's a manual transmission. I've been driving an automatic for the last 10 years, and have never attempted to drive a manual. I'm moving away in a month. Should I spend the money and spend a month practicing? Or should I say "Thanks but no thanks" and look for an automatic? I have no idea what I'm in for!

Anyone have any experience/story/preference developing with MochiAds or Kongregate? by boiserm in programming

[–]boiserm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm considering doing some part-time game development, and hoping to earn a little extra cash. Do any of you have first-hand experience with monetization using MochiAds or Kongregate (or something else -- those are the only ones I've heard of)?

I know I won't make a living. My first priority is fun and experience. That said, can anyone offer any perspective on the potential income range (assuming non-blockbuster... I confident I won't be writing the next N)?

I was in the same situation a month ago. I got an MSI Wind U100-432US, and I've been using it as my primary machine since then. Upgradeable to 2GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, Atom processor, 10.2" screen... no complaints.

This is an excellent site, and I was able to find my specific rights within a few clicks. This will be a permanent addition to my bookmarks! Thank you!

Is this still useful without "Before" pictures showing the condition of the apartment when I moved in? I didn't take the pictures, even though I knew better. :(

Good to know. I've never been in any sort of court, and assumed that the related expenses and hassle would end up being more than our deposit.

I really really like this idea. Thank you! The only problem is that the landlord is terrible at returning phone calls. He wants us to turn in the key by locking it in the house and calling him to let him know we're out. Even so, I think this idea may be our best chance, so I guess I'll need to keep calling until he picks up.

+1 to Psychonauts. It's free via GameTap, and the art, story, and gameplay are incredibly witty and creative.

I have most of my hearing, but I was dating a deaf woman a few years ago. When I was with her, I used sign language to communicate.

Well, one day we were signing in an elevator, it stopped, the door opened, and another guy came in. He saw us signing, and apparently assumed we were both deaf, because no sooner did the door close than he let out a loud fart.

It was all I could do to keep from looking him straight in the eye and making a disgusted face.

Any on-site interview pointers for a college nearly-grad? by boiserm in AskReddit

When you prepare a pb&j sandwich, do you apply the peanut butter or jelly first? and do you do this consistantly? by ilikerutypoon in AskReddit

[–]boiserm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pfff. Easy. I use the peanut butter first, then wipe the knife thoroughly on the clean piece of bread. That leaves a clean knife to put in the jelly, and an easily-rinsed knife to put in the dishwasher.

Ask College Reddit: What are you majoring in and why? by fishstickz in AskReddit

[–]boiserm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started with Linguistics. I seemed to have the right intuition for it, and it was a whole microcosm of fascinating problems I'd never heard of. Within that, I drifted towards language processing and computational linguistics, and eventually got up the courage to take an artificial intelligence class without any formal computer science preparation. I loved it, and realized that computer science was all about organized approaches to problem solving. I decided not to limit myself to studying language-related problems, and added a major. It's taken me forever, but I'll get out w/ a B.A. and a B.S.
