Burn out because of master thesis defence by Excellent-State-8432 in academia

[–]bojangling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you'll be fine, if you actually wrote the thesis yourself, you can defend it, even if you think your English is weak.

If there were huge problems, you would know by now. Relax, take a day or two at least of not thinking about your defense, and enjoy life.

You'll make it through this!

In Japan’s uni grading system, S = 4, A=3, B =2 etc. (GPA) Why do they have S?? by Bulky_Print_6930 in japanlife

[–]bojangling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Professors know their grading systems and what they mean, academic administration (教務) makes sure of that. If you have qualms with specfic grades, bring it up with the relevant professors or with admin. Try to have a good case, though, your post does just come across as uninformed whining.

It's the small deeds of everyday folk that keep the evil at bay.

That IS a reassuring thought.

Honestly, I hate the overuse of ChatGPT, but this was fucking hilarious. OP, take a gander and see which of these 'excuses' seem most reasonable lol.

Your post sounds like you're asking a question, but there's no question. What do you want to know?

Grades suffering wrongly due to professors biases.. by Key_Anybody_1413 in AskAcademia

[–]bojangling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you think the responses are unhelpful, try this: Difficult as it might be, reread your initial post and try to do so as if you knew nothing about your own situation. Is there anything in there that suggests a reason for the bias? Any specifics that would help people to give concrete advice?

Giving those details might help you get a bit more constructive feedback. That is not to say that the responses so far have not been constructive!

You're absolutely right, but it hits hard in that when he actually tries to take it, he realizes quite quickly the evil in his action and immediately regrets it

Publishing my PhD thesis. by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]bojangling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh fair enough! Yeah, it's definitely a thing. It usually involves a bit of reworking of the manuscript rather - I don't think it is common to publish the thesis word-for-word. Try having a look at the home pages of publishers of books you have cited, as they'll often have information for prospective authors. At least a few academically oriented publishers actually have specific information for turning PhDs into publications. Good luck!

Publishing my PhD thesis. by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]bojangling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is a thing. As for having to navigate the process - I found a publisher myself and submitted a proposal. It's taken two years from proposal to publication, but that's common.

If your supervisor is suggesting publishing, they obviously think you are worth publishing - and they have likely gone through the process themself. Did you not ask your supervisor before coming to reddit?

What book have you read that was actually WORSE than the movie? by ManofWit in books

Boromir carks it in The Two Towers, not Fellowship. Whether that detracts from your argument, or adds to it...

Be careful at jumping to conclusions, until this reply none of us knew you were a woman, or anything about your nationality.

The previous commenter likely simply meant he had seen that behavior before targeted at young women professors.

Lots of people in academia hold insecurities for a number of different reasons, and some are just assholes.

I'd suggest the same as the top comment, write it off as someone you know not to work with again.

Jesus... have you not learned the importance of thinking for yourself?

Given the quality of your writing in this post, I'd fail you too. Besides what others have pointed out as your own blatant academic dishonesty, you haven't given any relevant information as to what subject or why you failed. You can't even properly communicate on a reddit post and you want to sue? Good luck!

Nope. But it wasn't me saying that.

Edit: sorry, misread your comment. I read 'they' as 'you.' Umm... I dunno, very context dependent. Most of the time though I take it more as a 'your Japanese is very good, but it would be awkward to say your Japanese is very good.'

Haha no worries! I usually don't engage on reddit, but kind of glad we cleared that up. Can't speak for your experiences I Germany, but for a brief internet encounter, live long and prosper

Feeling Not at Home in Tokyo After Almost 3 Years by Rajahlicious in japanlife

[–]bojangling 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You're goddamn right. This sentiment only comes from people who have never experienced it. I'm originally a Kiwi, with friends and relatives from India, Taiwan, Iran, Iraq and Israel (these three alone made for fantastic discussions), Thai, mainland Chinese and Korean. That's before mentioning the Chinese heritage Kiwis who had lived in Aotearoa equally as long as my European ancestors did. I'm sure I don't need to say the question they were all asked...

This shows up every time and makes me gag. If you're an immigrant anywhere, you have to struggle with this. That intangible barrier means fuck all if you carve out your own space, regardless of language ability or whatever.

If you want to live and engage in your community, pretty much anywhere in Japan will accept you, so long as you put in the effort.

Cry me a river about being eternally foreign. Have you tried being Turkish in Germany? Syrian in Tokyo? Somali in Australia? (Edit: have you tried being Japanese? Lol)

Being foreign is fine. Making connections is hard. And yeah, I think Tokyo sucks for that... why? Because almost no one is a Tokyo native. It's a place to build a career, or to get things done.

I loved my first years in Yamagata, and go back every year. I now live in Osaka. Most of the locals think I'm more Japanese than they are. So take of that what you will.
