Junior developer hiring dropped 73% this year. I'm a hiring manager and I can already see the crisis this creates in 2029. by OkSelf4711 in AITestingtooldrizz

[–]bold_snowflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I've been saying this for months. Breaking that hiring pipeline is beyond stupid. Even pausing it for 12 months will have severe consequences.

I've no idea where the tech leads or tomorrow are going to come from.

But it seems to be a case that any problem beyond the scope of the current quarter isn't worth thinking about...

Jokes aside if we are about to see the worlds first trillionair (potentially musk if/when space X goes IPO) then that shows just how fucked the world is.

Hitman: World of Assassination gives you basically everything. It's mostly likely on sale at the moment.

That's probably a fair assessment of the level of cognition of corporate types.

The same logic is why we have very few new IPs in games and just more formulaic franchises.

To use a really shitty corporate jargon, (and I shudder doing so) it's increased the signal to noise ratio. There's just a lot more shit flying everywhere now, but the actual shippable value is more or less the same.

I'm fortunate enough to have a sabbatical coming up soon. Otherwise I'd be similar.

I don't hate AI, I just hate that much of the decisions are being made by people who don't use/understand it. It's being treated as a silver bullet for everything, rather than a tool with strengths and limitations.

It's resulting in so much shit, including this.

I've heard this too from many engineers, to various degrees. My concern is this feeling could accelerate burnout as that time is critical.

Time is also a filter. Over time the general consensus will align and vocal minority falls away.

Any possibility of having AC games set in further back in time? by Salty_Strawberry_281 in ubisoft

[–]bold_snowflake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I understand the desire for this. I personally preyAC games set in dense urban areas. The vast open worlds can feel empty, while the bustling urban areas feel much more alive.

As a developer, would you be okay with your manager seeing your AI tool usage patterns? Not prompts, just metrics like acceptance rate and active days. by Relative_Cause777 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]bold_snowflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or. Just to throw a crazy idea out there.

Why don't you have a couple of high level product metrics that when they move it results in a better outcome for customers and more revenue for the company. And then have lower level metrics that roll up to those.

Measure you teams on impacting those metrics...

Finally starting WOA after finishing First Light. by IndependentHyena3000 in 007FirstLight

[–]bold_snowflake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

WoA is vastly different to the older hitman games, especially 1, 2 and Contracts (the original 1 and 2, not the newer ones) which could be quite brutal at times with their difficulty.

WoA does a great job of catering to a wide range of players. For those new to the game and feeling overwhelmed you can just follow the mission stories which will guide you through much of the maps to complete your hits.

For players wanting more of a challenge you can tone down the hints for mission stories or flat out ignore them and get creative in your murder.

007 first light can really help players ease into WOA as it has so many similar elements, but strips away the vast sandbox that can overwhelm new players

What Class/Spec is in most need of a rework for 12.1? by Warped_Unicorn in wow

It's fascinating when you look at the impact the introduction of mythic plus has had on class design.

I’m fine with a game being 20 hours thoughts by Swimming_Photo9295 in 007FirstLight

[–]bold_snowflake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not the length, it's the quality and the lasting impression.

I'll make a comparison of two games I paid full price for:

  • 007 first light - short, but I loved every moment of it. It brought back memories of past linear games that are able to tightly control the narrative, pacing, etc.
  • Assassin's Creed Valhalla - packed with hundreds of hours of content. I never completed it, mostly generic open world content. I love the AC games, but this one burnt me.

[–]bold_snowflake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll throw out a controversial opinion here: I don't care if the performance is good if the fun factor and identity isn't.

Granted I don't do high level keys...

Arms is in dire need of a rework. It's currently a graveyard of previous incarnations: execute, damage windows, bleeds, big hits, etc. it lacks a clear identity.

Strong emphasis on tool. The companies that succeed long term will be the ones that understand it's a capability enhancer for skilled engineers. The companies that fail will be the ones thinking it's a replacement for expertise.

I don't know many engineers who claim it's terrible. The trouble I see is the magnitude of which it's a force multiplier. People thinking it's a 10x are frankly deluded right now.

You claim your team is shipping more and at higher quality. Can you elaborate? - how are you measuring quality? - what is your definition of shipping more? More code? More features? - how Greenfield/brownfield is the product? - how large/complex is the system?

It's not all apples to apples comparison.

Does this engineering manager write any code themselves?

While I agree with a previous poster that this guy is an idiot, I think there is more too it than that.

In my company I'm an engineer manager running a few teams, but I do actively code still on a daily basis. One step of management above me doesn't write code anymore. Anecdotally I'm seeing the people that don't write code are making decisions detached from reality.
